The vaquita is the most critically endangered marine mammal, with fewer than 19 remaining in the wild. First described in 1958, the vaquita has been in rapid decline for more than 20 years resulting from inadvertent deaths due to the increasing use of large-mesh gillnets. To understand the evolutionary and demographic history of the vaquita, we used combined long-read sequencing and long-range scaffolding methods with long- and short-read RNA sequencing to generate a near error-free annotated reference genome assembly from cell lines derived from a female individual.

Passive acoustic listening stations (PALS) show rapid onset of ecological effects of harmful algal blooms in real time.

Monitoring ecological changes in marine ecosystems is expensive and time-consuming. Passive acoustic methods provide continuous monitoring of soniferous species, are relatively inexpensive, and can be integrated into a larger network to provide enhanced spatial and temporal coverage of ecological events. We demonstrate how these methods can be used to detect changes in fish populations in response to a Karenia brevis red tide harmful algal bloom by examining sound spectrum levels recorded by two land-based passive acoustic listening stations (PALS) deployed in Sarasota Bay, Florida, before and during a red tide event.

Phthalates are chemical esters used as additives in common consumer goods, such as plastics, household cleaners, and personal care products. Phthalates are not chemically bound to the items to which they are added and can easily leach into the surrounding environment. Anthropogenic drivers, such as coastal plastic pollution and wastewater runoff, increase the exposure potential for coastal marine fauna.

The stiffness of the cellular environment controls malignant cell phenotype and proliferation. However, the effect of viscous dissipation on these parameters has not yet been investigated, in part due to the lack of in vitro cell substrates reproducing the mechanical properties of normal tissues and tumors. In this article, we use a newly reported viscoelastic polyacrylamide gel cell substrate, and we characterize the impact of viscous dissipation on three malignant cell lines: DU145 and PC3 derived from prostate and LN229 from brain.

This paper outlines a research and dissemination protocol to be undertaken with specific groups of marginalised women in Australia. Women impacted by significant mental distress, disability, or refugee status are among society's most vulnerable and disenfranchised groups. They can experience significant social exclusion, marginalisation and stigma, associated with reduced help seeking, deprivation of dignity and human rights, and threats to health, well-being and quality of life.

Effect of an Early Palliative Care Telehealth Intervention vs Usual Care on Patients With Heart Failure: The ENABLE CHF-PC Randomized Clinical Trial.

Objective: To determine the effect of an early palliative care telehealth intervention over 16 weeks on the quality of life, mood, global health, pain, and resource use of patients with advanced heart failure.

Design, Setting, And Participants: A single-blind, intervention vs usual care randomized clinical trial was conducted from October 1, 2015, to May 31, 2019, among 415 patients 50 years or older with New York Heart Association class III or IV heart failure or American College of Cardiology stage C or D heart failure at a large Southeastern US academic tertiary medical center and a Veterans Affairs medical center serving high proportions of rural dwellers and African American individuals.

The tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) is globally distributed with established coastal and open-ocean movement patterns in many portions of its range. While all life stages of tiger sharks are known to occur in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM), variability in habitat use and movement patterns over ontogeny have never been quantified in this large marine ecosystem. To address this data gap we fitted 56 tiger sharks with Smart Position and Temperature transmitting tags between 2010 and 2018 and examined seasonal and spatial distribution patterns across the GoM.

Challenges to successful research careers in neurology: How gender differences may play a role.

There has been a substantial rise in the number of women pursuing careers in neurology. However, research has shown that women in neurology have high rates of burnout with gender disparities in burnout and attrition in the field. Recently, there was a call from the NIH, including the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, asking for input on factors that may limit or discourage grant applications from women.

Wellness project implementation within Houston's Faith and Diabetes initiative: a mixed methods study.

Background: Faith-based health promotion has shown promise for supporting healthy lifestyles, but has limited evidence of reaching scale or sustainability. In one recent such effort, volunteers from a diverse range of faith organizations were trained as peer educators to implement diabetes self-management education (DSME) classes within their communities. The purpose of this study was to identify factors associated with provision of these classes within six months of peer-educator training.

The microbiota associated with bottlenose dolphins () are believed to influence their health status, but it remains poorly understood. We therefore characterized and compared the bacterial microbiome of bottlenose dolphins from six different anatomical sites that represent four different body systems (respiratory, digestive, reproductive, and integumentary).

A Clinical Tool to Identify Candidates for Stress-First Myocardial Perfusion Imaging.

Objectives: This study sought to develop a clinical model that identifies a lower-risk population for coronary artery disease that could benefit from stress-first myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) protocols and that can be used at point of care to risk stratify patients.

Background: There is an increasing interest in stress-first and stress-only imaging to reduce patient radiation exposure and improve patient workflow and experience.

Efficient seed germination and establishment are important traits for field and glasshouse crops. Large-scale germination experiments are laborious and prone to observer errors, leading to the necessity for automated methods. We experimented with five crop species, including tomato, pepper, Brassica, barley, and maize, and concluded an approach for large-scale germination scoring.

Brain fog in postural tachycardia syndrome: An objective cerebral blood flow and neurocognitive analysis.

Background: It remains unclear whether brain fog is related to impaired cerebral blood flow (CBF) in postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS) patients.

Methods: We assessed CBF in the posterior cerebral artery (PCA) using transcranial Doppler with visual stimuli in 11 POTS and 8 healthy subjects in the seated position, followed by neurocognitive testing.

Results: CBF parameters were similar between the two groups.

Are Certain Health Centers Better Patient-Centered Medical Homes for People with Severe Mental Illness?

Patient-centered medical homes based at federally-qualified health centers (FQHCs) can benefit patients with complex health needs, such as severe mental illness (SMI). However, little is known about FQHC characteristics associated with changes in health care expenditures and utilization for individuals with SMI. Using North Carolina Medicaid claims and FQHC data from the Uniform Data System, multivariate regression identified FQHC characteristics associated with total expenditures, medication adherence and emergency department utilization among adults with SMI, controlling for time-invariant differences by health center.
