Background: Iron food fortification and oral iron formulations are frequently limited by poor absorption, resulting in the widespread use of high-dose oral iron, which is poorly tolerated.

Methods: We evaluated novel iron-denatured whey protein (Iron-WP) microspheres on reactive oxygen species (ROS) and viability in gut epithelial (HT29) cells. We compared iron absorption from Iron-WP versus equimolar-dose (25 mg elemental iron) ferrous sulphate (FeSO4) in a prospective, randomised, cross-over study in fasting volunteers (n = 21 per group) dependent on relative iron depletion (a ferritin level ≤/>30 ng/mL).

For over a half a century now, microencapsulation has played a very important role in many industries and in the recent decades, this versatile technology has been applied to numerous biotechnology and medical processes. However, successful application in these areas requires a methodology which has the capability to produce mono-dispersed, homogenous-shaped capsules, with a narrow size distribution, using a short production time. The manufacture of capsules using vibrating technology has gained significant interest mainly due to its simplistic approach to produce homogenous microcapsules with the desired characteristics for biotechnological and medical processes.

The molecular complex "Heat shock protein 90" has become a novel target for anticancer drugs in recent times on account of its ability to perform as a chaperone toward proteins involved in cancer progression. The geldanamycin binds to this complex with high affinity and prevents it from performing correctly, which results in tumor destruction. The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of applying liquid-core microcapsules as a novel technique (termed "capsular perstraction"), for the recovery and purification of geldanamycin from culture media.

In recent years ever-increasing amounts of pharmaceuticals are being detected in the aquatic environment and in some cases, they have even been discovered in drinking water. Their presence is attributed mainly to the inability of sewage treatment plants to adequately remove these compounds from the sewage influent. The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility, kinetics and efficiency of using liquid-core microcapsules as a novel methodology, termed capsular perstraction, to remove seven pharmaceuticals commonly found in the environment, from water.

Objectives: This investigational study assessed the suppressive effect of 10 percent povidone iodine (PI) coupled with elimination of active carious lesions on salivary mutans streptococci (MS) populations in children with severe early childhood caries (S-ECC).

Methods: 77 children (38 females, 39 males) were treated for S- ECC in one session; a 0.2 ml PI solution was applied to the dentition after dental surgery was completed and immediately wiped off.

Objective: To investigate the effect of three manual toothbrushes on dental plaque and gingival inflammation.

Methods: The elmex Sensitive Extra Soft (ESES), elmex Sensitive Soft (ESS) and an ADA standard toothbrush (ADAS) were evaluated in a randomized clinical trial. Subjects brushed twice daily in their usual manner.
