Accelerating Medicines Partnership® Schizophrenia (AMP® SCZ): Rationale and Study Design of the Largest Global Prospective Cohort Study of Clinical High Risk for Psychosis.

This article describes the rationale, aims, and methodology of the Accelerating Medicines Partnership® Schizophrenia (AMP® SCZ). This is the largest international collaboration to date that will develop algorithms to predict trajectories and outcomes of individuals at clinical high risk (CHR) for psychosis and to advance the development and use of novel pharmacological interventions for CHR individuals. We present a description of the participating research networks and the data processing analysis and coordination center, their processes for data harmonization across 43 sites from 13 participating countries (recruitment across North America, Australia, Europe, Asia, and South America), data flow and quality assessment processes, data analyses, and the transfer of data to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Data Archive (NDA) for use by the research community.

The effectiveness of peer support from a person with lived experience of mental health challenges for young people with anxiety and depression: a systematic review.

Background: Peer workers support individuals experiencing mental health challenges by drawing on their shared lived experience. Peer support has become increasingly popular for young people with anxiety and depression, but the evidence base is unclear. This systematic review aimed to understand the effectiveness of peer support for youth depression and anxiety (either primary or comorbid), and to understand in which contexts, for whom, and why peer support works.

Implementing a combined individual placement and support and vocational peer work program in integrated youth mental health settings.

Aim: To describe the implementation and outcomes of a combined individual placement and support (IPS) and vocational peer work program for young people with mental ill-health.

Methods: This uncontrolled pilot study co-located IPS workers and vocational peer workers within two integrated youth mental health services (provided to clients aged 15-25 years old). Employment outcomes included job placements (working 15 hours or more per week in a paid competitive job in the open employment market) and sustained employment (employed for at least 26 weeks).

Isolating the impact of antipsychotic medication on metabolic health: Secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial of antipsychotic medication versus placebo in antipsychotic medication naïve first-episode psychosis (the STAGES study).

Background: Cardiovascular and metabolic diseases are the leading contributors to the early mortality associated with psychotic disorders. To date, it has not been possible to disentangle the effect of medication and non-medication factors on the physical health of people with a first episode of psychosis (FEP). This study aimed to isolate the effects of antipsychotic medication on anthropometric measurements, fasting glucose and lipids.

Decisional capacity in young people with first episode psychosis, major depressive disorder and no mental disorder.

We aimed to (1) examine decisional capacity for treatment in young people (aged 15 to 25 years) with first-episode psychosis (FEP), Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and no mental disorder, and (2) determine which theoretically relevant factors are associated with, and predict decisional capacity. We assessed decisional capacity (using MacArthur Competence Assessment Tool-Treatment; MacCAT-T), cognitive abilities, insight and symptom severity in young people with no mental disorder ( = 38), MDD ( = 38) and FEP ( = 18) from inpatient and outpatient services. Cognitive ability and metabolic physical health in first-episode psychosis.

Cognitive impairments are a core feature of first-episode psychosis (FEP), arising before illness onset and antipsychotic exposure. Individuals with chronic psychosis experience poorer physical health while taking antipsychotic medication, but health disparities may be evident at FEP onset, prior to antipsychotic exposure. Given the links between cognition and physical health in healthy populations, the aim was to explore whether cognition and physical health are associated in FEP, which could inform early physical health interventions for cognition in FEP.

Visualization of Epidermal Reservoir Formation from Topical Diclofenac Gels by Raman Spectroscopy.

Purpose: This work investigated whether topical pain relief diclofenac gels can form a diclofenac reservoir in the epidermal and dermal layers of human skin.

Methods: Excised human skin samples were treated with three topical diclofenac gels ex vivo and examined using Raman microscopy of transversally microtomed sections. The relative diclofenac concentration in the skin layers was calculated as the ratio of the integrated areas of bands characteristic of diclofenac (~445 cm) and skin (Amide I).

Sexual Health, HIV Care and Pre-exposure Prophylaxis in the African Immigrant Population: A Needs Assessment.

The objective was to gain insight, from the perspective of healthcare professionals, non-medical service providers and community-based organizations working with a large majority of African immigrant patients or clients, regarding sexual health and the potential for the use of HIV PrEP in this priority population. Thirty key informants participated in a needs assessment. A questionnaire was used to obtain information through focus groups, structured interviews and by self-administration.

HIV risk and barriers to care for African-born immigrant women: a sociocultural outlook.

Background: Data from the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) HIV/AIDS Surveillance Report 2015 show that African-born (AB) women continue to be disproportionately affected by HIV. In 2015, these women accounted for more than half (54%) of all new cases of HIV reported among females in Minnesota and 34% of all known female cases in the state. This study was a needs assessment for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in vulnerable subgroups within the AB population and adequacy of HIV care for AB persons.

'What vision?': experiences of Team members in a community service for adults with intellectual disabilities.

Background: In the UK, the closure of 'long-stay' hospitals was accompanied by the development of community teams (CTs) to support people with intellectual disabilities (IDs) to live in community settings. The self-reported experiences of staff working in such teams have been neglected.

Methods: Focusing on a single county-wide service, comprising five multi-disciplinary and inter-agency CTs, we measured perceptions among the health care and care management Team members of (1) their personal well-being; (2) the functioning of their team; and (3) the organisation's commitment to quality, and culture.

Direct probe-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry of cross-linked copolymers and copolymer blends.

Complex copolymers are heated to slowly increasing temperatures on a direct probe (DP) inside the plasma of the atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) source of a quadrupole ion trap. Slow heating allows for temporal separation of the thermal degradation products according to the stabilities of the bonds being cleaved. The products released from the DP are identified in situ by APCI mass spectrometry and tandem mass spectrometry.

Longitudinal relations between marital conflict and child adjustment: vagal regulation as a protective factor.

Although associations between marital conflict and children's adjustment problems are established, less is known about child individual differences that can have an impact on these relations. The authors examined longitudinal relations between marital conflict and children's adjustment using a community sample of elementary school-age children and young adolescents and assessed the role of children's vagal regulation in moderating the conflict-child problems link. Elevated marital conflict was predictive of negative child outcomes, and greater vagal suppression to a simulated argument was protective against internalizing problems associated with marital conflict.

Functional effects of glycosylation at Asn-579 of the epidermal growth factor receptor.

We have investigated functional effects of glycosylation at N(579) of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). Our previous study showed that the population of cell-surface expressed EGFRs in A431 cells, a human epidermoid carcinoma cell line, is composed of two subpopulations that differ by glycosylation at N(579) [Zhen et al. (2003) Biochemistry 42, 5478-5492].

Perceptions of contradictory communication from parental figures by adults with borderline personality disorder: a preliminary study.

This study investigated a hypothesized correlation between contradictory responses from parental figures perceived in present-day interactions by adult subjects and the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder (BPD). One hundred subjects were given a questionnaire designed to assess the frequency of perceived parental response patterns divided into appropriate, conflicting, polarized, and neglectful categories. The BPD and a group subthreshold for the disorder endorsed significantly more conflicting and fewer appropriate responses for the first parental figure rated than did both patient control subjects and normal control subjects without BPD; a trend toward similar results was found for the second parental figure also.

Solution structure of the symmetric coiled coil tetramer formed by the oligomerization domain of hnRNP C: implications for biological function.

During active cell division, heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein (hnRNP) C is one of the most abundant proteins in the nucleus. hnRNP C exists as a stable tetramer that binds about 230 nucleotides of pre-mRNA and functions in vivo to package nascent transcripts and nucleate assembly of the 40 S hnRNP complex. Previous studies have shown that monomers lacking or possessing mutant oligomerization domains bind RNA with low affinity, strongly suggesting a cooperative protomer-RNA binding mode.

Children's coping with marital conflict and their adjustment and physical health: vulnerability and protective functions.

Children's strategies for coping with parental marital conflict were examined as predictors, mediators, and moderators of the relations between marital conflict and 8- to 11-year-olds' internalizing, externalizing, and physical health problems. In the context of marital conflict, a higher level of active coping and support coping combined was a protective factor against girls' depression symptoms and self-esteem problems and both boys' and girls' health problems. Further, avoidance coping was a vulnerability factor for externalizing, internalizing, and physical health problems in boys, and distraction coping was protective against children's depression and health problems.
