Vesicles play critical roles in cellular materials storage and signal transportation, even in the formation of organelles and cells. Natural vesicles are composed of a lipid layer that forms a membrane for the enclosure of substances inside. Here we report a coacervate vesicle formed by the liquid-liquid phase separation of cholesterol-modified DNA and histones.

Early dissemination refers to the process by which cancer cells spread to distant organs at an early stage of the disease, often before the primary tumor is clinically detectable. Experimental studies have demonstrated that Her2 promotes early dissemination of breast cancer by inhibiting the p38 signaling pathway. However, the precise mechanism by which Her2 suppresses the activation of p38 signaling in early-stage cancer cells (ECCs) remains unclear.

In this study, we developed a novel digital surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) chip that integrates an inverted pyramid microcavity array, a microchannel cover plate, and a multilayer gold nanoparticle (AuNP) SERS substrate. This innovative design exploits the synergistic effects of the microcavity array and the microchannel to enable rapid and large-scale digital discretization of bacterial suspensions. The concentration effect of the picoliter cavities, combined with the superior Raman enhancement effect of the multilayer AuNP SERS substrate, allows for the precise identification of live bacteria within the microcavities through in situ and label-free SERS testing after a short incubation period.

Solar-driven CO selective reduction with high conversion is a challenging task yet holds immense promise for both CO neutralization and green fuel production. Enhancing CO adsorption at the catalytic centre can trigger a highly efficient CO capture-to-conversion process. Herein, we introduce cucurbit[n]urils (CB[n]), a new family of molecular ligands, as a key component in the creation of a 3D cage-like metal (nickel, Ni)-complex molecular co-catalyst (CB[7]-Ni) for photocatalysis.

Conventional solid-based SERS substrates often face challenges with inconsistent sample distribution, while liquid-based SERS substrates are prone to aggregation and precipitation, resulting in irreproducible signals in both cases. In this study, we tackled this dilemma by designing and synthesizing raspberry-like plasmonic nanoaggregates that exhibit a high density of hotspots and are colloidally stable at the same time. In particular, the nanoaggregates consist of a core made of functionalized polystyrene (PS) microspheres, which act as a template for rapid self-assembly of Au@Ag core-shell nanoparticles to form raspberry-like hierarchical nanoaggregates within 5 min of mixing.

Biomolecular condensates, which arise from liquid-liquid phase separation within cells, may provide a means of enriching and prolonging the retention of small-molecule drugs within cells. Here we report a method for the controlled in situ formation of biomolecular condensates as reservoirs for the enrichment and retention of chemotherapeutics in cancer cells, and show that the approach can be leveraged to enhance antitumour efficacies in mice with drug-resistant tumours. The method involves histones as positively charged proteins and doxorubicin-intercalated DNA strands bioorthogonally linked via a click-to-release reaction between trans-cyclooctene and tetrazine groups.

Nucleocytoplasmic large DNA viruses (NCLDVs; also called giant viruses), constituting the phylum Nucleocytoviricota, can infect a wide range of eukaryotes and exchange genetic material with not only their hosts but also prokaryotes and phages. A few NCLDVs were reported to encode genes conferring resistance to beta‑lactam, trimethoprim, or pyrimethamine, suggesting that they are potential vehicles for the transmission of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the biome. However, the incidence of ARGs across the phylum Nucleocytoviricota, their evolutionary characteristics, their dissemination potential, and their association with virulence factors remain unexplored.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of specific small ubiquitin-like modifier (SUMO) proteases 1 (SENP1)-mediated deSUMOylation on the malignant behavior of glioma stem cells (GSCs) under hypoxia conditions and evaluate the clinical value of prevention in glioma patients. Under hypoxic conditions, upregulated hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF1α) expression in GSCs activates Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathways, which provide rich nutritional support for glioblastoma (GBM). SENP1-mediated deSUMOylation stabilizes the expression of HIF1α and β-catenin, leading to the occurrence of GSCs-initiated tumorigenesis.
