Introduction: Chemoradiotherapy (CRT) is the standard of care in inoperable non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients, favoring concurrent (cCRT) over sequential CRT (seqCRT), with adjuvant immunotherapy in responders. Elderly and frail NSCLC patients have generally been excluded from trials in the past. In elderly patients however, the higher treatment related morbidity of cCRT, may outweigh the possible lower tumor control of seqCRT.

Background: The antigen CA125 is mainly known as a tumour marker in ovarian cancer, but may also be elevated in benign gynaecological disorders and non-gynaecological diseases.

Case Description: We examined a 21-year-old patient in the gynaecological oncology outpatient clinic, after she was referred with abnormal ovaries on ultrasound and a significantly elevated CA125. The patient had seen a gynaecologist four weeks earlier because of persistent abdominal pain, deep dyspareunia and vaginal bleeding after insertion of a Mirena IUD that has since been removed.

Novel magnetic-resonance-guided radiotherapy (MRgRT) permits real-time soft-tissue visualization, respiratory-gated delivery with minimal safety margins, and time-consuming daily plan re-optimisation. We report on early clinical outcomes of MRgRT and routine plan re-optimization for large primary renal cell cancer (RCC). Thirty-six patients were treated with MRgRT in 40 Gy/5 fractions.

Most massive galaxies have supermassive black holes at their centres, and the masses of the black holes are believed to correlate with properties of the host-galaxy bulge component. Several explanations have been proposed for the existence of these locally established empirical relationships, including the non-causal, statistical process of galaxy-galaxy merging, direct feedback between the black hole and its host galaxy, and galaxy-galaxy merging and the subsequent violent relaxation and dissipation. The empirical scaling relations are therefore important for distinguishing between various theoretical models of galaxy evolution, and they furthermore form the basis for all black-hole mass measurements at large distances.

Re-ionization of the intergalactic medium occurred in the early Universe at redshift z ≈ 6-11, following the formation of the first generation of stars. Those young galaxies (where the bulk of stars formed) at a cosmic age of less than about 500 million years (z ≲ 10) remain largely unexplored because they are at or beyond the sensitivity limits of existing large telescopes. Understanding the properties of these galaxies is critical to identifying the source of the radiation that re-ionized the intergalactic medium.

Preclinical animal models informing antimalarial drug development are scarce. We have used asexual erythrocytic Plasmodium cynomolgi infections of rhesus macaques to model Plasmodium vivax during preclinical development of compounds targeting parasite phospholipid synthesis. Using this malaria model, we accumulated data confirming highly reproducible infection patterns, with self-curing parasite peaks reproducibly preceding recrudescence peaks.

The apical membrane antigen 1 (AMA1), merozoite surface antigen 2 (MSA2), and merozoite surface protein 1 (MSP1) are asexual-stage proteins currently being evaluated for inclusion in a vaccine for Plasmodium falciparum. Plasmodium knowlesi provides a highly versatile transfection system for malaria, since it enables rapid genetic modification of the parasite both in vivo as well as in vitro. However, it is not possible to perform multiple genetic manipulations within one parasite line because of a lack of selectable markers. An inwardly rectifying anion channel in malaria-infected red blood cells has been proposed to function as the "new permeation pathway" for parasite nutrient acquisition. As the channel shares several properties with the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), we tested their interrelationship by whole-cell current measurements in Plasmodium falciparum-infected and uninfected red blood cells from control and cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. A CFTR-like linear chloride conductance as well as a malaria parasite-induced and a shrinkage-activated endogenous inwardly rectifying chloride conductance with properties identical to the malaria-induced channel were all found to be defective in CF erythrocytes.
