Background: Knowledge gaps exist about the usefulness and extent of blood tests and nerve conduction studies in the workup of polyneuropathy. We hypothesize that a limited workup improves costs spent on diagnostics without loss of diagnostic reliability or disadvantageous effect on treatment choice in many patients with a clinical diagnosis of chronic polyneuropathy. Background: Intrauterine inflammation is considered a major cause of brain injury in preterm infants, leading to long-term neurodevelopmental deficits. A potential contributor to this brain injury is dysregulation of neurovascular coupling. We have shown that intrauterine inflammation induced by intra-amniotic lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in preterm lambs, and postnatal dopamine administration, disrupts neurovascular coupling and the functional cerebral haemodynamic responses, potentially leading to impaired brain development.

The objective of this scoping review was to systematically review the literature on how non-financial conflicts of interest (nfCOI) are defined and evaluated, and the strategies suggested for their management in health-related and biomedical journals. PubMed, Embase, Scopus and Web of Science were searched for peer reviewed studies published in English between 1970 and December 2023 that addressed at least one of the following: the definition, evaluation, or management of non-financial conflicts of interest. From 658 studies, 190 studies were included in the review.

The use of a non-invasive fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH)-based method on saliva for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 is evaluated in a proof-of-concept study and thereafter utilized in an outpatient setting with the Biotrack-MED® analyzer. For a proof-of-concept study, saliva samples were obtained from 28 persons with mild or moderate COVID-19-related symptoms who were tested RT-PCR positive or negative for SARS-CoV-2. In an outpatient setting, 972 individual saliva samples were utilized.

A validation study of a 28-item Child and Youth Resilience Measure (CYRM-28) among a Dutch sample was presented. A sample of 525 adolescents (16-20 years old) from the CYRM-28 in the Netherlands was analyzed. Saliva is a matrix which may act as a vector for pathogen transmission and may serve as a possible proxy for SARS-CoV-2 contagiousness. Tetracycline antibiotics act by inhibiting bacterial protein translation. Given the bacterial ancestry of mitochondria, we tested the hypothesis that doxycycline-which belongs to the tetracycline class-reduces mitochondrial function, and results in cardiac contractile dysfunction in cultured H9C2 cardiomyoblasts, adult rat cardiomyocytes, in and in mice. Ampicillin and carbenicillin were used as control antibiotics since these do not interfere with mitochondrial translation.

Background: In the adult brain, increases in neural activity lead to increases in local blood flow. However, in the preterm neonate, studies of cerebral functional haemodynamics have yielded inconsistent results, including negative responses suggesting decreased perfusion and localised tissue hypoxia, probably due to immature neurovascular coupling. Furthermore, the impact of vasoactive medications, such as dopamine and dobutamine used as inotropic therapies in preterm neonates, on cerebrovascular responses to somatosensory input is unknown.

Background: Recent research findings have revealed a key role of oxidative DNA damage in the pathogenesis of atrial fibrillation (AF). Therefore, the circulating oxidative DNA damage marker 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) may represent a biomarker for staging AF and identifying patients at risk for AF recurrence and postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) after treatment.

On 10 October 2018, Australian Health Minister Greg Hunt issued a national apology to the Australian women who experienced 'horrific outcomes' following surgery using transvaginal mesh-acknowledging the 'historic agony and pain that has come from mesh implantation'. This apology followed many decades of 'innovative' use of transvaginal mesh for the treatment of pelvic organ prolapse. We use the case of transvaginal mesh to explore how clinical innovation may not only harm patients, but also entrench vulnerability and exacerbate existing inequities-in this case, those relating to gender.
