Article Synopsis
  • Porokeratosis is a skin condition marked by the development of benign plaques, featuring a distinctive raised ridge and a flat center, which can lead to squamous cell carcinoma if untreated.
  • The condition is mostly found on extremities, with rare occurrences on the lip, as highlighted by the report of three cases involving lip lesions.
  • Treatment options included cryotherapy, which failed in two patients, while one patient was successfully treated with a shave biopsy, and another was lost to follow-up.

Objective: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is an inflammatory skin condition affecting both mental and physical health. Although research has shown reduced physical activity levels among patients with AD, there is a scarcity of studies examining baseline mobility, which refers to the standard level of functional ambulation or movement capability. We analyzed the relationship between AD and baseline mobility among U.

Objectives: Otitis media with effusion (OME) is common, affecting up to 90% of children. Around 25% will have a persistent effusion with conductive hearing loss which can impact their development. Ventilation tubes (VTs) can improve their hearing in the short term.

Nevoid basal-cell carcinoma syndrome (Gorlin syndrome) is characterized by numerous cutaneous basal cell carcinomas mediated by mutations in the hedgehog pathway. Vismodegib or sonidegib represent promising treatment options. We identified 10 Gorlin patients who were treated with sonidegib ( = 6) or vismodegib ( = 4) between March 2012 and March 2022.

Introduction: This study aimed to determine if post-treatment HPV cell-free DNA (cfDNA) can assist in the decision-making process for salvage neck dissection in patients following non-surgical treatment of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) with a partial response in the neck on imaging at 12 weeks post-treatment.

Methods: 86 patients who completed treatment were prospectively recruited through the regional multidisciplinary team (MDT). Treatment response was categorised as complete response (CR), partial response (PR) or progressive disease on 12-week post-treatment imaging.

Article Synopsis
  • Oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) is increasingly common and can be linked to human papillomavirus (HPV), with a new method using cell-free DNA (cfDNA) in plasma showing promise for detecting and monitoring this cancer.
  • A study involving 104 OPSCC patients demonstrated that droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) of cfDNA had a 95% agreement with standard tissue tests and was effective for tracking patient outcomes over time, especially in HPV-positive patients.
  • The results indicate that elevated cfDNA-HPV levels after treatment can predict treatment failure and recurrence, suggesting that cfDNA-HPV testing could improve clinical management of OPSCC, but further clinical trials are needed to confirm its

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the use of 3D-printed custom implants for patients with severe acetabular defects designated as "un-reconstructable" by other hospitals, focusing on the importance of understanding bony defects for successful hip revision surgery.
  • Out of 26 patients analyzed, 31% underwent two-stage revision surgery due to complications like infection and significant metal artefacts affecting their CT scans, which altered the assessment of bone structure.
  • The findings suggest that CT data used for 3D implant design can be impacted by metal artefacts and bone removal, prompting a recommendation for two-stage surgeries to improve the fitting of complex implants.

Background: FluoroSim, a novel fluoroscopic simulator, can be used to practice dynamic hip screw (DHS) guidewire insertion in a high-fidelity clinical scenario. Our aim was to demonstrate a training effect in undergraduate medical students who are not familiar with this operation and its simulation.

Methods: Forty-five undergraduate medical students were recruited and randomized to either training (n = 23) or control (n = 22) cohorts.

Background and purpose - Simulation is an adjunct to surgical education. However, nothing can accurately simulate fluoroscopic procedures in orthopedic trauma. Current options for training with fluoroscopy are either intraoperative, which risks radiation, or use of expensive and unrealistic virtual reality simulators.

Background: Hip fractures contribute to a significant clinical burden globally with over 1.6 million cases per annum and up to 30% mortality rate within the first year. Insertion of a dynamic hip screw (DHS) is a frequently performed procedure to treat extracapsular neck of femur fractures.

Objectives: We developed a data collection and monitoring system to independently evaluate the self-regulatory effort to reduce the number of beverage calories available to children during the regular and extended school day. We have described the data collection procedures used to verify data supplied by the beverage industry and quantified changes in school beverage shipments.

Methods: Using a proprietary industry data set collected in 2005 and semiannually in 2007 through 2010, we measured the total volume of beverage shipments to elementary, middle, and high schools to monitor intertemporal changes in beverage volumes, the composition of products delivered to schools, and portion sizes.

The effects of Red Bull Energy Drink, which includes taurine, glucuronolactone, and caffeine amongst the ingredients, were examined over 3 studies in a total of 36 volunteers. Assessments included psychomotor performance (reaction time, concentration, memory), subjective alertness and physical endurance. When compared with control drinks, Red Bull Energy Drink significantly (P < 0.

Data from slaughter plants (n = 3) and feedlots (n = 18) in eastern Washington were analyzed to characterize occurrence patterns of cysticercosis in Washington during 1984. Three concurrent peaks in cysticercosis rates (0.6/1,000 to 5/1,000 slaughtered cattle) were detected at 3 slaughter plants.

The association of Eperythrozoon coccoides infection in laboratory mice, with commonly encountered external parasites, was examined. Transmission of E. coccoides was achieved by infesting recipient mice with as few as 10 live Polyplax serrata immediately after they were obtained from donor mice infected with E.

The anthelmintic activity of thiabendazole (TBZ) at 88 mg kg-1 and ivermectin at 0.2 mg kg-1 was examined in goats with naturally-acquired nematode infections. In one experiment, a herd of 450 does was treated with TBZ or ivermectin at 4-week intervals for 9 months and efficacy was measured by reduction in faecal egg counts after each treatment.

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate lasalocid as a coccidiostat in Holstein calves and to compare lasalocid with monensin and decoquinate. In experiment 1, calves in 3 groups (6 calves/group) were each inoculated with 500,000 sporulated oocysts, 88% of which were Eimeria bovis and 12% were E zuernii. Calves in each group were given lasalocid-medicated feed at 0.

Anthelmintics and drug resistance.

Vet Clin North Am Equine Pract

August 1986

Equine anthelmintics and the resistance of nematode parasites to anthelmintics are reviewed. Recommendations are made for effective treatment of these parasites and for procedures that can be performed to minimize the problem in the future.
