Objectives: Early amnion rupture (EAR, EARS, EAROD) may be the cause of amniotic bands and sheets development, which may lead to different fetal defects--from minor finger amputation, chiloschisis or palatoschisis to major amputation, acranius, deep paroschisis or broad body covering cleavage.

Design: The aim of this report was to analyse cases of fetal malformation, which might have been caused by EARS.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective analysis of 3173 autopsies performed within a span of 14 years (1989-2003).

Design: Although an association between subclinical intrauterine infection and preterm birth is well established, there is conflicting evidence regarding the benefits of antibiotic administration in women in preterm labor.

Objectives: We attempted to determine the effect of antibioticotherapy in mothers on congenital neonatal infection.

Materials And Methods: The study group consisted of 1049 pregnant women with imminent preterm labor hospitalized in Clinics of The Research Institute Polish Mother's Memorial Hospital.

For years conception of Th2 overbalance during pregnancy has been a paradigm for immunology of reproduction, while Th1 activity has been presented as unwanted component. Studies concerning Th1/Th2 balance in physiological and complicated pregnancy have been reviewed. Th1 activity during early peri-implantation period, premature and term labour not only accompanies but even predominates over Th2 activity.

Aim: To report the periprocedural and long-term results of using the Amplatzer septal occluder for primary closure of post myocardial infarction ventricular septal defects.

Methods And Results: Transcatheter closure was considered in patients with significant left-to-right shunting and defect anatomy and location thought to be suitable for closure with such a device. From December 1999 until February 2005 eleven patients (9 males) aged 52-81 years (mean 67,9) underwent an attempted closure.

The authors described 6 cases of serious complication of the multiple pregnancies with twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) sub form twin reverse arterial perfusion (TRAP) with development of acardiac fetus. It was established that this anomaly is an extremely rare complication of multiple pregnancies and very uncommon congenital malformation disclosed in fetuses and newborns. Acardiac "recipient" fetuses may have different morphological forms and often their birth weight is higher than that of the "donor" fetuses.

Objective: We describe a case of severe fetal hydrocephalus due to toxoplasmosis which could not be diagnosed until late gestational age due to the lack of a serologic surveillance program during pregnancy; moreover, this case points to the usefulness of molecular biology tools in the diagnostic process. Abnormal ultrasound in the 2nd trimester was noticed and Toxoplasma gondii was demonstrated in amniotic fluid at the 28th week of gestation both by PCR and by mice inoculation. Fansidar and folinic acid were administered.

Objectives: Magnesium sulfate has been recognized as a neuroprotective agent against hypoxia-ischemia, mainly by the protection from the excitotoxicity associated with increased glutamate concentration. However, the mechanism of MgSO4 action is not fully understood and is considerably controversial.

Design And Methods: During the 2 first hours of life, the asphyxiated full-term newborns were treated intravenously with one dose of MgSO4 250 mg/kg body weight.

Contemporary opinions concerning the function of decidual NK cells, T and B lymphocytes as well as macrophages and neutrophils in normal pregnancy were presented in the paper. Maintenance of proper Th1/Th2 balance concerning cytokines produced by trophoblast, decidua and decidual infiltrating immunological cells was also precisely described.

Some information regarding some characteristics of new identified virus, causing human respiratory diseases (named human metapneumovirus--hMPV) has been written. Moreover, areas of existing, frequency of infections, the possibility of diagnosis have been included. This virus has been isolated and identified by Dutch researcher, van den Hoogen, for the first time in 2001.

Ability to respond to environmental changes and secretion of hydrolases are considered to be important for Candida virulence. In this study we determined and compared the activities of 19 different hydrolases of the fungal strains isolated from diabetic and non-diabetic pregnant women. We also looked for the presence of a relationship between hydrolase activities and glycemic control, and, furthermore, evaluated the influence of gestational age on the activity of hydrolases.

Background: Paradoxical embolism due to the presence of patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a well-established possible mechanism of ischaemic stroke of unknown origin. Mechanical sealing of the interatrial septum seems to be the most effective method for the prevention of stroke recurrences.

Aim: To assess prospectively the short- and mid-term results of transcatheter closure of PFO in consecutive patients with a history of cryptogenic ischaemic stroke.

We present the review of the literature and the proposals of the exact diagnosing and therapy of the ovarian tumors complicating pregnancy. The incidence of ovarian tumors in pregnant women is estimated on 1/1000 deliveries. The coexistence of an ovarian tumor with pregnancy presents problems to both the clinician (obstetrician, oncologist) and the patient.

Objectives: (1) To find the distribution of species among fungal strains isolated from pregnant women with diabetes mellitus (DM), gestational diabetes (GDM) and healthy controls (CON); (2) to analyse the influence of glycemia on the prevalence of fungi in different body sites.

Methods: Mycological examinations were performed in 251 pregnant women: 119 diabetic (47 DM, and 72 GDM) and 132 controls. Samples were collected from vagina, rectum and oral cavity of all women and cultured on Sabouraud media.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is an established risk factor for the development of overt diabetes. Since the change in diagnostic criteria for diabetes in 1997, it is unclear whether there should be any preference for fasting or post-glucose challenge blood glucose in diagnosing diabetes after GDM. The study aimed at assessing the usefulness of both diagnostic methods in women after GDM.

Objectives: To estimate the prevalence of fungi in the vagina, rectum and oral cavity in pregnant women with diabetes mellitus (DM) type I or gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and in healthy controls; to assess the influence of gestational age on the prevalence of fungi; to compare the vaginal symptoms within the groups; and to analyze the multifocality of fungal invasions.

Methods: A total of 251 women were examined: 47 with DM, 72 with GDM and 132 controls. Samples were collected from the vagina, rectum and oral cavity of all women and cultured on Sabouraud media.

The aim of the study was to assess the frequency of the occurrence of parainfluenza type 3 virus infection in neonates with cardiac arrhythmia. In 12 (17%) out of 70 of neonates parainfluenza type 3 virus infection was recognized basing on serologic hemagglutinin inhibition test. Ten of them were diagnosed with mild course of myocarditis.
