Introduction: There is lack of consensus regarding whether a second screening in rhesus-positive pregnant women is worthwhile, with different guidelines, recommendations, and practices. We aimed to estimate the number and timing of missed alloimmunizations in rhesus-positive pregnancies screened once and weigh the relative burden of additional screening and monitoring versus the estimated reduction in adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Methods: We extracted information on maternal, pregnancy, and screening results for 682,126 pregnancies for 2003-2012 from Swedish national registers.

Background And Purpose: Parenting concerns can be a major source of distress for patients with cancer who are parents of dependent children; however, these are often not addressed in health care. The Parenting Concerns Questionnaire (PCQ) is an instrument designed to assess parents' worries about the impact of cancer on their children and their ability to parent during this time. The Swedish version of the PCQ has, however, not been evaluated.

Perinatal affective disorders are common, but standard screening measures reliant on subjective self-reports might not be sufficient to identify pregnant women at-risk for developing postpartum depression and anxiety. Lower heart rate variability (HRV) has been shown to be associated with affective disorders. The current exploratory study aimed to evaluate the predictive utility of late pregnancy HRV measurements of postpartum affective symptoms.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examines major traumatic hemorrhage in trauma patients, identifying risk factors and associated outcomes for those at high risk of major bleeding.
  • A total of 7,020 trauma patients were analyzed, with 145 classified as having major bleeding based on transfusion needs; the majority were young men who experienced blunt trauma.
  • Key predictors of major bleeding included low blood pressure in prehospital and emergency settings, as well as abnormal blood gas and coagulation measures, highlighting the need for rapid diagnostics in trauma scenarios.

Background: Many patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) need repeated red blood cell transfusions which entails a risk of immunization and antibody formation. Associations between alloantibodies, autoantibodies and increased transfusion requirements have been reported, but their relationship remains unclear. In this study, we analyzed factors potentially associated with red blood cell alloimmunization, as well as changes in transfusion intensity and post-transfusion hemoglobin increments.

Background: Parents given a diagnosis of cancer must balance the demands of their illness and caregiving responsibilities. This can result in parental stress and have a negative impact on the well-being of the whole family. A greater understanding of the experiences of parents with cancer is necessary to provide adequate support.

Background: In clinical settings and research studies, childbirth experience is often measured using a single-item question about overall experience. Little is known about what women include in this rating, which complicates the design of adequate follow-up, as well as the interpretation of research findings based on ratings of overall childbirth experience. The aim of this study was to examine which known dimensions of childbirth experience women include in the rating on a single-item measure.

Background: Balanced transfusions, including platelets, are critical for bleeding patients to maintain hemostasis. Many rural hospitals have no or limited platelet inventory, with several hours of transport time from larger hospitals. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using cryopreserved platelets that can be stored for years, in remote hospitals with no or limited platelet inventory.

Purpose: To investigate the short- and long-term risk of psychotropic medication use in parents who lose a child to cancer diagnosed in adolescence.

Methods: This is a Swedish nationwide register-based study including 184 bereaved mothers and 184 bereaved fathers of 184 children diagnosed with cancer in adolescence. Logistic regression analyses, adjusted for sociodemographic characteristics and history of mental health problems, were performed to estimate risk of a prescription of psychotropic medication (anxiolytics, hypnotics/sedatives, antidepressants) in cancer-bereaved parents from 1 year before to 5 years after the child's death, with a general population sample of non-bereaved parents (n = 3291) as referents.
