Understanding Autism as a Condition in Mental Health Clinical Practice: Clinical Perspectives from a Youth Early Psychosis Service.

Autism is a rapidly growing phenomenon, with rates of diagnosed autism in the community rising every decade. Autism and traits of autism are also regularly part of presentation at youth mental health services, including early psychosis services. In early psychosis services young people's symptoms tend to be formulated through a psychosis lens, rather than a neurodevelopmental lens which can lead to unnecessary medicalised treatment, and treatment plans that do not consider the possible impact of neurodiversity.

A framework for monitoring RSV prevention product effectiveness in the United States.

During 2023, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended the first respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) immunizations intended for widespread use in the United States to prevent severe RSV illness in infants and older adults. CDC, in collaboration with federal, public health, and academic partners, is conducting evaluations of real-world effectiveness of recommended RSV immunization products in the United States. Similar frameworks for evaluation are being applied to RSV vaccines and nirsevimab, a long-acting preventative monoclonal antibody, to estimate product effectiveness.

Craniofacial Pain Locations and Outcomes After Endoscopic Sinus Surgery for Unilateral Sphenoid Sinusitis: A Multi-Institutional Study.

Introduction: Unilateral sphenoid sinus opacification on computed tomography is caused by a variety of pathologies including inflammatory and infectious sinusitis, benign and malignant tumors, and encephaloceles. The purpose of this study was to report craniofacial pain locations and outcomes in inflammatory unilateral sphenoid sinusitis (USS) patients who underwent endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS).

Methods: A multi-institutional retrospective cohort study was conducted on all adult patients who had ESS for USS from 2015 to 2022.

Icosahedral dsDNA viruses such as the tailed bacteriophages and herpesviruses have a conserved pathway to virion assembly that is initiated from a scaffolding protein driven procapsid formation. The dsDNA is actively packaged into procapsids, which undergo complex maturation reactions to form infectious virions. In bacteriophage P22, scaffolding protein (SP) directs the assembly of coat proteins into procapsids that have a T=7 icosahedral arrangement, en route to the formation of the mature P22 capsid.

The X-ray crystal structure data of 12-α-fluoro-3β-hy-droxy-olean-28,13β-olide methanol hemisolvate, 2CHFO·CHOH, (), and 12-α-fluoro-3β-hy-droxy-taraxer-28,14β-olide methanol hemisolvate, 2CHFO·CHOH, (), are described. The fluoro-lactonization of oleanolic acid using Selectfluor yielded a mixture of the six-membered δ-lactone () and the unusual seven-membered γ-lactone () following a 1,2-shift of methyl C-27 from C-14 to C-13.

A High Vitamin C Micronutrient Supplement Is Unable to Attenuate Inflammation in People with Metabolic Syndrome but May Improve Metabolic Health Indices: A Randomised Controlled Trial.

Chronic low-grade inflammation is a characteristic of people with metabolic syndrome and is thought to contribute to the condition progressing to the more severe type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD). The aim was to carry out a double-blind randomised placebo-controlled trial in people with metabolic syndrome to determine if supplementation with a micronutrient formula containing 1000 mg/d vitamin C could attenuate inflammation in people with metabolic syndrome. We recruited 72 adults aged a median of 52 years with metabolic syndrome, defined as obesity (based on waist circumference or BMI), and at least two of hyperglycaemia, raised triglycerides, lowered HDL cholesterol, hypertension, or taking medications for these conditions.

Adolescent Violence in the Home Among Youth Presenting to an Early Psychosis Service: An Exploration of Contributing Factors.

Adolescent violence in the home is a growing public health issue and remains under reported and under-researched. The focus of the present research is to investigate factors that may contribute to adolescent violence in the home, among acohort of young people with co-occurring early psychosis. Data relates to 50 young people (16 females, 33 males, 1 nonbinary) aged from 16-25 who were clients at a youth early psychosis service in Melbourne, Australia.

Racial Disparities in Head and Neck Cancer: It's Not Just About Access.

Objective: Medical literature identifies stark racial disparities in head and neck cancer (HNC) in the United States, primarily between non-Hispanic white (NHW) and non-Hispanic black (NHB) populations. The etiology of this disparity is often attributed to inequitable access to health care and socioeconomic status (SES). However, other contributors have been reported.

Clinical outcomes of peripheral nerve interfaces for rehabilitation in paralysis and amputation: a literature review.

Peripheral nerve interfaces (PNIs) are electrical systems designed to integrate with peripheral nerves in patients, such as following central nervous system (CNS) injuries to augment or replace CNS control and restore function. We review the literature for clinical trials and studies containing clinical outcome measures to explore the utility of human applications of PNIs. We discuss the various types of electrodes currently used for PNI systems and their functionalities and limitations.

Evaluating the impact of minimum unit pricing for alcohol in Scotland: a theory-based synthesis of the evidence.

Background: In May 2018, the Scottish Government set a minimum unit price (MUP) of £0·50 per unit of alcohol sold in Scotland to reduce alcohol-related health harms. We synthesised evidence to establish the effects of MUP on alcohol-related health and social harms, at population level and within specific societal groups.

Methods: We did a theory-based synthesis of academic and grey research evidence about impacts of MUP in Scotland, including compliance, price, consumption, health outcomes, social outcomes, public attitudes, and the alcoholic drinks industry.

"Repository of Cochlear Implant Information:" A Multi-Institutional REDCap Database.

Purpose: To describe the creation of a multi-center cochlear implant database as a template for future medical database design. The first clinical question examined was the association between BMI on cochlear implant surgical time and postoperative outcome.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective repository in REDCap, named the "Repository of Cochlear Implant Information" (ROCII), was created and collected de-identified data on patients who underwent cochlear implantation.

"What makes discovery college different?" a co-produced analysis of student experiences of discovery college.

Background: Recovery colleges are an education-based approach to supporting mental health recovery that incorporate the voice of both lived and living experience, and experience by training in their design, production, and delivery.

Aims: To understand students' experiences of attending a youth-focused 'discovery college' course. Specifically, to see whether students were satisfied with the course, whether the learning goals of the courses were met, and what students felt makes discovery college different.

NMR structure verifies the eponymous zinc finger domain of transcription factor ZNF750.

ZNF750 is a nuclear transcription factor that activates skin differentiation and has tumor suppressor roles in several cancers. Unusually, ZNF750 has only a single zinc-finger (ZNF) domain, Z*, with an amino acid sequence that differs markedly from the CCHH family consensus. Because of its sequence differences Z* is classified as degenerate, presumed to have lost the ability to bind the zinc ion required for folding.

Imaging Spectrum of the Developing Glioblastoma: A Cross-Sectional Observation Study.

Glioblastoma (GBM) has the typical radiological appearance (TRA) of a centrally necrotic, peripherally enhancing tumor with surrounding edema. The objective of this study was to determine whether the developing GBM displays a spectrum of imaging changes detectable on routine clinical imaging prior to TRA GBM. Patients with pre-operative imaging diagnosed with GBM (1 January 2014-31 March 2022) were identified from a neuroscience center.

Design, Methods, and Select Baseline Results from a School Nutrition Project for Adolescents in Bangladesh.

Background: The School Nutrition for Adolescents Project (SNAP) provided weekly iron and folic acid (WIFA) supplementation and menstrual hygiene management (MHM) support for girls; actions to improve water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) practices; and behavior change interventions to adolescents aged 10-19 y in 65 intervention schools in 2 districts of Bangladesh.

Objectives: We aimed to describe the project design and select baseline results of students and school project implementers.

Methods: Girls (n = 2244) and boys (n = 773) in 74 schools (clusters) and project implementers [headteachers (n = 74), teachers (n = 96), and student leaders (n = 91)] participated in a survey assessing nutrition, MHM, and WASH knowledge and experience.

The Prevalence of Anemia in Children Aged 6-23 Months and its Correlates Differ by District in Kapilvastu and Achham Districts in Nepal.

Background: Analyses of predictors of anemia or malnutrition often pool national or regional data, which may hide variability at subnational levels.

Objectives: We sought to identify the risk factors for anemia in young Nepali children aged 6-23 mo in 2 districts: Kapilvastu and Achham.

Methods: This is an analysis of two cross-sectional surveys that were conducted as part of a program evaluation of an infant and young child feeding and micronutrient powder intervention that included anemia as a primary outcome.

Integrating Substance Misuse Specialists in a Youth Early Psychosis Service: Increasing Mental Health Clinicians' Knowledge and Confidence.

Substance misuse and mental health disorders are commonly occurring co-morbidities in young people. This paper reports on a pilot project to embed three specialist Alcohol and Other Drug (AoD) workers to be embedded in a youth early psychosis service to upskill mental health clinicians in managing substance misuse. Evaluation of the project used a mixed methods approach.

Reducing the drivers of drug demand in English towns by understanding risk and resilience in the community and developing a framework for partnership action: a mixed methods analysis.

Background: Substance misuse has extensive effects on individuals and communities, ranging from the poor health of people who use drugs to the pressure placed on health care, social services, and the criminal justice system. Strategies to curtail the supply and demand of drugs and reduce these effects typically focus on supply, with less emphasis placed on the drivers of demand. We piloted and evaluated a public health approach for understanding the drivers and effects of substance misuse in a local area, and how these might be targeted for prevention through multi-agency partnership action.

Child and adolescent health in Europe: Towards meeting the 2030 agenda.

Background: Childhood and adolescence are critical stages for a healthy life. To support countries in promoting health and development and improving health care for this age group, the WHO Regional Office for Europe developed the European strategy for child and adolescent health 2015-2020, which was adopted by all countries. This paper reports progress in the strategy's implementation until 2020.

Dual Action of Eeyarestatin 24 on Sec-Dependent Protein Secretion and Bacterial DNA.

Eeyarestatin 24 (ES24) is a promising new antibiotic with broad-spectrum activity. It shares structural similarity with nitrofurantoin (NFT), yet appears to have a distinct and novel mechanism: ES24 was found to inhibit SecYEG-mediated protein transport and membrane insertion in Gram-negative bacteria. However, possible additional targets have not yet been explored.

High-resolution cryo-EM structure of the virus Sf6 genome delivery tail machine.

Sf6 is a bacterial virus that infects the human pathogen Here, we describe the cryo-electron microscopy structure of the Sf6 tail machine before DNA ejection, which we determined at a 2.7-angstrom resolution. We built de novo structures of all tail components and resolved four symmetry-mismatched interfaces.

Synthesis of Stereoenriched Piperidines via Chemo-Enzymatic Dearomatization of Activated Pyridines.

The development of efficient and sustainable methods for the synthesis of nitrogen heterocycles is an important goal for the chemical industry. In particular, substituted chiral piperidines are prominent targets due to their prevalence in medicinally relevant compounds and their precursors. A potential biocatalytic approach to the synthesis of this privileged scaffold would be the asymmetric dearomatization of readily assembled activated pyridines.
