Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Wuda Granule (WDG) on recovery of gastrointestinal function after laparoscopic bowel resection in the setting of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS)-based perioperative care.

Methods: A total of 108 patients aged 18 years or older undergoing laparoscopic bowel resection with a surgical duration of 2 to 4.5 h were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive either WDG or placebo (10 g/bag) twice a day from postoperative days 1-3, combining with ERAS-based perioperative care.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the effectiveness and safety of foot baths using Tangbi Waixi Decoction for patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) through a multicenter double-blinded randomized controlled trial.
  • A total of 632 patients participated, receiving either a high or low dose of herbal treatment for two weeks, with results showing improvements in nerve function and reduced pain scores in both groups after 12 weeks.
  • However, the lower dose was found to be more effective than the higher dose, and overall, there were no significant differences in adverse events between the treatment and control groups, indicating the treatment was safe.

Background: Lipid management in clinic is critical to the prevention and treatment of Chronic kidney disease (CKD), while the manifestations of lipid indicators vary in types and have flexible association with CKD prognosis.

Purpose: Explore the associations between the widely used indicators of lipid metabolism and their distribution in clinic and CKD prognosis; provide a reference for lipid management and inform treatment decisions for patients with non-dialysis CKD stage 3-5.

Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study utilizing the Self-Management Program for Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease Cohort (SMP-CKD) database of 794 individuals with CKD stages 3-5.

Article Synopsis
  • Time-restricted feeding (TRF) shows promise for weight loss and health benefits in overweight and obese patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), an area previously under-researched.
  • In a short-term clinical trial, TRF led to significant improvements in kidney function, reduced uric acid levels, decreased body weight, and positive changes in gut microbiota compared to a control diet.
  • Overall, the pilot study indicates that TRF could be a feasible and effective dietary therapy for managing CKD in overweight and obese patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effectiveness of low-protein diets (LPD) for treating chronic kidney disease (CKD) in Chinese patients, analyzing data from 161 individuals over two years.
  • It found that LPD qualification rates increased significantly over time, with a noticeable decrease in urine protein/creatinine ratios (UPCR) in patients following LPD compared to those who didn't.
  • Overall, the LPD group experienced less decline in kidney function (eGFR) and better management of body weight and other metabolic indicators, suggesting that LPD may have beneficial short-term effects for CKD patients.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: The AnluoHuaxian pill (AHP) is a widely used patented medicine for chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients with advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis that has been used in China for more than 15 years. However, data are lacking on whether monotherapy with AHP can be effective in CHB patients with alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels less than 2 times the upper limit of normal (ALT<2ULN) and early liver fibrosis (F ≤ 2).

Aim Of The Study: We aimed to investigate whether monotherapy with AHP improves liver histology in these patients.

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major global health problem. Short-term self-management has been considered to effect some renal and psychological endpoints. However, there are currently very few studies about self-management for CKD that a) have been scientifically designed by a theory-based framework and b) that evaluate the long-term effects and working mechanism.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Constipation is a functional gastrointestinal disorder and one of the most prevalent conditions encountered in primary care settings. Rhubarb navel dressings have been used for more than 2,000 years in Chinese medicine to treat constipation. However, the effect of topical rhubarb administration has still not been well recognized and this strategy is not yet established as an evidence-based approach.

This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic value of the modified hypertonic saline bronchial provocation test (HS-BPT) for children with asthma by using the high-power Aerosol Provocation System (APS). A total of 330 children suspected of having asthma and receiving HS-BPT-APS were included in this prospective survey conducted in Guangzhou, China from February 2017 to September 2018. The positive rate of HS-BPT-APS and the volume and types of adverse reactions were observed.

Background: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a major public health issue causing chronic disability as well as a burden on healthcare resources. In China, a herbal drug tablet has been used as an effective and conventional therapy to alleviate clinical symptoms caused by KOA. However, evidence gathered from systematic reviews or randomized controlled trials that validated herbal drugs for the management of osteoarthritic pain is weak.

Background: Knee osteoarthritis is a major cause of disability in the aging population. Based on pathological, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and arthroscopy studies, progressive osteoarthritis involves all tissues of the joint and includes bone marrow lesions, synovial proliferation, fat pad inflammation, and high subchondral bone turnover. Recent research suggests that abnormal perfusion in bone marrow lesions, fat pads, and subchondral bone is associated with pain in knee osteoarthritis, and that dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI is a promising method for studying micro-perfusion alteration in knee osteoarthritis.

Background: Postoperative pain control after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) remains a great challenge. The management of pain in the immediate postoperative period is one of the most critical aspects to allow speedier rehabilitation and reduce the risk of postoperative complications. Recently, periarticular infiltration anesthesia has become popular, but the outcome is controversial.
