Biventricular stress cardiomyopathy is one of several known anatomical variants of reversible cardiomyopathies to occur. We present a case of a young patient with recurrent stress cardiomyopathy complicated by cardiogenic shock in the perioperative period. The cardiomyopathy observed was in a patient with neurofibromatosis type I and undiagnosed pheochromocytoma who presented for intervention of hydrocephalus.

Background: Skin cancers requiring nasal resection may be surgically reconstructed and/or prosthetically reconstructed. Singular surgical reconstruction may be ideal for smaller defects in which the nasal bone and cartilaginous portions of the nose are maintained, but surgical reconstruction falls short of providing acceptable aesthetic results for more extensive nasal defects. Prosthetic rehabilitation, or a combination of surgical and prosthetic rehabilitation, is more appropriate for larger defects, but prosthesis retention can be challenging when adhesives are required on adjacent mobile and secreting skin.

Objective: This single blind, crossover design, clinical trial provided a comparative assessment of the oral cleaning of two dental devices as demonstrated through the removal of dental plaque when used according to marketed product-use directions.

Methodology: Twenty-six subjects, both male and female between the ages of 19 and 64 years, completed this two-cell crossover study. Subjects were assessed for whole mouth plaque levels, both before and after use of each of the randomly assigned floss devices, by assessing disclosed plaque using the Modified Turesky Plaque Index.

Several ocular and orbital disorders require surgical intervention that may result in ocular defects. The associated psychological effect of these defects on the patient requires immediate management and rehabilitation intervention by a team of specialists. The role of the maxillofacial prosthodontist in fabricating an ocular prosthesis with acceptable esthetics to restore facial symmetry and normal appearance for the anophthalmic patient becomes essential.

A technique is presented for packing an acrylic resin core and controlling the thickness of an orbital prosthesis with the use of an irreversible hydrocolloid matrix. This technique provides a durable core without damaging the orbital prosthesis mold and permits a controllable thickness and therefore a lighter prosthesis.

A simple technique for producing a mirror image of a cast for sculpting an auricular prosthesis is described. A transparency copy of the cast assist the operator in sculpting the contours of the facial prosthesis.

A hybrid-mold technique is described for fabricating facial prostheses with delicate contours and/or undercuts that require additional support. This quick and simple technique combines several common laboratory materials and protects select areas of the stone mold during prosthesis fabrication. This technique also extends the mold's years of service and the number of prostheses that can be fabricated from the mold.

A simple technique is described for placing and orienting a facial prosthesis with a magnetic holder. This technique involves samarium-cobalt magnets embedded in a silicone prosthesis and counter magnets placed in a holding device.

This paper reports a case in which reconstruction of a midface defect was accomplished by using microvascular surgery with free tissue transfer of the fibula for a 55-year-old man with squamous cell carcinoma in the nasal vestibule and nasal wall. This technique was developed and first used to reconstruct mandibular defects. Using a surgical template during the midface reconstruction can help the surgeon place the graft in a position that will complement the definitive facial prosthesis, as illustrated in this report.

Magnets are often used in silicone facial prostheses for retention. However, these magnets may need to be replaced or repositioned as a result of loss, wear, or poor initial placement. Replacement can be easily accomplished by use of a nylon mesh material and a simple laboratory technique.

A new and effective technique for making and delivering a nasal stent that can be used for surgical, interim, and definitive stents is presented. The materials used are easily obtainable and inexpensive.

A technique for evaluating the acrylic resin core before processing a silicone facial prosthesis is described. The technique involves the use of either irreversible hydrocolloid impression material or silicone to identify thin areas in the pattern. This simple yet effective procedure ensures adequate thickness and strength of the silicone prosthesis, which in turn decreases the amount of chair and laboratory time needed at the delivery appointment.

The CD8 coreceptor interacts with MHC class I molecules through an acidic loop in the MHC alpha 3 domain. Mutations in this region reduced binding between cells expressing mutant HLA molecules and CHO cells transfected with CD8 alpha chain, with mutations at residue 227 having the greatest effects. This study was undertaken to examine the role of the CD8-HLA interaction in the generation of primary and long-term CTLs.

Background: Previously, autologous Burkitt lymphoma-specific cytotoxic T-lymphocytes (CTL) were found to express the gamma and delta T-cell receptor and recognize tumor idiotype in a major histocompatibility complex (MHC) unrestricted fashion.

Methods: In this study, the authors established autologous CTL lines and clones specific for a B-cell follicular lymphoma.

Results: These CTL are tumor specific and inhibited by antiimmunoglobulin monoclonal antibodies, but unlike the Burkitt lymphoma-specific CTL, they are MHC restricted and express the alpha and beta T-cell receptor.
