Traditional assessment of posttraumatic multiplane deformities of the tibia includes radiographic evaluation with anteroposterior, lateral, and oblique radiographs for assessment of the coronal and sagittal deformities, and scanograms, teleroentgenograms, or orthoroentgenograms for the determination of limb length. Standard clinical measurements are used for the determination of rotational deformity. We report our technique and experience using a selected computerized tomography examination that provides accurate information necessary for the exact determination of the tibial deformity, and the preoperative planning of its correction.

Using resection specimen analysis of the tibial plateau from 100 total knee arthroplasty specimens, the authors have examined the tibial plateau to further delineate, quantitatively, the medial and lateral tibial configuration. Unmagnified radiographs of each of the specimens were produced.

Thromboembolic disease is a potentially fatal complication after high-risk orthopaedic surgery such as total joint arthroplasty and major trauma. Without prophylaxis, pulmonary embolism is known to occur in 1% to 2% of hospitalized patients. Pneumatic foot compression devices have recently been developed to increase lower extremity circulation and, as a result, are effective in thromboembolic disease prophylaxis.

To maximize tibial coverage during total knee arthroplasty, a study was performed to evaluate the morphology of the proximal tibia at the resection level and assess tibial coverage with respect to existing tibial implants. Unmagnified radiographs of 42 tibial resection specimens were produced and digitized with existing tibial implants from the asymmetrical Genesis and the symmetrical Insall-Burstein II and Press Fit Condylar total knee arthroplasty designs. The average total profile coverage ranged from 80.

Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the major psychoactive component in marijuana, and the murine retrovirus, Friend leukemia virus (FLV), have been demonstrated to depress cellular immune function, including lymphocyte blastogenic transformation and natural killer cell activity. The present study demonstrates tht the two agents can work in concert to depress these immune activities more severely than either agent administered by itself. When 7.

Although both centrally-acting analgesics (morphine, clonidine) and prostaglandin biosynthesis inhibitors (aspirin, indomethacin, ibuprofen) blocked the writhing response to intraperitoneal injection of zymosan, only the latter reduced prostaglandin levels in the peritoneal cavity.

Neutrophils began to appear in the peritoneal cavity after a lag period of approximately 3 hours. The injected mice exhibited a pain response (writhing) during the first 30 minutes after injection, but writhing ceased before protein or cell accumulation had reached maximum levels.
