Laser desorption Fourier transform mass spectra of malto-oligosaccharides.

Laser desorption mass spectra of malto-oligomers, including starch, have been obtained using Fourier transform mass spectrometry. Fragmentations of these oligomers have been examined after doping with metal salts to obtain cation-attachment ions. Doping starch with NaCl, KBr and Ag2O results in analogous cation-attachment oligosaccharide fragment ions for all three metal ions.

Translational control during early Dictyostelium development: possible involvement of poly(A) sequences.

A rapid decrease in the translational efficiency of mRNA synthesized during vegetative growth is associated with the initiation of development in Dictyostelium discoideum. In contrast, newly synthesized mRNA associates with polysomes with high efficiency. Discrimination between these two mRNA populations correlates with a rapid shortening of the poly(A) tract on the preexisting mRNA.

Treatment of psoroptic mange with avermectins.

Good control of Psoroptes cuniculi was achieved in rabbits treated with various avermectin analogues by topical application or by subcutaneous injection of the 22,23-dihydroavermectin B1.

A characterization of mitochondrial and mycoplasmal DNAs associated with cloned HeLa thymidine kinase minus cells.

HeLa S3 cells were cloned, recloned, and then selected for growth in the presence of increasing concentrations of bromodeoxyuridine. Cultures of these cloned thymidine kinase minus (TK-) cells were found to harbor mycoplasma which sedimented with mitochondria in sucrose density step gradients. Examination of mitochondrial DNA (mitDNA) components by restriction enzyme analysis and electron microscopy revealed no gross alterations in size, sequence arrangements, or replicative forms compared with mitDNA of HeLa S3 cells.

The divided dosage/low dosage concept using fenbendazole.

Fenbendazole was administered as an anthelmintic to cattle and sheep by incorporation into feed blocks. The therapeutic dose of 5 mg/kg live mass for sheep and 10 mg/kg for cattle was administered in divided dosages over periods of 4 d and in some cases 5 d. The periods were limited to obviate possible development of resistance.

Cranial nerve injury from halo traction.

Six of the 70 patients treated with skeletal traction at the Alfred I. duPont Institute exhibited cranial nerve complications. The sixth cranial nerve was most commonly affected by distraction and resulted in weakness in lateral gaze.

Microheterogeneity detected in circular dimer mitochondrial DNA.

Exhaustive EcoRI digests of circular dimer mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from mouse cell lines LD and LDTK- yield two major fragments whose average lengths are slightly smaller than the corresponding fragments of circular monomer mtDNA from mouse LA9 and LMTK- cells. A third fragment approximately 400 nucleotide pairs in length is frequently produced in less than molar yield. Exhaustive EcoRI digests of circular dimer mtDNA from human acute myelogenous leukemic leucocytes yield three major fragments.
