The growing plastics end-of-life crisis threatens ecosystems and human health globally. Microbial plastic degradation and upcycling have emerged as potential solutions to this complex challenge, but their industrial feasibility and limitations thereon have not been fully characterized. In this perspective paper, we review literature describing both plastic degradation and transformation of plastic monomers into value-added products by microbes.

This has the potential to significantly affect patient outcomes, particularly for head and neck cancers (HNC) given the large variance in target volume delineation. With this understanding, we incorporated a prospective systematic peer contour-review process into our workflow for all patients with HNC.

When an individual opts to vaccinate or wear a mask, they may lower their own risk of becoming infected as well as the risk that they pose to others while infected. The first benefit-reducing susceptibility-has been established across multiple studies, while the second-reducing infectivity-is less well understood.

We explore the application of an automated approach with human review and intervention to blind applications during the annual medical physics residency review cycle.
Methods And Materials: Applications were blinded using an automated process and used for the first phase of residency review in the program.

Background: The accuracy of a corrective osteotomy is dependent on many factors. One error rarely considered is using noncentered fluoroscopic imaging to assess intraoperative alignment. This study quantified the coronal alignment error produced by visual parallax per interval changes in vertical and horizontal positioning of the C-arm and alignment rod during intraoperative evaluation.

Methods: Data were generated through routine testing and contact tracing at a large university.

The current clinical interface for Varian's intrafraction motion review (IMR) is limited, providing only qualitative data for review at the treatment console. This study provides a method of extracting and interpreting data from combined log files for quantitative evaluation. Combined log files acquired during patient treatment and a parsing code was developed to scan the combined log file looking for unique identifiers pertaining to the data of interest.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) contains various growth factors associated with a positive healing response, but few existing clinical studies are available to determine the risks and benefits of these therapies.
Purpose: To determine the effects of intraoperative PRP on postoperative knee function and complications at 2 years after ACL reconstruction with meniscal repair.
Background: COVID-19 is a global pandemic with many patients requiring prolonged mechanical ventilation. COVID-19 is associated with laryngeal oedema and a high rate of reintubation and difficult airway. Tracheostomy insertion is an aerosol generating procedure, so we strived to make our novel technique safe for operator and patient.

Materials And Methods: Ten male patients were enrolled in this study and treated for prostate cancer with implanted electromagnetic monitoring beacons. We evaluated the accuracy and limitations of Intrafraction Motion Review (IMR) by comparing the known locations of the beacons using the electromagnetic monitoring system to the position data reported from IMR images.
Neuronal cell types are the nodes of neural circuits that determine the flow of information within the brain. Neuronal morphology, especially the shape of the axonal arbor, provides an essential descriptor of cell type and reveals how individual neurons route their output across the brain. Despite the importance of morphology, few projection neurons in the mouse brain have been reconstructed in their entirety.

Telemedicine technology has potential to improve outcomes and patient experience further. This study was designed to determine whether the combination of MIS, ERP and a structured telemedicine programme (TeleRecovery) could shorten total 30-day LOS by 50 per cent.

Ejecta with a size much larger than the mean particle size of feedstock powder have been observed in powder bed fusion additive manufacturing, both during post-process sieving and embedded within built components. However, their origin has not been adequately explained. Here, we test a hypothesis on the origin of large (much larger than the mass-median-diameter of feedstock powder) ejecta-that, in part, they result from stochastic, inelastic collisions of ejecta and coalescence of partially-sintered agglomerates.

Cutaneous wounds caused by an exposure to high doses of ionizing radiation remain a therapeutic challenge. While new experimental strategies for treatment are being developed, there are currently no off-the-shelf therapies for the treatment of cutaneous radiation injury that have been proven to promote repair of the damaged tissues. Plasma-based biomaterials are biologically active biomaterials made from platelet enriched plasma, which can be made into both solid and semi-solid forms, are inexpensive, and are available as off-the-shelf, nonrefrigerated products.

However, the biological mechanisms that underlie impaired sensory processing associated with neurodevelopmental disorders are generally understudied and poorly understood. We found that SYNGAP1 haploinsufficiency in humans, which causes a sporadic neurodevelopmental disorder defined by cognitive impairment, autistic features, and epilepsy, also leads to deficits in tactile-related sensory processing.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Pathologic mutations in SYNGAP1 cause a genetically defined form of intellectual disability (ID) with comorbid epilepsy and autistic features. While only recently discovered, pathogenicity of this gene is a relatively frequent genetic cause of classically undefined developmental delay that progresses to ID with commonly occurring comorbidities.
Main Body: A meeting of 150 people was held that included affected individuals and their caregivers, clinicians that treat this and related brain disorders, neuroscientists that study SYNGAP1 biology or the function of related genes, and representatives from government agencies that fund science and approve new medical treatments.
Introduction: Definitive treatment of localised colorectal cancer involves surgical resection of the primary tumour. Short-stay colectomies (eg, 23-hours) would have important implications for optimising the efficiency of inpatient care with reduced resource utilisation while improving the overall recovery experience with earlier return to normalcy. It could permit surgical treatment of colorectal cancer in a wider variety of settings, including hospital-based ambulatory surgery environments.

In patients with extremity and digit involvement, the irregular surface and depth variations create difficulty in delivering a homogenous dose using electrons. We sought to evaluate photon irradiation with rice packing as tissue equivalence and determine clinical tolerance and response.

Simulations were performed using the Monte Carlo code Geant4 to determine enhancement in absorption of low- versus high-energy X-rays by Pt and to determine dose enhancement factors (DEFs) for a Pt-sensitized tumor phantom. In vitro studies were carried out using Typ-Pt and again with carboplatin due to the unexpected in vivo toxicity of Typ-Pt.
