We present a modification to prior Achilles tendon repair techniques that utilizes readily available noncommercial instrumentation, mini-open incisions, and supine positioning, thus maximizing surgical efficiencies and reducing complications. In our experience, this is a safe and effective technique that minimizes anesthetic requirements and operating room time. Level V, expert opinion.

Infertility is a devastating problem around the world, particularly in the high fertility context of sub-Saharan Africa. Regardless of its medical origins, infertility causes African women personal grief and economic deprivation. This research was conducted among the Ijo who are organized into exogamous patrilineal descent groups.

Although infertility causes women considerable grief, social stigma, and economic deprivation, scholars have paid little attention to infertility's definitions that may depart from the standard Western usage and how such definitions influence the way women experience the condition. This article, by listening to individual women's experiences of infertility in two Nigerian communities, examines these definitions and differentiates between culturally salient categories of infertility. In distinguishing between different kinds of childless women and those with low fertility, we intend to enhance understandings of infertility by considering women's subjective understandings of the condition and thus moving beyond the current medical definition.

We present the first measurement of polarization and CP-violating asymmetries in a B(s)(0) decay into two light vector mesons, B(s)(0)→φφ, and an improved determination of its branching ratio using 295 decays reconstructed in a data sample corresponding to 2.9 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected by the CDF experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The fraction of longitudinal polarization is determined to be f(L)=0.

Article Synopsis
  • The study measures the top-quark mass using data from t ̄t events at the Fermilab Tevatron, specifically with a luminosity of 5.7 fb(-1) from p ̄p collisions at √s=1.96 TeV.
  • The analysis focuses on events with large missing transverse energy and contains four to six jets, ensuring at least one b-tagged jet while excluding identified charged leptons.
  • Utilizing a multidimensional template method, the researchers fit the data to signal and background templates to determine the top-quark mass as M(top)=172.32±2.4(stat)±1.0(syst)  GeV/c(2).

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers are investigating a new particle called T', which would decay into a top quark and another undetected particle (X).
  • They conducted experiments using data from p p collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron, focusing on specific decay channels where T' pairs are produced.
  • Their findings align with standard model predictions and establish a limit on the existence of T' as a fourth generation quark, excluding its presence up to a mass of 400 GeV/c² when considering X has a mass less than or equal to 70 GeV/c².

A search has been performed for B(s)(0) → μ+ μ- and B(0) → μ+ μ- decays using 7 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The observed number of B(0) candidates is consistent with background-only expectations and yields an upper limit on the branching fraction of B(B(0) → μ+ μ-) < 6.0 × 10(-9) at 95% confidence level.

Article Synopsis
  • The study measures the cross section of prompt isolated photon pair production in proton-proton collisions at the Tevatron using data collected by the CDF II detector.
  • The results are compared against three different predictions from perturbative quantum chromodynamics (QCD), highlighting the differences in their accuracy.
  • The next-to-leading order calculations perform well, and the parton shower prediction matches their accuracy when accounting for photon radiation from quarks before and after hard scattering.

The observation of the bottom, strange baryon Ξ(b)(0) through the decay chain Ξ(b)(0)→Ξ(c)(+)π-, where ΞΞ(c)(+)→Ξ- π+ π+, Ξ-→Λπ-, and Λ→pπ-, is reported by using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.2  fb(-1) from pp collisions at square root(s)=1.96  TeV recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab.

Using Zγ candidate events collected by the CDF detector at the Tevatron Collider, we search for potential anomalous (non-standard-model) couplings between the Z boson and the photon. Zγ couplings vanish at tree level and are heavily suppressed at higher orders; hence any evidence of couplings indicates new physics. Measurements are performed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.

We present the first model independent search for three-jet hadronic resonances within multijet events in sqrt(s) = 1.96  TeV pp collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron using the CDF II detector. Pair production of supersymmetric gluinos and squarks with hadronic R-parity violating decays is employed as an example of a new physics benchmark for this signature.
