- Acetaminophen (APAP) overdose can lead to acute liver injury (ALI), and current treatments for this condition are limited; however, astilbin, a compound from Smilax glabra with antioxidant properties, shows promise in protecting against ALI.
- In a study with mice, astilbin was administered prior to APAP exposure, and the results indicated that it helped reduce ALI by altering gut microbiota and increasing beneficial metabolites like hydroxytyrosol.
- Further analysis revealed that hydroxytyrosol also provided protective effects by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation in the liver, demonstrating that astilbin promotes liver health through its interaction with gut microbes and metabolites.
