Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell lines are used to express a variety of therapeutic proteins. However, lactogenic behavior displayed by some CHO cell lines during manufacturing processes may result in a decline in viability, productivity, and possible alterations in product quality. In cultured cells, lactate is produced during glycolysis through irreversible conversion of phosphoenolpyruvate to pyruvate and then lactate via sequential function of pyruvate kinase and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) enzymes.

Rodents and other small wild mammals are often considered to be pests and vectors for disease in zoos that house small populations of valuable threatened and endangered animals. In 2005, three nonhuman primates at a drive-through zoo in Oregon, US, acquired tularemia from an unknown source. Due to an abundance of California ground squirrels ( Spermophilus beecheyi ) on zoo grounds, we instituted serosurveillance of this species from July through September 2008 to determine the prevalence of antibodies against pathogens considered to be potentially transmissible to collection animals.

In the biopharmaceutical industry, a clonally derived cell line is typically used to generate material for investigational new drug (IND)-enabling toxicology studies. The same cell line is then used to generate material for clinical studies. If a pool of clones can be used to produce material for IND-enabling toxicology studies (Pool for Tox (PFT) strategy) during the time a lead clone is being selected for clinical material production, the toxicology studies can be accelerated significantly (approximately 4 months at Genentech), leading to a potential acceleration of 4 months for the IND submission.

Rationale: Approximately 150-250 migrants die each year while attempting to cross the border from Mexico to the Southwest United States. Many border crossers survive the journey, but some develop life-threatening medical complications. Such complications have been subject to little formal analysis.

Background: The purpose of this study was to determine the preoperative accuracy of preservation of the retropharyngeal fat plane on magnetic resonance (MR) images in predicting the absence of fixation or extension of head and neck carcinomas to the prevertebral space.

Methods: The MR images of 75 patients with T3 or T4 primary pharyngeal or laryngeal cancers seen over a 5-year period and treated at our Head and Neck Cancer Center were retrospectively reviewed. The MR images were independently and blindly evaluated by two head and neck radiologists for preservation of the retropharyngeal fat plane between the tumor and prevertebral musculature.

Background And Purpose: In young adults, hematopoietic bone marrow has usually converted to fatty marrow. Fat hyperintensity on T1-weighted MR images facilitates the evaluation of marrow abnormalities. Our purpose was to compare cranial marrow signal intensity patterns in adults with systemic disorders and in healthy subjects.
