Objective: The results of published studies which examined the association between variable number tandem repeat (VNTR) polymorphism of interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1RN) and ischemic stroke (IS) are conflicting. Thus, we performed a meta-analysis to examine the potential association between IL-1RN VNTR polymorphism and IS risk.

Pairwise Constraint Propagation-Induced Symmetric Nonnegative Matrix Factorization.

As a variant of nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF), symmetric NMF (SNMF) has shown to be effective for capturing the cluster structure embedded in the graph representation. In contrast to the existing SNMF-based clustering methods that empirically construct the similarity matrix and rigidly introduce the supervisory information to the assignment matrix, in this paper, we propose a novel SNMF-based semisupervised clustering method, namely, pairwise constraint propagation-induced SNMF (PCPSNMF). By formulating a single-constrained optimization problem, PCPSNMF is capable of learning the similarity and assignment matrices adaptively and simultaneously, in which a small amount of supervisory information in the form of pairwise constraints is introduced in a flexible way to guide the construction of the similarity matrix, and the two matrices communicate with each other to achieve mutual refinement until convergence.

Sparse Bayesian Learning-Based Kernel Poisson Regression.

In this paper, we introduce a closed-form sparse Bayesian kernel Poisson regression (SBKPR) model for count data regression problems based on the sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) approach. In Bayesian setting, a Gaussian prior is given to the model parameter, which is not the conjugate distribution of Poisson regression. Hence, the model parameters cannot be integrated analytically, which leads to the inference intractable problem.

Fluid percussion (FP) injury model is a popular animal model of traumatic brain injury (TBI), but still there are some issues need to be addressed. To increase the validity and reliability of this technique, we adapted the FP device using electromagnetic protractor, stainless-steel cylinder, changing pressure transducer position, and foam pads to adjust the parameters of FP pulse. Besides, the adjusted FP device is more automatic.

Analysis and Evaluation of the Characteristic Taste Components in Portobello Mushroom.

Unlabelled: To identify the characteristic taste components of the common cultivated mushroom (brown; Portobello), Agaricus bisporus, taste components in the stipe and pileus of Portobello mushroom harvested at different growth stages were extracted and identified, and principal component analysis (PCA) and taste active value (TAV) were used to reveal the characteristic taste components during the each of the growth stages of Portobello mushroom. In the stipe and pileus, 20 and 14 different principal taste components were identified, respectively, and they were considered as the principal taste components of Portobello mushroom fruit bodies, which included most amino acids and 5'-nucleotides. Some taste components that were found at high levels, such as lactic acid and citric acid, were not detected as Portobello mushroom principal taste components through PCA.

The association of sex hormone (estradiol, testosterone, and progesterone) with cardiopulmonary disease has already attracted great attention, especially in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). However, the impact of sex hormones and their pituitary stimulators (follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone) on PAH in men remains unclear. We conducted a prospective cohort study recruiting 95 patients with idiopathic PAH from 2008 to 2014 and following up for a median of 65 months for death.

Enterovirus (EV)-A71 and Coxsackievirus (CV)-A16 have historically been the major pathogens of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HMFD) in China; however, CV-A6， which had previously received little attention, became the predominant pathogen in 2013, and has remained one of the common pathogens since then. In this work, we conducted a molecular epidemiology study of CV-A6-associated HFMD in Xiamen from 2009 to 2015. The data showed CV-A6 pandemics had a certain periodicity rather than occurring randomly.

Association of prenatal organochlorine pesticide-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane exposure with fetal genome-wide DNA methylation.

Aims: To investigate whether intrauterine organochlorine pesticide (OCP)-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) exposure could lead to epigenetic alterations by DNA methylation with possible important lifetime health consequences for offspring.

Main Methods: We used Illumina Infinium HumanMethylation 450 K BeadChip to explore the pattern of genome-wide DNA methylation containing >485,000 gene sites in cord blood of 24 subjects in a 12 mother-newborn pairs birth cohort. Based on the genome-wide DNA methylation data, we chose one potential gene, BRCA1, to verify the results in another group comprising 126 subjects.

Background: Sex differences in chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) have been revealed in few studies. Although right heart catheterization (RHC) is the gold standard for clinical diagnosis and assessment of prognosis in pulmonary hypertension (PH), cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) has been a more widely used assessment of functional capacity, disease severity, prognosis, and treatment response in PH. Analogy optical devices (AODs) able to do mathematical computations have recently gained strong research interest for their potential applications as accelerating hardware in traditional electronic computers. In this Letter, we show that the multilayer technique could be a promising method to flexibly design AODs according to the input wavefront conditions.

Hemodynamic and gas exchange effects of inhaled iloprost in patients with COPD and pulmonary hypertension.

Studies have shown that vasodilators such as iloprost can be useful for treating pulmonary hypertension (PH). However, in patients with COPD, vasodilators may inhibit hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction and impair gas exchange. The efficacy and safety of iloprost inhalation was assessed in 67 patients with PH associated with COPD (COPD-PH), diagnosed by right heart catheterization.

Targeting the MYCN-PARP-DNA Damage Response Pathway in Neuroendocrine Prostate Cancer.

We investigated MYCN-regulated molecular pathways in castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) classified by morphologic criteria as adenocarcinoma or neuroendocrine to extend the molecular phenotype, establish driver pathways, and identify novel approaches to combination therapy for neuroendocrine prostate cancer (NEPC). Using comparative bioinformatics analyses of CRPC-Adeno and CRPC-Neuro RNA sequence data from public data sets and a panel of 28 PDX models, we identified a MYCN-PARP-DNA damage response (DDR) pathway that is enriched in CRPC with neuroendocrine differentiation (NED) and CRPC-Neuro. ChIP-PCR assay revealed that N-MYC transcriptionally activates PARP1, PARP2, BRCA1, RMI2, and TOPBP1 through binding to the promoters of these genes.

Penguin guano provides favorable conditions for production and emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs). Many studies have been conducted to determine the GHG fluxes from penguin colonies, however, at regional scale, there is still no accurate estimation of total GHG emissions. We used object-based image analysis (OBIA) method to estimate the Adélie penguin (Pygoscelis adeliae) population based on aerial photography data.
