Aim: To assess whether the fluoride concentration in the humeri of first-lactation, 2-year-old dairy cows with a spontaneous humeral fracture is significantly different from that of first-lactation, 2-year-old dairy cows without a humeral fracture.

Methods: Two studies were conducted, the first with nine bone samples from 2-year-old, first-calving dairy cows with a humeral fracture (all from the Waikato region) age-matched with seven control bone samples from the Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Manawatū-Whanganui regions. The second study used 26 bone samples from 2-year-old, first-lactation dairy cows with a humeral fracture (from the Otago, Canterbury, Southland, West Coast, Waikato and Manawatū-Whanganui regions) age-matched with 14 control bone samples (all from the Manawatū-Whanganui region or unknown).

Cell and tissue engineering based approaches have garnered significant interest for treating intervertebral disc degeneration and associated low back pain due to the substantial limitations of currently available clinical treatments. Quasi-periodic eruptions (QPEs) are luminous bursts of soft X-rays from the nuclei of galaxies, repeating on timescales of hours to weeks. The mechanism behind these rare systems is uncertain, but most theories involve accretion disks around supermassive black holes (SMBHs) undergoing instabilities or interacting with a stellar object in a close orbit. It has been suggested that this disk could be created when the SMBH disrupts a passing star, implying that many QPEs should be preceded by observable tidal disruption events (TDEs).

Disc degeneration, a leading contributor to LBP, can be characterized by the breakdown of the extracellular matrix of the intervertebral disc (IVD), disc height loss, and inflammation. The inflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) has multiple signaling pathways, including proinflammatory signaling through tumor necrosis factor receptor 1 superfamily, member 1a (TNFR1 or TNFRSF1A), and has been implicated as a primary mediator of disc degeneration.

A multi-method approach integrating data from four independent sources was used to describe some key features of the epidemiology and estimate the herd and within-herd incidence of fractured humeri in New Zealand dairy cattle for the period 2007-2015. The first dataset was from a national case series where cases of humeral fractures in dairy cattle were identified by veterinarians across New Zealand between the 2007/2008 and 2011/2012 lactation seasons. The second dataset was from a pet food company based in the Waikato region, which collated the number of casualty first- and second-lactation cows found to have a fractured humerus post-slaughter in the 2014/2015 lactation season, and the third dataset was a case series conducted by veterinarians employed in a Waikato veterinary business, also from the 2014/2015 lactation season.

A diatom-associated bacterium, designated as strain F10, was isolated from a pure culture of the pennate diatom A3 and has since been used to characterize molecular mechanisms of symbiosis between phytoplankton and bacteria, including interactions using diatom-derived azelaic acid. Its origin from a hypersaline environment, combined with its capacity for quorum sensing, biofilm formation, and potential for dimethylsulfoniopropionate methylation/cleavage, suggest it is within the family . Initial phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence placed this isolate within the genus, but recent genomic and phylogenomic analyses show strain F10 is a separate lineage diverging from the genus .

Between 2013 and 2018, there has been a 71% increase in the number of patients who have required wound care in the NHS and such large numbers has placed a significant burden on healthcare systems. However, there is currently no evidence as to whether medical students are equipped with the necessary skills to deal with an increasing number of wound care related issues that patients present with. A total of 323 medical students across 18 UK medical schools completed an anonymous questionnaire evaluating the wound education received at their medical school, encompassing the volume, content, format and efficacy of teaching.

Paternalism is a frequent source of anxiety and scholarly enquiry within public health. This article examines debate in the UK from the 1950s to the early 1980s about two quintessentially paternalistic laws: those making it compulsory to use a motorcycle helmet, and a car seatbelt. This kind of historical analysis, looking at change over time and the circumstances that prevent or enable such change, draws attention to two significant features: the contingent nature of that which is perceived as paternalistic and therefore objectionable, and the wide range of arguments that can be marshalled for and against.
