Importance: Tonsillectomy is one of the most common surgical procedures performed in the United States. However, there is little known about the intersectionality of race, ethnicity, and language and how these factors influence post-tonsillectomy outcomes such as ED utilization and hospital readmission rates.

Objective: To examine disparities in emergency department (ED) utilization and hospital readmissions for post-tonsillectomy complications based on insurance status, patient race, ethnicity and language spoken.

Extrapulmonary manifestations of asthma, including fatty infiltration in tissues, may reflect systemic inflammation and influence lung function and disease severity. To determine if skeletal muscle adiposity predicts lung function trajectory in asthma. Adult SARP III (Severe Asthma Research Program III) participants with baseline computed tomography imaging and longitudinal postbronchodilator FEV% predicted (median follow-up 5 years [1,132 person-years]) were evaluated.

Divergent natural selection caused by differences in solar exposure has resulted in distinctive variations in skin color between human populations. The derived light skin color allele of the SLC24A5 gene, A111T, predominates in populations of Western Eurasian ancestry. To gain insight into when and where this mutation arose, we defined common haplotypes in the genomic region around SLC24A5 across diverse human populations and deduced phylogenetic relationships between them.

Renal oncocytomas are the most common benign solid renal tumor, accounting for 3-7% of renal neoplasms. Oncocytomas are multifocal in 2-12% and bilateral in 4-14% of cases. Multifocal bilateral oncocytomas represent only 1.

A major challenge in personalized medicine is the lack of a standard way to define the functional significance of the numerous nonsynonymous, single nucleotide coding variants that are present in each human individual. To begin to address this problem, we have used pigmentation as a model polygenic trait, three common human polymorphisms thought to influence pigmentation, and the zebrafish as a model system. The approach is based on the rescue of embryonic zebrafish mutant phenotypes by "humanized" zebrafish orthologous mRNA.

The sternohyoid (SH) and geniohyoid (GH) are antagonist strap muscles that are active during a number of different behaviors, including sucking, intraoral transport, swallowing, breathing, and extension/flexion of the neck. Because these muscles have served different functions through the evolutionary history of vertebrates, it is quite likely they will have complex patterns of electrical activity and muscle fiber contraction. Different regions of the SH exhibit different contraction and activity patterns during a swallow.

A rare case of a male neonate with complete duplication of the bladder, urethra and external genitalia with associated anomalies is reported. In addition to the above, the patient had a hypoplastic left kidney, bilateral bifid scrotums (four hemi-scrotums), an imperforate anus and a mass on the perineum.

Computer-generated near-field holograms are well suited to display numerical data in three-dimensional pictorial form. The available computer capacity and recording facility frequently limit the attainable space-bandwidth product. An optical technique that can improve it and provide comfortable viewing conditions is presented.

This study was designed to characterize neutrophil chemotactic factors released by gastric tissue. Full-thickness rabbit stomach (organ culture) was prepared and incubated in Ringer's solution at 37 degrees C. Culture supernatants were collected at 1, 2, 3, and 4 hr and assayed for neutrophil chemotactic activity in modified Boyden chambers.

trans-3,3'-Bis[alpha-(trimethylammonio)methyl]azobenzene bromide (BisQ) is a potent agonist of the acetylcholine receptor (AcChoR) of Electrophorus electricus. BisQ is highly constrained, suggesting that its structure is complementary to the combining site of the AcChoR when the latter is in its activated state. Antibodies produced in rabbits to a conjugate of bovine serum albumin and a derivative of BisQ mimicked the binding characteristics of the AcChoR with respect to the order of binding of a variety of agonists and to the preferred recognition of decamethonium ion (an agonist) over hexamethonium ion (an antagonist).
