The association of social determinants of health with oral health status among patients of health resources and services administration funded health centers in the United States.

Objectives: This study examined the association of social determinants of health (SDOH) domains on oral health status.

Methods: We used the nationally representative 2022 Health Center Patient Survey and the 2021-2022 Area Health Resource File. We constructed seven domains on burden of SDOH disadvantage: (1) oral health behavior, (2) dental service use and access, (3) general health service use and access, (4) social, (5) economic, (6) contextual or physical environment, and (7) health condition indicators, and calculated a score per domain.

Fatty Acid Synthase-Derived Lipid Stores Support Breast Cancer Metastasis.

Lipid accumulation is associated with breast cancer metastasis. However, the mechanisms underlying how breast cancer cells increase lipid stores and their functional role in disease progression remain incompletely understood. Herein we quantified changes in lipid metabolism and characterized cytoplasmic lipid droplets in metastatic versus non-metastatic breast cancer cells.

The Importance of Patient Experience in Obtaining Mental Health Care at HRSA-Funded Health Centers.

Timely mental health care prevents more complex and costly psychological problems, particularly for underserved individuals utilizing HRSA-funded health centers. Patient experience with care services and provider interactions may facilitate timely mental health care access. This study explored which elements of patient experience at health centers minimize delayed access to necessary mental health care.

Structure-Based Design of Bicyclic Helical Peptides That Target the Oncogene β-Catenin.

The inhibition of intracellular protein-protein interactions is challenging, in particular, when involved interfaces lack pronounced cavities. The transcriptional co-activator protein and oncogene β-catenin is a prime example of such a challenging target. Despite extensive targeting efforts, available high-affinity binders comprise only large molecular weight inhibitors.

Influences on the Decision to Euthanize a Compromised Pig.

The decision to euthanize a compromised pig can be challenging for pig farmers and veterinarians. To understand more about the challenges in Germany, a cross-sectional online survey was conducted. Based on a hybrid design, the responses of 39 veterinarians and 62 pig farmers were analyzed to generate a list of common clinical signs associated with the euthanasia of sows, fatteners, and piglets.

Fibroblast growth receptor 1 is regulated by G-quadruplex in metastatic breast cancer.

Limiting cellular plasticity is of key importance for the therapeutic targeting of metastatic breast cancer (MBC). Fibroblast growth receptor (FGFR) is a critical molecule in cellular plasticity and potent inhibitors of FGFR enzymatic activity have been developed, but kinase independent functions for this receptor also contribute to MBC progression. Herein, we evaluated several FGFR inhibitors and find that while FGFR-targeted kinase inhibitors are effective at blocking ligand-induced cell growth, dormant cells persist eventually giving rise to MBC progression.

The highly metastatic 4T1 breast carcinoma model possesses features of a hybrid epithelial/mesenchymal phenotype.

Epithelial-mesenchymal transitions (EMTs) are thought to promote metastasis via downregulation of E-cadherin (also known as Cdh1) and upregulation of mesenchymal markers such as N-cadherin (Cdh2) and vimentin (Vim). Contrary to this, E-cadherin is retained in many invasive carcinomas and promotes collective cell invasion. To investigate how E-cadherin regulates metastasis, we examined the highly metastatic, E-cadherin-positive murine 4T1 breast cancer model, together with the less metastatic, 4T1-related cell lines 4T07, 168FARN and 67NR.

Cuticle development and the underlying transcriptome-metabolome associations during early seedling establishment.

The plant cuticle is a complex extracellular lipid barrier that has multiple protective functions. This study investigated cuticle deposition by integrating metabolomics and transcriptomics data gathered from six different maize seedling organs of four genotypes, the inbred lines B73 and Mo17, and their reciprocal hybrids. These datasets captured the developmental transition of the seedling from heterotrophic skotomorphogenic growth to autotrophic photomorphogenic growth, a transition that is highly vulnerable to environmental stresses.

Filamentation of a relativistic proton bunch in plasma.

We show in experiments that a long, underdense, relativistic proton bunch propagating in plasma undergoes the oblique instability, which we observe as filamentation. We determine a threshold value for the ratio between the bunch transverse size and plasma skin depth for the instability to occur. At the threshold, the outcome of the experiment alternates between filamentation and self-modulation instability (evidenced by longitudinal modulation into microbunches).

Hypoxia-mediated repression of pyruvate carboxylase drives immunosuppression.

Background: Metabolic plasticity mediates breast cancer survival, growth, and immune evasion during metastasis. However, how tumor cell metabolism is influenced by and feeds back to regulate breast cancer progression are not fully understood. We identify hypoxia-mediated suppression of pyruvate carboxylase (PC), and subsequent induction of lactate production, as a metabolic regulator of immunosuppression.

Co-Delivery of an Innovative Organoselenium Compound and Paclitaxel by pH-Responsive PCL Nanoparticles to Synergistically Overcome Multidrug Resistance in Cancer.

In this study, we designed the association of the organoselenium compound 5'-Seleno-(phenyl)-3'-(ferulic-amido)-thymidine (AFAT-Se), a promising innovative nucleoside analogue, with the antitumor drug paclitaxel, in poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL)-based nanoparticles (NPs). The nanoprecipitation method was used, adding the lysine-based surfactant, 77KS, as a pH-responsive adjuvant. The physicochemical properties presented by the proposed NPs were consistent with expectations.

Flexible processing of distractor stimuli under stress.

Acute stress is assumed to affect executive processing of stimulus information, although extant studies have yielded heterogeneous findings. The temporal flanker task, in which a target stimulus is preceded by a distractor of varying utility, offers a means of investigating various components involved in the adjustment of information processing and conflict control. Both behavioral and EEG data obtained with this task suggest stronger distractor-related response activation in conditions associated with higher predictivity of the distractor for the upcoming target.

Pathological findings in South American camelids presented at a farm animal clinic in Northern Germany (2005-2021).

To expand the knowledge about common diseases in llamas and alpacas in Germany, a screening of the cases of South American camelids presented at the Clinic for Swine and Small Ruminants of the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, Germany from 2005 to the end of November 2021 was performed. A retrospective evaluation of necropsy reports from this period was conducted. Overall, necropsy reports were evaluated from 187 alpacas, 35 llamas and one vicuña (n = 223).

New dynamic diamond anvil cell for time-resolved radial x-ray diffraction.

Dysregulation of the ubiquitin-proteasome systems is a hallmark of various disease states including neurodegenerative diseases and cancer. Ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase L1 (UCHL1), a deubiquitinating enzyme, is expressed primarily in the central nervous system under normal physiological conditions, however, is considered an oncogene in various cancers, including melanoma, lung, breast, and lymphoma. Thus, UCHL1 inhibitors could serve as a viable treatment strategy against these aggressive cancers.

Hosing of a Long Relativistic Particle Bunch in Plasma.

Experimental results show that hosing of a long particle bunch in plasma can be induced by wakefields driven by a short, misaligned preceding bunch. Hosing develops in the plane of misalignment, self-modulation in the perpendicular plane, at frequencies close to the plasma electron frequency, and are reproducible. Development of hosing depends on misalignment direction, its growth on misalignment extent and on proton bunch charge.

This study investigated the relationship between the stiffness of the upper trapezius muscle and the range of rotational movement of the cervical spine. A total of 60 right-handed asymptomatic students participated in the study. Participants (N = 22) characterised by asymmetry in rotational movements were selected for the experimental group.
