C branched saturated fatty acids (BSFA) are used as ingredients in cosmetics and lubricants and are produced the hydrogenation of C branched unsaturated fatty acids (BUFA). Industrial-grade C BUFA contain the odorous by-product γ-stearolactone (GSL), which must be removed by acid-catalysed ring-opening of GSL into oleic acid. Zeolites such as Y and beta can facilitate the ring-opening, but due to the dimensions of GSL the activity is expected to be limited by diffusion into the micropores.

A microscope collects a series of 2D projections of the sample, and the goal is to reconstruct the 3D density of the sample called the tomogram. Reconstruction is difficult as the 2D projections are noisy and can not be recorded from all directions, resulting in a missing wedge of information.

Methods: This prospective, single center study included n = 44 consecutive patients with a clinical indication for lumbar MRI at our university radiology department between September 2022 and March 2023. MRI examinations were performed on 1.
Aims/hypothesis: Colony stimulating factor 1 (CSF1) promotes the proliferation, differentiation and survival of macrophages, which have been implicated in both beneficial and detrimental effects on glucose metabolism. However, the physiological role of CSF1 signalling in glucose homeostasis and the potential therapeutic implications of modulating this pathway are not known. We aimed to study the composition of tissue macrophages (and other immune cells) following CSF1 receptor (CSF1R) inhibition and elucidate the metabolic consequences of CSF1R inhibition.

Here, we asked whether BH3-mimetics inhibiting BCL2 proteins may eliminate chemoresistant neuroblastoma cells.
Methods: We utilised cisplatin-adapted neuroblastoma cell lines as well as patient tissues before and after relapse to study alterations of BCL2 proteins upon chemoresistance.
Although the overall survival in pediatric rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) has increased over the last decades, the most aggressive subtype of alveolar RMS is in dire need of novel treatment strategies. RMS cells evade cell death induction and immune control by increasing the expression of inhibitors of apoptosis proteins (IAPs), which can be exploited and targeted with stimulation with Smac mimetics. Here, we used the Smac mimetic BV6 to re-sensitize RMS spheroids to cell death, which increased killing induced by natural killer (NK) cells.

Prohormone convertase 1/3 (PC1/3) is an endopeptidase required for the processing of neurotransmitters and hormones. PC1/3 deficiency and genome-wide association studies relate PC1/3 with early onset obesity.

Recently, IL-1β was shown to stimulate postprandial insulin secretion. Here, we describe that this incretin-like effect of IL-1β involves neuronal transmission.

We assessed the role that colonic macrophage subpopulations play in glucose homeostasis in mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD).

Previous studies suggested rare skeletal myopathies as a noncardiac source of cTnT. We aimed to confirm the reliability/cardiac specificity of cTnT in patients with various skeletal muscle disorders (SMDs).

The impact of remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) on TAVR associated systemic inflammation is unknown and was focus of this study.
Methods: We performed a prospective controlled trial at a single center and included 66 patients treated with remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) prior to TAVR, who were matched to a control group by propensity score.
The induction of apoptosis is a direct way to eliminate tumor cells and improve cancer therapy. Apoptosis is tightly controlled by the balance of pro- and antiapoptotic Bcl-2 proteins. BH3 mimetics neutralize the antiapoptotic function of Bcl-2 proteins and are highly promising compounds inducing apoptosis in several cancer entities including pediatric malignancies.

It was the objective of this study to evaluate morbidity, mortality, use of veterinary drugs and production output on seven representative Swiss beef fatteners, who bought on a regular basis batches of calves from traders (mean age and weight: 31 day, 75 kg) and practised an all in-all out system. From March 2015 until May 2016, 51 batches with a total of 1307 calves were included. The use of drugs during the first eight weeks following delivery of calves from the trader, casualty rate and carcass performance of 837 bulls.

Methods: Here, we performed left anterior descending coronary artery ligation in rats as a model for ischemic systolic heart failure and examined the time- and region-specific regulation of calpain-1 and calpain-2 in the left ventricular myocardium.
Results: Following anterior wall myocardial infarction, calpain activity was significantly increased restricted to the ischemic anterior area at days 1, 5 and 14.
Aging is the prime risk factor for the development of type 2 diabetes. We investigated the role of the interleukin-1 (IL-1) system on insulin secretion in aged mice. During aging, expression of the protective IL-1 receptor antagonist decreased in islets, whereas IL-1beta gene expression increased specifically in the CD45 + islet immune cell fraction.

Approach And Results: Pancreatic cancer patients (N=145) were included in a prospective, observational cohort study (CATS [Vienna Cancer and Thrombosis Study]).
Background: The study analyzes changes in lung function, pulmonary pressure and diffusing capacity of the lung in patients with mitral valve regurgitation (MR) treated by MitraClip implantation.
Methods: A total of 43 patients (19 women and 24 men with an average age of 78.0 ± 6.
The risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) and arterial thromboembolism (ATE) associated with immune checkpoint inhibitors is currently unclear. Our aim was to quantify the risk of VTE/ATE in patients with cancer treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors, explore clinical impact, and investigate potential clinical risk factors. Patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors at the Medical University of Vienna from 2015 to 2018 were identified using in-house pharmacy records (n = 672; most frequent entities: 30.

Insulin has been shown to act centrally to regulate food intake and glucose metabolism and the cephalic phase of insulin secretion may contribute to these functions. Though well documented in laboratory animals, the existence of cephalic phase insulin release in humans has recently come into question.

Based on the well documented role of inflammation in type 2 diabetes, the aim was to investigate the role of inflammation in GDM. Chromogranin B and inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate-associated calcium signaling leading to increased natriuretic peptide production has been described in cardiac hypertrophy. Here, we performed left anterior descending coronary artery ligation in rats as a model for systolic heart failure and examined protein and gene expression clusters in the infarcted and noninfarcted myocardium and moreover under treatment with metoprolol. We found that atrial natriuretic peptide gene transcription was significantly more elevated in the infarcted compared with the noninfarcted myocardium.
