First case report of papillary thyroid carcinoma arising within a functional teratoma in Graves' disease patient.

Aim: Mature cystic teratoma is the most common kind of ovarian germ tumor. However, malignant transformation is uncommon, differentiated thyroid carcinoma is even rare. Hyperthyroidism due to coexistence of Graves' disease (GD) and struma ovarii has been reported.

The feeding of dietary Codonopsis pilosula polysaccharide enhances the immune responses, the expression of immune-related genes and the growth performance of red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii).

Polysaccharides have many functions in aquatic animals and are widely used as immunopotentiators. However, despite the emergence of serious diseases, few studies have explored the effects of Codonopsis pilosula polysaccharide (CPP) on crustaceans. We studied the effects of CPP on the growth performance, nonspecific immunity, antioxidant activity and disease resistance of red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii).

Effects of hesperidin on the growth performance, antioxidant capacity, immune responses and disease resistance of red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii).

We evaluated the effects of hesperidin on the nonspecific immunity, antioxidant capacity and growth performance of red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii). A total of 900 healthy crayfish were randomly divided into six groups: the control group (fed the basal diet) and the HES25, HES50, HES75, HES100 and HES150 groups, which were fed the basal diet supplemented with 25, 50, 75, 100 and 150 mg kg hesperidin, respectively. The feeding experiment lasted 8 weeks.

Iron Overload Associated Endocrine Dysfunction Leading to Lower Bone Mineral Density in Thalassemia Major.

Context: Patients with thalassemia major (TM) have a lower bone mineral density (BMD) and higher risk of fracture than the general population. The possible mechanisms include anemia, iron overload, malnutrition, and hormonal deficiency, but these have not been thoroughly investigated.

Objective: To identify major mineral and hormonal factors related to BMD in adult TM patients to provide human evidence for the proposed mechanisms.

UNBS5162 as a novel naphthalimide holds efficacy in human gastric carcinoma cell behaviors mediated by AKT/ERK signaling pathway.

Studies have determined that UNBS5162, recognized as a new naphthalimide, holds inhibitory effects in prostate and breast tumors; however, its functional implication on gastric carcinoma is currently undetermined. Based on this, this study designed to assess the functional role of it on human gastric carcinoma and underlying mechanism of action. Cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay, transwell assay, and flow cytometry were used to assess capabilities of SGC-7901 cell proliferation, invasion/migration, and apoptosis, respectively.

Immunomodulatory intervention with Gamma interferon in mice with sepsis.

Aims: Sepsis-triggered immune paralysis including T-cell dysfunction increase susceptibility to infection. Gamma interferon (IFNg) exert beneficial effects in patients with sepsis. Herein, we speculated that IFNg may attenuate T-cell dysfunction induced by sepsis, although the mechanisms remain elusive.

A 38-year-old male patient presented with general weakness, polydipsia and a body weight loss of 10 kg in two years. Hypopituitarism with central hypothyroidism and central adrenal insufficiency were noted at Taipei City Hospital (Taipei, Taiwan). However, hypogonadotropic hypergonadism was also observed.

[Effects of recombinant fusion protein interleukin-18 on expression of immune-inflammatory factors in mice infected with Staphylococcus aureus].

Objective: To observe the effects of recombinant fusion protein interleukin (IL)-18 on the expression of immune-inflammatory factors in the mice infected with Staphylococcus aureus (SA), and to investigate the mechanism of action of IL-18 in defense of SA infection in vivo.

Methods: A total of 40 specific pathogen-free female BLAB/c mice were randomly divided into four groups: control, SA infection, immunized, and intervention. A mouse model of SA infection was established by nasal inoculation with SA liquid.

[Clinical Value of F-FDG PET/CT for Patients with B Cell Lymphoma-Associated Hemophagocytic Syndrome].

Objective: To investigate the clinical value of F-FDG PET/CT for patients with B cell lymphoma-associated hemophagocytic syndrome.

Methods: The clinical characteristics, laboratory parameters and F-FDG PET/CT data of 23 newly diagnosed patients sufferred from B cell lymphoma-associated hemophagocytic syndrome were retrospectively analyzed. The correlation between PET and laboratory parameters were determined using Spearman correlation test.

Clinicopathological study of sporadic Burkitt lymphoma in children.

Background: Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is the fourth most common malignant tumors in children, Burkitt lymphoma (BL) accounts for 30-50% of all pediatric lymphomas. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinicopathologic features, immunophenotype, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection and c-myc gene rearrangement of sporadic BL in children.

Methods: Ninety-two cases of pediatric BL were retrospectively analyzed for clinical features, immunohistochemistry, EBV-encoded RNA (EBER) status by in situ hybridization and c-myc gene rearrangement by fluorescence in situ hybridization.

Invasive examinations in patients with suspected lung cancer: more may be too many.

The recent article entitled "Principles of biopsy in suspected lung cancer: priority still based on invasion in the era of targeted therapy?" published in Journal of Thoracic Disease by Chen et al., concluded the principles of biopsy in suspected lung cancer should be prioritized in sequence based on weight in clinical management, acquisition of tissue, invasion, efficiency and cost. We reported a patient with a 30-year history of pulmonary silicosis, had been found no evidence of tumor after receiving a series of invasive examinations.

[Effects of sprinkler irrigation on the plant nitrogen accumulation and translocation and kernel protein content of winter wheat].

Taking wheat cultivar Bainong AK58 as test material, a field experiment was conducted to study the plant nitrogen accumulation and translocation and kernel protein content of winter wheat under sprinkler irrigation and surface irrigation, aimed to understand the differences in the nitrogen metabolism characteristics of winter wheat under different irrigation regimes. At booting stage, no significant difference was observed in the total amount of plant nitrogen accumulation between sprinkler irrigation and surface irrigation; while from booting stage to maturing stage, the total amount of plant nitrogen accumulation under sprinkler irrigation was significantly higher. Under sprinkler irrigation, the translocation amount and contribution rate of the nitrogen stored in leaf, glume, stem and sheath at pre-anthesis to the kernel increased, while the contribution rate of the assimilated nitrogen after anthesis to the kernel nitrogen declined.

[Effects of 5-aminolevulinic acid on winter wheat dry matter accumulation after anthesis and flag leaf senescence].

Taking wheat cultivar Bainong AK58 as test material, a field experiment was conducted to study the effects of different concentration 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) (0,10, 30 and 50 mg x L(-1)) applied at initial heading stage on the post-anthesis dry matter accumulation and flag leaf senescence of the cultivar. Applying 10-50 mg x L(-1) of ALA benefited the dry matter accumulation, with its total amount at maturing stage being significantly higher than that of the control (0 mg x L(-1) ALA). 10-50 mg x L(-1) of ALA had no significant effects on the distribution of accumulated dry matter in leaf, stem and sheath, and grain, but increased the contribution of the dry matter to grain yield.

[Molecular genetic features of sporadic Burkitt's lymphoma in children].

Objective: To investigate the molecular genetic features and diagnostic aspects of sporadic Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) in children.

Methods: Tissue microarray was constructed to include 64 cases of pediatric BL and 6 cases of pediatric diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). Immunohistochemistry and fluorescence in-situ hybridization for c-myc, bcl-2, bcl-6, IgH, myc/IgH and bcl-2/IgH gene were performed.

[Effects of carbon disulfide on blood pressure and electrocardiogram for workers exposed to levels below the national maximum allowable concentration].

Objective: To study the effects of carbon disulfide exposure within the national maximum allowable concentration(MAC) on blood pressure and electrocardiogram, and associations with selected factors.

Methods: Workers in a chemical fiber factory were divided into two groups based on the type of work: a high exposure group (HEG) of 821 individuals and a low exposure group (LEG) of 259. The CS2 concentration at workplace was controlled under the national MAC.

[Clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical study of intra-abdominal non-Hodgkin B-cell lymphoma occurring in children].

Objective: To study the clinicopathologic features, immunohistochemical findings, EBV and c-myc gene status of intra-abdominal non-Hodgkin B-cell lymphoma occurring in children.

Methods: Seventy-four cases of pediatric intra-abdominal non-Hodgkin B-cell lymphoma were retrieved from the archival file. The cases were classified according to the 2008 WHO classification.

[Clinicopathologic and prognostic study of pediatric immature teratoma].

Objective: To study the clinicopathologic features and biologic behavior of pediatric immature teratoma.

Methods: The clinical data, pathologic features, immunohistochemical findings (for cyclin D1, P27 and Ki-67) and follow-up information of 39 cases of pediatric immature teratoma were analyzed.

Results: Amongst the 39 cases studied, 12 arose in the sacrococcygeal region, 12 in testis, 5 in retroperitoneum, 4 in ovary, 4 in abdomen and 2 in mediastinum.

[Research on the polymorphism of heart fatty acid-binding protein gene in Shanxi pig breeds and their crossbred populations using PCR-RFLP].

The genetic variation in 5' - upstream (Hinf I -RFLP)and the second intron (Hinf I *-RFLP, Hae III-RFLP)of heart fatty acid-binding protein(H-FABP)gene were detected with PCR-RFLP in 286 pigs including Mashen, Shanxi white pig and their crossbred populations. The results showed as follows: (1)Mashen presented only DD genotype while other populations varied,and Mashen crossbred populations had only 2 genotypes(DD, Dd) at the Hae III-RFLP site; (2)At the Hinf I -RFLP site of the 5' -upstream region, the crossbred population of Shanxi white pig and Duroc presented only HH genotype while other populations varied. Frequency of h allele in Mashen was 0.

Efficient green coumarin dopants for organic light-emitting devices.

We have synthesized a new green fluorescent dopant C-545P having incorporated five strategically placed "methyl" steric spacers on the julolidyl ring system. C-545P has good thermal properties and photostability, and when fabricated as a dopant in an Alq(3)-hosted OLED device, it shows notable improvement in luminance efficiency and is more resistant to concentration quenching than C-545T, particularly in the doping concentration range between 1 and 2% v/v, while achieving comparable device stability.
