Palsy of the hypoglossal nerve, the 12 cranial nerve, is rare and presents with specific clinical features depending on the anatomical location of the underlying pathology. As such, knowledge of clinical presentation and detailed anatomy of the nerve is vital to aid in localisation and identification of the pathology. This pictorial review details the anatomy of the nerve, including innervation, segments, and branches, with particular reference to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Using single-cell RNA sequencing of EBNA-LP-Knockout (LPKO)-infected B cells, we reveal an antiviral response landscape implicating the 'speckled proteins' as key restriction factors countered by EBNA-LP.

Aortic dissection is the most common thoracic aortic emergency and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Initial complications are dependent on reduction of sheer stress against the aortic wall to protect against rupture and minimize progression of the aortic wall injury. Effectiveness and Safety of Irreversible Electroporation When Used for the Ablation of Stage 3 Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma: Initial Results from the DIRECT Registry Study.

Background/objectives: Overall survival for patients with Stage 3 pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) remains limited, with a median survival of 12 to 15 months. Irreversible electroporation (IRE) is a local tumor ablation method that induces cancerous cell death by disrupting cell membrane homeostasis. The DIRECT Registry study was designed to assess the effectiveness and safety of IRE when combined with standard of care (SOC) treatment for Stage 3 PDAC versus SOC alone in a real-world setting after at least 3 months of induction chemotherapy; Methods: Patients with Stage 3 PDAC treated with IRE plus SOC or SOC alone were prospectively enrolled in a multicenter registry study.

High-fidelity surgical simulator for the performance of craniofacial osteotomies.

Purpose: The oral and maxillofacial (OMF) surgical community is making an active effort to develop new approaches for surgical training in order to compensate for work-hour restrictions, mitigate differences between training standards, and improve the efficiency of learning while minimizing the risks for the patients. Simulation-based learning, a technology adopted in other training paradigms, has the potential to enhance surgeons' knowledge and psychomotor skills.

Methods: We developed a fully immersive, high-fidelity virtual simulation trainer system based on Kitware's open-source visualization and interactive simulation libraries: the Interactive Medical Simulation Toolkit (iMSTK) and the Visualization Toolkit (VTK).

Industrial production of biologics typically involves the integration of transgenes into host cell genomes, most often Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. Epigenetic control of transgene expression is a major determinant of production titers. Although the cytomegalovirus (CMV) promoter has long been used to drive industrial transgene expression, we found that its associated histones are suboptimally acetylated in CHO cells, providing an opportunity to enhance productivity through epigenetic manipulation.

Case Reports in Education: A Virtual Orthopaedic Surgery Summit Enhances Medical Student Confidence in Preparedness for Orthopaedic Surgery Subinternships.

Introduction: Medical school curricula offer limited exposure to orthopaedic surgery, and few national initiatives aim to prepare students for orthopaedic surgery subinternships, which are critical for success in matching into orthopaedic residency. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of a single-day virtual "Subinternship Summit" for medical students in 2 key areas: 1) enhancing participants' confidence in their preparedness for orthopaedic subinternship rotations and 2) mitigating any disparities based on student characteristics, such as race/ethnicity, gender, or whether or not the student's school is affiliated with a "home" orthopaedic program.

Methods: In March 2024, a single-day national virtual summit was held, featuring panels on topics relevant to performance during orthopaedic subinternships.

AI has been shown to improve efficiency in medical image generation, processing, and interpretation, and various such AI models have been developed across research laboratories worldwide.

Cryotherapy is often used to reduce inflammation in acute equine laminitis cases. Certain hoof temperatures have been suggested as effective in minimizing the inflammatory process; however, there is limited evidence on which methods are best at achieving these temperatures. Our objective was to determine how different methods of cryotherapy influence the rate and extent of cooling for the equine hoof wall.

Study Design And Methods: All patients from phase 3 studies TRIUMPH (N = 235) and FREEDOM-EV (N = 690) were included in this post hoc analysis and were classified as having 0, ≥1, or ≥2 cardiovascular comorbidities of interest based on patients' medical histories.

Reduced consumption of animal-sourced food (ASF) has been recommended for environmental and human health objectives; however, ASF can be important for food security and diet affordability. We explored country-level relationships among various metrics of food supply, socioeconomic context, food security, diet affordability, and agricultural greenhouse gas emissions (GHGe) to characterize how optimal inclusion ranges for ASF vary with socioeconomic factors and food system goals. Data from 2015 to 2022 for 153 countries were sourced to generate Bayesian Networks representing relationships among the studied food system metrics.

A registry study on nonsyndromic craniosynostosis: Long-term associations with academic achievement.

Objective: To assess the association between nonsyndromic craniosynostosis (NSC) and academic achievement.

Methods: Registry data were analyzed on demographic background, presence of craniosynostosis and other comorbidities, grades, and results on national standardized tests (NSTs) across primary and upper secondary school, as well as the presence of academic degrees. The analysis used regression modeling on a sample of N = 1110 individuals with NSC and a matched cohort of N = 10,654 individuals.
