There are generally three stages to the development of rules for matching vital events data from two sources covering the same population: (a) establishing a set of "true" matches and nonmatches; (b) determining the best tolerance limits for each single characteristic which might be used in matching; and (c) experimenting to determine the set or sets of characteristics and the weights to be used in classifying a pair of records as matched or nonmatched. Specific examples, based on early matching experiments with data from the dual record system of the Mindanao Center for Population Studies (MCPS), are presented. Successive application of different sets of characteristics (differential valence rule) to the remaining unmatched events produced an acceptable rule for matching in this study.

The uptake of 99mTc-polyphosphate (Tc-PP) by each process was measured in an animal model that permitted bone formation and resorption to be studied independently. Ten rats received intramuscular implants of bone-forming demineralized matrix (DM) and resorbing devitalized bone (DV).

Sterile 7 mm. polyethylene implants were implanted in standard 6 mm. bilateral midfibular fracture gaps in thirty rats (sixty defects), and six rats were used as controls with identical bilateral midfibular fracture gaps.

This paper describes three main methods of assessment: simple clinical tests of muscle function; thermal probe measurements of metabolic heat production during muscular contraction; needle biopsy studies of muscle structure and chemistry. These methods, though at a relatively early stage of development, have given promising results which suggest that they could be useful in assessing possible new forms of treatment in patients with neuromuscular disorders.

Addition of a desalted aqueous extract made from dried leaves of Solanum glaucophyllum produced a marked stimulation of bone resorption in a culture system in vitro. This result indicates that, like the biologically active forms of vitamin D, the active material in the plant not only stimulates intestinal calcium absorption but increases bone mobilization as well.

The lipid composition of both intracellular and extracellular forms of the ERA strain of rabies virus grown in BHK/21 cells was determined. The lipids from purified preparations of both intracellular and extracellular virus yielded 57 and 58% neutral lipid, respectively. The phospholipids of the intracellular and extracellular virus constituted 43 and 42%, respectively.

Growth of weanling rats was significantly depressed after 8 days of asparagine depletion produced by dietary means or by asparaginase treatment. Moreover, the concentration of free asparagine was significantly lowered in forebrain, skeletal muscle, liver, kidney, spleen and small intestines 3 h after an asparaginase injection, but remained lowered only in forebrain and skeletal muscle after 8 days of enzymic or dietary depletion of asparagine.
