The influence of xeno-free culture conditions on the angiogenic and adipogenic differentiation properties of adipose tissue-derived stem cells.

Introduction: Before performing cell therapy clinical trials, it is important to understand how cells are influenced by different growth conditions and to find optimal xeno-free medium formulations. In this study we have investigated the properties of adipose tissue-derived stem cells (ASCs) cultured under xeno-free conditions.

Methods: Human lipoaspirate samples were digested to yield the stromal vascular fraction cells which were then seeded in i) Minimum Essential Medium-α (MEM-α) supplemented with 10 % (v/v) fetal bovine serum (FBS), ii) MEM-α supplemented with 2 % (v/v) human platelet lysate (PLT) or iii) PRIME-XV MSC expansion XSFM xeno-free, serum free medium (XV).

An Information Manifold Perspective for Analyzing Test Data.

Modifications of current psychometric models for analyzing test data are proposed that produce an additive scale measure of information. This information measure is a one-dimensional space curve or curved surface manifold that is invariant across varying manifold indexing systems. The arc length along a curve manifold is used as it is an additive metric having a defined zero and a version of the bit as a unit.

Item response theory-based continuous test norming.

In norm-referenced psychological testing, an individual's performance is expressed in relation to a reference population using a standardized score, like an intelligence quotient score. The reference population can depend on a continuous variable, like age. Current continuous norming methods transform the raw score into an age-dependent standardized score.

Cognitive ability, gender, and well-being in school contexts: longitudinal evidence from Sweden.

While well-being does generally constitute a moderate predictor of school achievement, research on the predictive validity of cognitive ability for well-being in school contexts remains scant. The current study analyzed longitudinal relations between cognitive ability measured at age 13 (Grade 6) and well-being measured at age 18 (Grade 12, valid  = 2,705) in a Swedish sample, using several multivariate model techniques. The results indicate that cognitive ability was not a statistically significant predictor when several predictors were entered in a multiple regression model.

Fasting triglyceride concentrations are associated with markers of lipid metabolism and glucose homeostasis in healthy, non-obese dogs in lean and overweight condition.

Serum triglyceride concentrations increase in dogs with obesity, which is typically assessed by body condition score (BCS), however little is known about changes that take place in non-obese dogs in overweight condition. Further, the associations of triglyceride levels with other markers of energy homeostasis are poorly characterised in healthy animals. The present study aimed to evaluate associations between both BCS and triglyceride concentrations with other markers of lipid and glucose metabolism in healthy, non-obese dogs, as well as to assess whether these markers change significantly in non-obese dogs with overweight as compared to their lean counterparts.

The impact of a soft robotic glove on activity performance and body function for brachial plexus birth injury patients-A longitudinal case series.

Background: A brachial plexus birth injury (BPBI) can cause reduced ability to use the arm and hand in daily activities due to reduced grip strength and endurance. A soft robotic glove can increase the number of activities performed and improve activity performance for patients with neurological disease. The use of a soft robotic glove for patients with BPBI has not been studied.

Sexual harassment and patterns of symptoms and functional abilities in a psychiatric sample of adolescents.

Purpose: To investigate how commonly adolescent psychiatric outpatients with symptoms of depression and anxiety report having been subjected to sexual harassment, and to explore how symptoms and functional abilities differ between adolescent psychiatric outpatients with symptoms of depression and anxiety who do report and those who do not report having been subjected to sexual harassment.

Efficiency Analysis of Item Response Theory Kernel Equating for Mixed-Format Tests.

This study aims to evaluate the performance of Item Response Theory (IRT) kernel equating in the context of mixed-format tests by comparing it to IRT observed score equating and kernel equating with log-linear presmoothing. Comparisons were made through both simulations and real data applications, under both equivalent groups (EG) and non-equivalent groups with anchor test (NEAT) sampling designs. To prevent bias towards IRT methods, data were simulated with and without the use of IRT models.

Identification of novel genetic risk factors of dilated cardiomyopathy: from canine to human.

Background: Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a life-threatening heart disease and a common cause of heart failure due to systolic dysfunction and subsequent left or biventricular dilatation. A significant number of cases have a genetic etiology; however, as a complex disease, the exact genetic risk factors are largely unknown, and many patients remain without a molecular diagnosis.

Methods: We performed GWAS followed by whole-genome, transcriptome, and immunohistochemical analyses in a spontaneously occurring canine model of DCM.

Demographics and deprivation in obstetric brachial plexus palsy: a retrospective cohort study.

The present study analyses the relationships between deprivation and obstetric brachial plexus palsy (OBPP). A retrospective observational study was conducted of infants with OBPP seen between 2008 and 2020 ( = 321). The index of multiple deprivation (IMD) was used to assign an IMD rank to patients based on birth postcode and the relationship with OBPP was analysed, including deprivation, gestational diabetes, age at referral and at first assessment.

Background: The use of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for the development of tissue-engineered constructs has advanced in recent years. However, future clinically approved products require following good manufacturing practice (GMP) guidelines. This includes using alternatives to xenogeneic-derived cell culture supplements to avoid rejection of the transplants.

Evaluating Equating Transformations in IRT Observed-Score and Kernel Equating Methods.

Test equating is a statistical procedure to ensure that scores from different test forms can be used interchangeably. There are several methodologies available to perform equating, some of which are based on the Classical Test Theory (CTT) framework and others are based on the Item Response Theory (IRT) framework. This article compares equating transformations originated from three different frameworks, namely IRT Observed-Score Equating (IRTOSE), Kernel Equating (KE), and IRT Kernel Equating (IRTKE).

MRI detection of brain gadolinium retention in multiple sclerosis: Magnetization transfer vs. T1-weighted imaging.

Background And Purpose: Evidence of brain gadolinium retention has affected gadolinium-based contrast agent usage. It is, however, unclear to what extent macrocyclic agents are retained and whether their in vivo detection may necessitate nonconventional MRI. Magnetization transfer (MT) could prove suitable to detect gadolinium-related signal changes since dechelated gadolinium ions bind to macromolecules.

Psychometric validity of the Montgomery and Åsberg Depression Rating Scale for Youths (MADRS-Y).

In surgical patients, diabetes is associated with increased length of hospital stay and complications. Optimal glycaemic control is important to reduce complications, and enhanced recovery after surgery/fast-track protocols reduce the impact of surgery on glucose homeostasis. Injuries to large peripheral nerves are often associated with tissue defects and require reconstruction using autologous nerve grafts, which have limited availability and result in donor site morbidity. Background: The Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS®) aims to provide self-reported item banks for several dimensions of physical, mental and social health. Here we investigate the psychometric properties of the Swedish pediatric versions of the Physical Health item banks for pain interference, fatigue and physical activity which can be used in school health care and other clinical pediatric settings. Effects of Empagliflozin on Myocardial Flow Reserve in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: The SIMPLE Trial.

Water jet-assisted lipoaspiration and Sepax cell separation system for the isolation of adipose stem cells with high adipogenic potential.

Introduction: Water jet-assisted liposuction has gained popularity due to favourable fat grafting outcomes. In this study, we compared stem cells obtained from fat isolated with manual or the water jet-assisted procedure.

Methods: Liposuction of abdominal fat was performed using the two methods on each donor (n = 10).
