Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cognitive impairment and the deposition of amyloid plaques in the brain. In a transgenic mouse model of AD, cognitive impairment and synaptic dysfunction were revealed to be associated with soluble amyloid oligomers and to occur prior to plaque formation.
