Use of Sensitivity Analyses to Assess Uncontrolled Confounding from Unmeasured Variables in Observational, Active Comparator Pharmacoepidemiologic Studies: A Systematic Review.

Understanding the potential for, direction, and magnitude of uncontrolled confounding is critical for generating informative real-world evidence. Many sensitivity analyses are available to assess robustness of study results to residual confounding, but it is unclear how researchers are using these methods. We conducted a systematic review of published active comparator cohort studies of drugs or biologics to summarize use of sensitivity analyses aimed at assessing uncontrolled confounding from an unmeasured variable.

Tumour-infiltrated cortex participates in large-scale cognitive circuits.

The extent to which tumour-infiltrated brain tissue contributes to cognitive function remains unclear. We tested the hypothesis that cortical tissue infiltrated by diffuse gliomas participates in large-scale cognitive circuits using a unique combination of intracranial electrocorticography (ECoG) and resting-state functional magnetic resonance (fMRI) imaging in four patients. We also assessed the relationship between functional connectivity with tumour-infiltrated tissue and long-term cognitive outcomes in a larger, overlapping cohort of 17 patients.

Effectiveness of Remdesivir Treatment Protocols Among Patients Hospitalized with COVID-19: A Target Trial Emulation.

Background: Remdesivir is recommended for certain hospitalized patients with COVID-19. However, these recommendations are based on evidence from small randomized trials, early observational studies, or expert opinion. Further investigation is needed to better inform treatment guidelines with regard to the effectiveness of remdesivir among these patients.

Medicaid Coverage Disruptions Among Children Enrolled in North Carolina Medicaid From 2016 to 2018.

Importance: Brief disruptions in insurance coverage among eligible participants are associated with poorer health outcomes for children.

Objective: To describe factors associated with coverage disruptions among children enrolled in North Carolina Medicaid from 2016 to 2018 and estimate the outcome of preventing such disruptions on medical expenditures.

Design Setting And Participants: This was a retrospective cohort study using North Carolina Medicaid claims data.

Lipid Testing Trends Before and After Hospitalization for Myocardial Infarction Among Adults in the United States, 2008-2019.

Background: Routine monitoring of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) identifies patients who may benefit from modifying lipid-lowering therapies (LLT). However, the extent to which LDL-C testing is occurring in clinical practice is unclear, specifically among patients hospitalized for a myocardial infarction (MI).

Methods: Using US commercial claims data, we identified patients with an incident MI hospitalization between 01/01/2008-03/31/2019.

The Impact of Depression and Exercise Self-Efficacy on Benefits of Pulmonary Rehabilitation in Veterans with COPD.

Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) improves health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and exercise capacity. Little is known about the impact of depression symptoms and exercise self-efficacy on improvements in these key PR outcomes. This study examined the impact of baseline depression status and change in depression symptoms (Beck Depression Inventory-II [BDI-II] score) over the course of PR on change in HRQoL assessed by the Chronic Respiratory Disease Questionnaire-Self Reported (CRQ-SR) and exercise capacity as measured by the 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT).

Epidural versus general anesthesia for open pyloromyotomy in infants: A retrospective observational study.

Background: Thoracic epidural anesthesia for open infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis surgery is a controversial issue in the presence of little comparative data.

Aims: To compare this approach to general anesthesia for desaturation events (≤90% oxygen saturation) and absolute values of minimal oxygen saturation, minimal heart frequency, operating-room occupancy time, and durations of surgery in a retrospective study design.

Methods: Data were retrieved for patients with infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis managed by thoracic epidurals under sedation or general anesthesia with rapid sequence induction between 01/2007 and 12/2017.

S100B protein and neuron-specific enolase as predictors of postoperative cognitive dysfunction in aged dogs: a case-control study.

Objective: Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) may be related to brain injury. S100B protein and neuron-specific enolase (NSE) have been investigated as potential biochemical markers of neural cell injury in animals and humans. This study aimed to investigate the association between POCD, brain injury and serum concentrations of S100B and NSE after periodontal surgery in aged dogs.

A randomized trial of a brief behavioral health lifestyle program for outpatient cardiology clinics.

Research on lifestyle programs for patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) has largely recruited from hospitals and/or recruited following acute coronary syndrome. By contrast, this study evaluated a 3-session behavioral health program for patients with stable CAD treated in an outpatient cardiology clinic. Thirty-three patients were randomized to the behavioral lifestyle intervention or to Treatment as Usual (TAU).

Objectives: Findings on the health impact of moderate alcohol use in later-life have been discrepant. Unaddressed mechanisms of action and validity concerns may contribute to contrasting results. Several studies have demonstrated a beneficial relationship between moderate alcohol use and functional ability.

Objective: To examine the factor structure of the CSS and to increase its utility to triage patients for referral to services based on a needs assessment.

Influence of Sodium Salts on the Swelling and Rheology of Hydrophobically Cross-linked Hydrogels Determined by QCM-D.

Hydrophobically modified copolymers provide a versatile platform of hydrogel materials for diverse applications, but the influence of salts on the swelling and material properties of this class of hydrogels has not been extensively studied. Here, we investigate model hydrogels with three different sodium salts with anions chosen from the classic Hofmeister series to determine how these counterions influence the swelling and mechanical properties of neutral hydrogels. The gel chosen was based on a statistical copolymer of dimethylacrylamide and 2-(-ethylperfluorooctane sulfonamido) ethyl acrylate (FOSA).

Hydrogels are used widely for exploratory tissue engineering studies. However, currently no hydrogel systems have been reported that exhibit a wide range of elastic modulus without changing precursor concentration, identity, or stoichiometry. Herein, ester and amide-based PEG-oxime hydrogels with tunable moduli (~5-30 kPa) were synthesized with identical precursor mass fraction, stoichiometry, and concentration by varying the pH and buffer concentration of the gelation solution, exploiting the kinetics of oxime bond formation.

Job satisfaction and work overload among mental health nurses in the south of Brazil.

This study assessed job satisfaction and work overload among doctors, nurses, psychologists, and nursing technicians working in community mental health services and conducted a comparison between nurses and other healthcare professionals. Using convenience sampling, a cross-sectional study was conducted with 61 healthcare professionals working in psychosocial care centers in a municipality located in the South Region of Brazil. Data was collected using a sociodemographic questionnaire, work impact assessment scale (Impacto - Br), and mental health professional satisfaction scale (Satis - Br).

Serum level of nerve growth factor is a potential biomarker of conversion to bipolar disorder in women with major depressive disorder.

Aim: The aim of this study was to identify biomarkers associated with major depressive disorder (MDD) and conversion from MDD to bipolar disorder (BD) in an outpatient sample of women.

Statistical considerations in a delayed-start design to demonstrate disease modification effect in neurodegenerative disorders.

There has been a paradigm shift in diagnostic conceptualization of Alzheimer's disease (AD) based on the current evidence suggesting that structure and biology changes start to occur before clinical symptoms emerge. Consequently, therapeutic drug development is also shifting to treat early AD patients using biomarkers for enrichment in clinical trials. A similar paradigm shift is occurring for Parkinson disease.

Strain rate dependent nanostructure of hydrogels with reversible hydrophobic associations during uniaxial extension.

An energy dissipation mechanism during deformation is required to impart toughness to hydrogels. Here we describe how in situ small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) provides insight into possible energy dissipation mechanisms for a tough hydrogel based on an amphiphilic copolymer where nanoscale associations of the hydrophobic moieties act as effective crosslinks. The mechanical properties of the hydrogels are intimately coupled with the nanostructure that provides reversible crosslinks and evolves during deformation.

Metabolic syndrome, depression and anhedonia among young adults.

The aim of this study was to assess the association between anhedonia and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in a well-characterized community sample of individuals with a current depressive episode. This is a cross-sectional study with young adults aged 24-30 years old. Depressive episode and the presence of anhedonia was assessed using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview - Plus version (MINI Plus).

Serum Biomarkers and Clinical Outcomes in Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury: Prospective Cohort Study.

Background: A plethora of reactive cellular responses emerge immediately after a traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) and may influence the patient's outcomes. We investigated whether serum concentrations of neuron-specific enolase, interleukin-6, glial-derived neurotrophic factor, and neurotrophic growth factor reflect the acute-phase responses to different etiologies of SCI and may serve as predictive biomarkers of neurologic and functional outcomes.

Methods: Fifty-two patients were admitted to the intensive care unit after SCI due to traffic accidents, falls, and firearm wounds and had blood samples collected within 48 hours and 7 days after SCI.
