Background: Despite widespread access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) in the "Treat All" era, HIV-associated Kaposi sarcoma (KS) remains among the most common malignancies in sub-Saharan Africa. Survival after KS diagnosis has historically been poor in Africa, but knowledge whether survival has changed at the population level in the contemporary era has been limited by lack of community-representative surveillance and monitoring systems.

Methods: We identified all adult persons living with HIV (PLWH) with a new diagnosis of KS made between 2016 and 2019 during outpatient or inpatient care at prototypical primary care-providing medical facilities in Kenya and Uganda using rapid case ascertainment.

People can use their sense of hearing for discerning thermal properties, though they are for the most part unaware that they can do so. While people unequivocally claim that they cannot perceive the temperature of pouring water through the auditory properties of hearing it being poured, our research further strengthens the understanding that they can. This multimodal ability is implicitly acquired in humans, likely through perceptual learning over the lifetime of exposure to the differences in the physical attributes of pouring water.

Objectives: Animal studies have suggested that dietary iron deficiency (ID) negatively affects dopamine (DA) synthesis and re-uptake, which in turn negatively affects memory and cognition. This study was intended to assess whether the pattern electroretinogram (pattern ERG) could be used as an indirect measure of DA in college-age women with and without ID by determining the extent to which features of the ERG were sensitive to iron status and were related to other indirect measures of DA.

This effect can depend on vision or visual imagery, or alternatively, could be driven by mechanisms independent of visual experience. Continuous multi-column chromatography (CMCC) has been successfully implemented to address biopharmaceutical biomolecule instability, to improve process efficiency, and to reduce facility footprint and capital cost. This paper explores the implementation of a continuous multi-membrane chromatography (CMMC) process, using four membrane units, for a large viral particle in just few weeks. CMMC improves the efficiency of the chromatography step by enabling higher loads with smaller membranes for multiple cycles of column use and enables steady-state continuous bioprocessing.

A substantial body of research focuses on racial disparity in the criminal justice system, with mixed results due to difficulty in disentangling differential offending from racial bias. Additionally, some research has demonstrated that victim characteristics can exacerbate racial disparity in outcomes for offenders, but little research has focused on the arrest stage. We use a quasi-experimental approach that examines incidents involving co-offending pairs to isolate the influence of offender race on arrest, beyond any characteristics of the incident itself, and we test for moderating effects of victim race and sex on racial disparities in arrest.

Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is an endothelial cancer caused by the Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) and is one of the most common cancers in sub-Saharan Africa. In limited-resource settings, traditional pathology infrastructure is often insufficient for timely diagnosis, leading to frequent diagnoses at advanced-stage disease where survival is poor. In this study, we investigate molecular diagnosis of KS performed in a point-of-care device to circumvent the limited infrastructure for traditional diagnosis.
