MRSA Cellulitis with Orbital and Retinal Abscesses Resulting in Lemierre Syndrome Following Eyebrow Piercing.

We describe a case of orbital cellulitis with abscess formation following eyebrow piercing complicated by internal jugular vein thrombosis and subretinal abscesses requiring enucleation with orbital abscess drainage. The popularity of body piercing is increasing and physicians should be familiar with the possibility and management of vision-threatening complications of facial piercing. Following left eyebrow piercing, a 20-year-old female experienced increasing periorbital swelling, erythema, chemosis, orbital pain, decreased vision, and concomitant fever, chills, and rhinorrhea.

Fusobacterium necrophorum Orbital Cellulitis With Intraconal Abscess.

A 19-year-old male presented to the emergency department with progressive right eye proptosis and was subsequently diagnosed with bacterial orbital cellulitis and acute on chronic allergic fungal sinusitis. He experienced brief symptomatic improvement after endoscopic sinus surgery, initiation of antibiotics, and steroid treatment; however, he re-presented five days after discharge with significantly worsened symptoms and no light perception in the right eye. Cultures resulted in Aspergillus and , a rare, aggressive etiology of bacterial orbital cellulitis.

Single-staged Tunneled Forehead Flap for Medial Canthal and Eyelid Reconstruction.

Purpose: The paramedian forehead flap, while initially used for reconstruction of nasal defects, has been adapted for repair of anatomical subunits in the medial canthal and eyelid area. A significant obstacle for utilizing the flap has been the bulky, unsightly vascular pedicle that is maintained between surgical stages. We describe our surgical experience using the tunneled variation in a single stage procedure.

Dexamethasone-Eluting Contact Lens for the Prevention of Postphotorefractive Keratectomy Scar in a New Zealand White Rabbit Model.

Purpose: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of an experimental dexamethasone-eluting contact lens (DCL) for the prevention of postphotorefractive keratectomy (PRK) corneal haze in a New Zealand White (NZW) rabbit model.

Methods: Both eyes of 29 NZW rabbits underwent PRK. The rabbits were randomized to one of the 5 study arms for 4 weeks: tarsorrhaphy only, tarsorrhaphy and bandage contact lens (BCL) replaced weekly, tarsorrhaphy and BCL for 1 week plus topical 0.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumor metastatic to the orbit.

A 53-year-old woman was referred to the authors with a history of left eyelid swelling and retro-orbital pain. She had a history of a prior stomach gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) with metastasis to the liver and intrahepatic bile duct. Examination showed global motility restriction with no relative afferent pupillary defect, and exophthalmometry confirmed 4 mm of left-sided proptosis.

Repair of a Full-thickness Eyelid Defect With a Bilamellar Full-thickness Autograft in a Porcine Model (Sus scrofa).

Purpose: It has been demonstrated the pedicle of a tarsoconjunctival flap advancement does not appear to supply the flap itself and the vascularization of the remaining eyelid/tear film is thought to offer adequate nourishment for survival of the flap; as such, a swine model was constructed to assess the viability of a bilamellar autograft for repair of large full-thickness eyelid defects.

Methods: Full-thickness defects of varying sizes were created in each lower eyelid of 4 Yorkshire/Yorkshire crossed swine. The defects were then closed with a full-thickness ipsilateral graft from the upper eyelid.

Evisceration Versus Enucleation Following Ocular Trauma, a Retrospective Analysis at a Level One Trauma Center.

Introduction: Penetrating and perforating ocular trauma is often devastating and may lead to complete visual loss in the traumatized eye and subsequent compromise of the fellow eye. Enucleation is commonly utilized for management of a non-salvageable eye following penetrating and perforating ocular injuries. Recently, the use of evisceration for non-salvageable traumatized eyes has increased.

Open globe trauma in a military hospital: a review of the Ocular Trauma Score to help predict enucleation or evisceration.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to use the Ocular Trauma Score (OTS) to review and analyze all the open globe injuries (OGIs) that presented to Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) from July 2011 to March 2017, and whether or not the OTS can be used to predict enucleation or evisceration.

Methods: Retrospective chart review was performed through the medical record systems at BAMC for all OGIs from July 2011 to March 2017. This study was not performed on wartime patients.
