The present study investigated social identification with "survivors" versus "victims" following sexual violence and the degree to which this predicted posttraumatic growth versus posttraumatic stress. Participants (= 290) were adult women who had experienced sexual violence. As predicted, cumulative sexual trauma was positively associated with symptoms of posttraumatic stress and posttraumatic growth.

Sexual harassment and other forms of gendered discrimination are social psychological phenomena, yet the psychological impact of sexual harassment has rarely been examined through a model which considers the role of diverse of gender identity (i.e. norms).

Aims: To investigate potential risk factors for long-term (10-year) subjective and objective failure of the retropubic tension-free vaginal tape procedure (TVT).

Methods: Secondary risk analysis was performed using data from a recently published multi-center study that were merged with additional preoperative and operative data individually stored in the Norwegian Female Incontinence Registry (NFIR). Subjective data from 483 women and objective data from 327 women were obtained 10 years after retropubic TVT surgery.

Aims: Non-fluoroscopic imaging (NFI) devices are increasingly used in ablations. The objective was to determine the utility of intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) in ablating paediatric supraventricular tachycardias (SVTs) and assess whether its integrated use with electroanatomic mapping (EAM) resulted in lower radiation exposure than use of EAM alone.

Methods And Results: Prospective, controlled, single-centre study of patients (pts) age ≥10 years, weight ≥35 kg, with SVT and normal cardiac anatomy.

Introduction And Hypothesis: Retropubic tension-free vaginal tape (TVT) was introduced in 1996 as a new and innovative surgical approach in the treatment of stress urinary incontinence (SUI). In this study we evaluate the long-term objective and subjective outcomes in a non-selected patient population 10 years after the retropubic TVT procedure.

Methods: All women (603) operated on with retropubic TVT at four gynecological departments from September 1998 through December 2000 were identified, and those still alive (542) were invited to participate in this population-based prospective study.

Targeting of antigens to antigen presenting cells (APC) results in enhanced antigen presentation and T cell activation. In this paper, we describe a novel targeting reagent denoted "Troy-bodies", namely recombinant antibodies with APC-specific V regions and C regions with integrated T cell epitopes. We have made such antibodies with V regions specific for either IgD or MHC class II, and four different T cell epitopes have been tested.

A major objective in vaccine development is the design of reagents that give strong, specific T cell responses. We have constructed a series of rAb with specificity for MHC class II (I-E). Each has one of four different class II-restricted T cell epitopes genetically introduced into the first C domain of the H chain.

Background: Neutrophils are important mediators of inflammation and may be activated by foreign surfaces in apheresis systems. Because most of the WBCs are returned to the donor, it was investigated whether artificial activation leads to altered donor neutrophil function.

Study Design And Methods: Three apheresis systems (Amicus, Autopheresis-C, and CS-3000; all: Baxter Fenwal) were investigated.

We studied 35 otherwise healthy adults with frequently recurring genital herpes (greater than or equal to 1 episode per month), in a double-blind trial comparing oral acyclovir with placebo capsules for suppression of recurrent infection. The patients were treated for 125 days unless herpes recurred. Among 32 evaluable patients, there were significantly fewer recurrences during acyclovir treatment (4 of 16) than during placebo treatment (16 of 16, P less than 0.

We have observed two cases of human infection with intraerythrocytic protozoa. The organisms appeared to be in the Entopolypoides group, which had not previously been associated with human infection. One patient was asplenic.

Epidemiological procedures can be organised under disaster conditions by means of a simple surveillance system and with few personnel. In the aftermath of the 4 February 1976 earthquake in Guatemala, an information system was organized by which the requisite information for decision-making was obtained with adequate speed and promptness. The initial epidemiologic informution was based on reports collected during the early days on symptoms observed at hospitals and health centers and in localities and villages in the stricken area.

During a 3-year period, 50 cases of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in children less than 5 years old were reported to the Parasitic Disease Drug Service, Center for disease Control. Primary immune deficiency diseses constituted the most frequent underlying diseases in patients less than 1 year old (24/29 cases, 83%), whereas acute lymphatic leukemia was the most common underlying diseases in children 1-4 years old (17/21 cases, 81%). Severe combined immunodeficiency was the most common type of immune deficiency disease (15/25 cases, 60%).

Tuberculosi remains a serious public health problem in the Americas, and it has not declined as rapidly or as much as experts projected it would in the 1940's. Scientific advances in control of the disease over the last three decades have produced effective chemotherapeutic agents, established the immunizing capacity of BCG vaccine, and demonstrated the superior value of bacteriologic diagnosis in symptomatic individuals over mass community x-ray surveys, which are both inefficient and costly. They have also shown that most cases can be treated on an ambulatory basis, obviating the need for the lengthy hospital stays which have heretofore weighed so heavily on budgets.

The relationship between morbidity and physical growth increments was investigated in 716 Guatemalan children ranging in age from 15 days to 7 years. The growth variables investigated were semestral and yearly increments in total body length and weight. The number of days ill with diarrhea, fever, and respiratory illnesses per semester or year was used as an indicator of morbidity.

Latent Pneumocystis carinii infections were exacerbated in 54 adult male Sprague-Dawley rats by administration of alternating subcutaneous doses of hydrocortisone-21-phosphate and of cortisone acetate three times a week, plus 0.5% chlortetracycline in their drinking water, until death or the termination of the experiment at 120 days. Twenty-eight of the rats were also given pentamidine isethionate (4mg/kg) intramuscularly daily for 14 days.
