Background: Kidney transplantation (KTx) is the treatment of choice for children with end-stage renal disease (ESRD).
Objective: An update of 48 years of surgical experience with pediatric KTx (PKTx) is presented, and the results between recipients of organs from deceased donors (DDs) and living donors (LDs) are compared.
Study Design: All patients younger than 18 years who underwent KTx between 1967 and 2015 were evaluated.
We have conceived, built, and operated a cryogenic Penning trap with an electrically conducting yet optically transparent solid electrode. The trap, dedicated to spectroscopy and imaging of confined particles under large solid angles, is of "half-open" design with one open endcap and one closed endcap that mainly consists of a glass window coated with a highly transparent conductive layer. This arrangement allows for the trapping of externally or internally produced particles and yields flexible access for optical excitation and efficient light collection from the trapping region.

We report the results of our single center study of 250 first transplant recipients with polycystic kidney disease (autosomal dominant [64%], medullary cystic [16%], autosomal recessive [6%], and nonspecified [14%]).

Direct type I interferon (IFN) signaling on T cells is necessary for the proper expansion, differentiation, and survival of responding T cells following infection with viruses prominently inducing type I IFN. The reasons for the abortive response of T cells lacking the type I IFN receptor (Ifnar1(-/-)) remain unclear. Here, we studied in vivo the role of type-I IFN in this fate decision. We found that under priming conditions dominated by type-I IFN, as observed in lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) infection, type-I IFN signaling directly impacted the regulation of T-bet and thus the early fate decision of CD8(+) T cells.

The population of memory cells is heterogeneous with respect to their phenotype, their anatomical localization and their functional capacities in order to afford optimal protection against secondary infections. In the past years, it has become clear that multiple in vivo parameters are involved in shaping the composition of the memory CD8 T cell population, including antigen load, duration and strength of CD8 T cell stimulation, the level of inflammation, availability of CD4 T cell help and CD8 T cell precursor frequencies.
