The current research explored the influences of role-playing video games (RPGs) on the development of gender identity among transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNC) individuals. In Study 1 ( = 10), we used a Consensual Qualitative Research approach to interview TGNC individuals and identify common themes regarding the perceived impact of RPGs on gender identity development. TGNC individuals highlighted the influence of character customization, exploration, and the function of RPGs as safe spaces.

Transition metal trichalcogenphosphites (MPX), belonging to the class of 2D materials, are potentially viable electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Many 2D and layered materials exhibit different magnitudes of electrochemical and electrocatalytic activity at their edge and basal sites. Flow reactors are of increasing importance and have become crucial devices due to their wide application in chemical synthesis, electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), or electrochemical waste water treatment. In many of these applications, catalyst materials such as transition-metal chalcogenides (TMCs) for the HER, provide the desired electrochemical reactivity for the HER. Background: Immunofluorescent confocal microscopy uses labeled antibodies as probes against specific macromolecules to discriminate between multiple cell types. For images of the developmental mouse lung, these cells are themselves organized into densely packed higher-level anatomical structures. These types of images can be challenging to segment automatically for several reasons, including the relevance of biomedical context, dependence on the specific set of probes used, prohibitive cost of generating labeled training data, as well as the complexity and dense packing of anatomical structures in the image.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is more common in women than in men, and evidence of gender-related subtypes of depression is emerging. Previously identified blood-based transcriptomic biomarkers distinguished male and female subjects with MDD from those without the disorder. Alveolar Type II cells from seven mammalian species were examined for a protein in the rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER), which showed a multilayered, repeating motif. Each motif, 100 nm in width, comprised two parallel outer dense layers, a less dense central layer, and often 1-3 faint layers on either side of the latter. Outer layers showed periodicities at 3-4 densities/100 nm of width, while layers on either side of the central layer showed 5-7 densities/100 nm of width.

Acute stress responsiveness is a quantitative trait that varies in severity from one individual to another; however, the genetic component underlying the individual variation is largely unknown. Fischer 344 (F344) and Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rat strains show large differences in behavioral responsiveness to acute stress, such as freezing behavior in response to footshock during the conditioning phase of contextual fear conditioning (CFC). In this study, we sought to learn whether adverse events such as chronic restraint stress (CRS), or 'nurture' in the form of environmental enrichment (EE), could modify depression-like behavior and blood biomarker transcript levels in a genetic rat model of depression. The Wistar Kyoto More Immobile (WMI) is a genetic model of depression that aided in the identification of blood transcriptomic markers, which successfully distinguished adolescent and adult subjects with major depressive disorders from their matched no-disorder controls. Here, we followed the effects of CRS and EE in adult male WMIs and their genetically similar control strain, the Wistar Kyoto Less Immobile (WLI), that does not show depression-like behavior, by measuring the levels of these transcripts in the blood and hippocampus.

Advances in physiology and biochemistry have provided fundamental insights into the role of pulmonary surfactant in the pathogenesis and treatment of preterm infants with respiratory distress syndrome. Identification of the surfactant proteins, lipid transporters, and transcriptional networks regulating their expression has provided the tools and insights needed to discern the molecular and cellular processes regulating the production and function of pulmonary surfactant prior to and after birth. Mutations in genes regulating surfactant homeostasis have been associated with severe lung disease in neonates and older infants.
