An imbalance in iron homeostasis contributes to mitochondrial dysfunction, which is closely linked to the pathogenesis of various diseases. Herein, we developed a nanosensor for detecting mitochondrial ferrous ions in vitro and in vivo. A poly(N-isopropylacrylamine)-coacrylic acid nanohydrogel was synthesized, and ferrous ions were detected using the fluorescent probe FeRhonox-1 embedded within it.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the potential of sarsasapogenin (SAR) to promote bone and blood vessel formation in postmenopausal osteoporosis, which is linked to estrogen deficiency and ferroptosis.
  • SAR shows promise in enhancing cell survival and bone development while reducing cell death in tests with stem cells and blood vessel cells.
  • Results indicate that SAR activates a signaling pathway involving SLIT3 and ROBO1, which is crucial for coupling bone growth and blood vessel formation, with GPX4 playing a key role in this process.

Article Synopsis
  • Ferroptosis is a significant factor in postmenopausal osteoporosis, and the traditional Chinese herb pair Bunge/C.K. Schneid (AA/PC) may help treat it, though its mechanisms are not well understood.
  • Researchers used various methods, including serum pharmacochemistry and a mouse model, to investigate how AA/PC affects osteoporosis and its related mechanisms.
  • Results showed that AA/PC improved bone density better than either herb alone and regulated important biological pathways related to ferroptosis, suggesting that it could be an effective treatment for postmenopausal osteoporosis.

With the rising demand for implantable orthopaedic medical devices and the dominance of device-associated infections, extensive research into the development of novel materials has been prompted. Among these, new-generation titanium alloys with biocompatible elements and improved stiffness levels have received much attention. Furthermore, the development of titanium-based materials that can impart antibacterial function has demonstrated promising results, where gallium has exhibited superior antimicrobial action.

The present study investigated the effect of puerarin on promoting the osteogenesis in steroid-induced necrosis of the femoral head (SONFH). New Zealand rabbits were administrated with horse serum and methylprednisolone (MPS) for establishing SONFH in vivo model, which was then treated with puerarin treatment. Histo-morphological changes in the femoral head were examined by hematoxylin-eosin staining.

Ethanamizuril is a novel triazine compound that exhibits remarkable anticoccidial activity. Owing to its pharmacological properties, this study was conducted to evaluate the acute and 30-day oral toxicity of ethanamizuril. In the acute study, ethanamizuril was administered once by oral gavage to mice and rats.

New generation titanium alloys with low elastic moduli are promising materials for medical implants, particularly load-bearing orthopaedic implants. In this paper, the effect of niobium content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of new Ti alloys including Ti-23Nb-7Zr, Ti-28Nb-7Zr and Ti-33Nb-7Zr (wt%) is studied. Ti-23Nb-7Zr was found to mainly form α΄ and α″- phases, while both the Ti-28Nb-7Zr and Ti-33Nb-7Zr consisted of α″ and β-phases with an increased amount of β-phase in the alloy with 33 wt% of Nb.

Estradiol (E2) is a first‑line drug for osteoporosis (OP) treatment via promotion of osteoblastic proliferation and differentiation. However, a long‑term use of E2 would produce side effects thus, it is imperative to discover safer and more effective drugs. Pinoresinol (PINO) has a similar chemical structure to E2.

The precipitation behavior of the α strengthening phase in metastable β-Ti alloys is highly dependent on heat treatment parameters such as quenching rate, heating rate and ageing temperature. In this paper we have investigated the influence of quenching rate on the formation of isothermal ω precipitates that have been regarded as potent nucleant sites for α precipitation. The results show that the β-solutionized alloy contains a β matrix with a layer structured morphology.

Article Synopsis
  • The first confirmed case of the H7N9 virus in Guangdong Province, China, occurred in August 2013, outside the usual flu season, prompting an investigation into its source and transmission.
  • A female patient with poultry exposure experienced severe respiratory symptoms and quickly moved to an ICU but ultimately recovered after four weeks, with no additional cases reported.
  • Genetic analysis showed the virus shares similarities with other H7N9 strains and is susceptible to certain antiviral medications, highlighting a potential ongoing risk for H7N9 re-emergence in China, especially from environmental sources.

Mg-Y-based microwire which offers high strength in combination of low degradation rate has been prepared for the first time by a modified melt extraction technique. A circular Mg-Y-based microwire is achieved with an extraction rate of 40m/s, which is composed of Mg matrix and an amorphous phase, and exhibits higher basal texture than that of as-cast sample. The outstanding tensile strength accompanying with an acceptable elongation is obtained with an extraction rate of 40m/s.
