A 64-year-old male, working at a mountain site in Taitung County, suffered from primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) post trabeculectomy with well-controlled intraocular pressure (IOP) in both eyes (OU). He presented with headache accompanied by red eyes (OU) for 10 days. Physical examination revealed fever up to 38.

With the booming of worldwide agriculture intensification, brucellosis, one of the most neglected zoonotic diseases, has become an increasing challenge for global public health. Although the transmission patterns of human brucellosis (HB) have been studied in many regions, the dynamic transfer processes of risk and its driving factors remain poorly understood, especially in the context of agricultural intensification. This study attempted to explore the risk transfer of HB between the exact epidemic areas and the neighboring or distant low-risk areas to explain the impact of livestock agriculture intensification and foodborne infections on the transmission of HB in Shaanxi Province as a case study.

  • The first hepacivirus has been found in Mongolian gerbils in plague regions of China.
  • This new virus is closely related to existing hepaciviruses E and F.
  • Mongolian gerbils might serve as a useful model for studying the disease-causing potential of hepaciviruses, expanding our understanding of their genetic diversity and host range.

  • The study focuses on developing a scale to assess long-term care reablement literacy (LTCRL) among home care workers in Taiwan, emphasizing the importance of knowledge and skills in providing reablement services.
  • Using the modified Delphi technique, researchers created a 29-question assessment tool that covers aspects like obtaining, understanding, processing, and applying information related to reablement.
  • Results show that home care workers with higher education and better Chinese proficiency scored higher in LTCRL, indicating that these factors may influence their ability to deliver effective care.

Purpose: High levels of oxygen are usually used in ventilatory support and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in the intensive care unit of hospitals. Hyperoxia may induce the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that can cause lung damage and even systemic injury. In this study, the NF-κB/luciferase transgenic mouse model with non-invasive real-time in vivo imaging was established to test the functions of lactoferrin (LF) in antioxidant and anti-inflammation.

Aim: Diabetic nephropathy is the leading cause of end stage renal disease in developed countries throughout the world. The imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the antioxidant defense system is the main problem that is responsible for the progression of diabetic kidney disease. In this study, we investigated whether human extracellular superoxide dismutase (hEC-SOD) can prevent diabetic nephropathy in the rat model.

Studies have shown that an underappreciation of the importance of person-centered communication and inappropriate communication training could result in unsatisfactory communication performance from nurses. There are a large number of studies about communication training for nurses, but not so many about communication training in early stages of nursing career. The purpose of this study is to compare the effect of a traditional course versus scenario-based simulation training on nurses' communication competency, communication self-efficacy, and communication performance in discharge planning Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE).

  • Antrodia camphorata (AC), a medicinal mushroom from Taiwan, is studied for its anti-inflammatory effects in a mouse model of hyperoxia-induced lung injury.
  • The research assigned mice to different treatment groups and measured inflammatory markers, reactive oxygen species, and lung tissue changes after exposure to high oxygen levels.
  • Findings revealed that both solid-state-cultured (S-AC) and wood-cultured (W-AC) mushrooms reduced inflammation, oxidative stress, and lung damage, indicating their potential as effective anti-inflammatory agents.

Background: Clear directions and explanations from nurses related to health behaviors and discharge procedures have been shown to effectively reduce the risk of patient readmission. Nurses thus need to develop good communication skills in order to ensure that their communications help patients become better-informed and less anxious about discharge procedures.

Purpose: This research evaluates the communication skills of nurses following two different education interventions.

Foot infections are a common chronic complication and a major reason for hospitalization in patients with diabetes. Performing foot examinations correctly and thoroughly may reduce diabetic foot risks and save patients from amputation and death. To assist professional nurses to learn the procedures and tools involved in foot examination, this study proposes that nurse trainers use creative thinking methods, such as those of Mandala, and mind mapping to conduct divergent thinking and analysis of training content define feasible training strategies.

Arecoline, the main areca alkaloid in betel quid (BQ), is reported to have cytotoxic, genotoxic, and mutagenic effects in various cells. It shows strong correlation to the incidence of oral submucous fibrosis, leukoplakia, and oral cancer. To clarify the role of arecoline in BQ-induced carcinogenesis, primary human gingival keratinocyes (GK) and human KB epithelial cells were used for studying the molecular mechanisms of arecoline-mediated cell cycle deregulation for comparison.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to investigate the presence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) in the villi cells of pregnant women during their first trimester who tested positive for HBsAg.
  • - Researchers used various methods like immunohistochemical staining and PCR to detect HBV infection markers, and they observed positive findings in 32% of the villi samples examined.
  • - The results indicated that HBV can infect different types of cells within the villi, but the virus is unlikely to spread through desmosomes between cells.
