Article Synopsis
  • Non-directed organ donation in the U.S. has seen a massive 90-fold increase from 1999 to 2019, but there’s limited research on why people choose to donate without a specific recipient in mind.
  • A survey at CUIMC from 2009 to 2021 revealed that most kidney NDDs were motivated by previous altruistic actions, with a significant portion influenced by their religious beliefs and personal connections to organ donation stories.
  • The study concluded with six recommended actions to enhance non-directed donations, including targeted outreach to altruistic individuals, promoting transplant stories, and addressing financial barriers related to donation.

Background: Myocardial scars harbor areas of slow conduction and display abnormal electrograms. Pace-mapping at these sites can generate a 12-lead ECG morphological match to a targeted ventricular tachycardia (VT), and in some instances, multiple exit morphologies can result. At times, this can also result in the initiation of VT, termed pace-mapped induction (PMI).

Aims: Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is associated with reverse left ventricular (LV) remodelling. However, the effects of CRT-induced mechanical remodelling on electrical remodelling, and the occurrence of ventricular arrhythmias have not been clearly established. We studied the relationship between mechanical remodelling, electrical remodelling, and the occurrence of appropriate implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapy 1 year after CRT.

Background: The utility of defibrillation threshold testing in patients undergoing implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) implantation is controversial. Higher defibrillation thresholds have been noted in patients undergoing implantation of cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillators (CRT-D). Since the risks and potential benefits of testing may be higher in this population, we sought to assess the impact of defibrillation safety margin or vulnerability safety margin testing in CRT-D recipients.

Unlabelled: Ultra High-Density Multipolar Mapping With Double Ventricular Access.

Background: Analogous to the use of circular loop catheters to guide ablation around the pulmonary veins, it may be advantageous to use a multipolar catheter in the ventricle for rapid mapping and to guide ablation. We describe a technique using double access into the left ventricle for multipolar electroanatomic mapping and ablation of scar-mediated ventricular tachycardia (VT).

Background: Altruistic unbalanced paired kidney exchanges (AUPKE) use compatible live donor/recipient pairs to facilitate transplants for individuals with incompatible live donors. We report a three donor/recipient pair complex AUPKE. Little is known of the circumstances under which individuals are likely to trade away a compatible live donor or the overall impact that AUPKE could have on the organ supply.
