Background: gamma-Aminobutyric acid type A receptors (GABA(A)-Rs) have been implicated in mediating some of the behavioral effects of ethanol (EtOH), but the contribution of specific GABA(A)-R subunits is not yet fully understood. The GABA(A)-R alpha 4 subunit often partners with beta2/3 and delta subunits to form extrasynaptic GABA(A)-Rs that mediate tonic inhibition. Several in vitro studies have suggested that these extrasynaptic GABA(A)-Rs may be particularly relevant to the intoxicating effects of low doses of EtOH.

Pesticide formulators formerly operating at Lauritzen Channel, a portion of San Francisco Bay near Richmond (CA, USA), caused contamination of sediment with dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT). The present study evaluated the distribution of residual DDT in channel sediment six years following extensive remedial dredging. High DDT concentrations (up to 252 mg/ kg) were found in Young Bay Mud sampled across the channel.

Food irradiation has been considered as a safe processing technology to improve food safety and preservation, eliminating efficiently bacterial pathogens, parasites and insects. This study aims to characterize the toxicological potential of 2-alkylcyclobutanones (2-ACBs), radiolytic derivatives of triglycerides, formed uniquely upon irradiation of fat-containing food. In irradiated food they are generated proportionally to fat content and absorbed radiation dose.

Low-index metamaterial designs in the visible spectrum that are impedance matched to free space are presented. The unit cell of the periodic metamaterial design incorporates a magnetic resonator and silver meshes for respective control of the effective permeability and permittivity. A genetic algorithm is employed to optimize the metamaterial design to achieve a desired set of values for the index of refraction and the intrinsic impedance.

We present a draft sequence of the genome of Aedes aegypti, the primary vector for yellow fever and dengue fever, which at approximately 1376 million base pairs is about 5 times the size of the genome of the malaria vector Anopheles gambiae. Enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP) is a noninvasive counterpulsation technique that reduces angina and improves exercise capacity in patients with coronary artery disease. Near-infrared metamaterials that possess a reconfigurable index of refraction from negative through zero to positive values are presented. Reconfigurability is achieved by cladding thin layers of liquid crystal both as a superstrate and a substrate on an established negative-index metamaterial, and adjusting the permittivity of the liquid crystal. Numerical results show that the index of refraction for the proposed structure can be changed over the range from ?1 to +1.

Dual-band negative-index metamaterial designs in the near-infrared frequency range are presented and their performance is analyzed using a full-wave numerical electromagnetic scattering method. Negative effective permittivity is provided by a thin layer of metallic film. Negative effective permeabilities are supplied in two distinct frequency bands by magnetic resonators of different dimensions.

A highly effective one-pot Friedländer quinoline synthesis using inexpensive reagents has been developed. o-Nitroarylcarbaldehydes were reduced to o-aminoarylcarbaldehydes with iron in the presence of catalytic HCl (aq.) and subsequently condensed in situ with aldehydes or ketones to form mono- or di-substituted quinolines in high yields (66-100%).

A 42 year-old female, admitted to the ICU, with Addisonian crisis developed acute cardiopulmonary failure after hydrocortisone therapy was initiated. An echocardiogram showed severe reduction in the left-ventricular ejection fraction. Additionally, profound ECG abnormalities with diffuse ST-elevation and decreased QRS-amplitudes occurred, whereas Troponin-I was only moderately increased.

The neurotransmitter GABA mediates the majority of rapid inhibition in the CNS. Inhibition can occur via the conventional mechanism, the transient activation of subsynaptic GABAA receptors (GABAA-Rs), or via continuous activation of high-affinity receptors by low concentrations of ambient GABA, leading to "tonic" inhibition that can control levels of excitability and network activity. The GABAA-R alpha4 subunit is expressed at high levels in the dentate gyrus and thalamus and is suspected to contribute to extrasynaptic GABAA-R-mediated tonic inhibition.
