Background: Population size estimates (PSEs) for hidden populations at increased risk of HIV, including female sex workers (FSWs), are important to inform public health policy and resource allocation. The service multiplier method (SMM) is commonly used to estimate the sizes of hidden populations. We used this method to obtain PSEs for FSWs at 9 sites in Zimbabwe and explored methods for assessing potential biases that could arise in using this approach.

Background: Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) is a small phospholipid-signaling molecule, which can alter responses to stress in the central nervous system.

Objective: We hypothesized that exogenous LPA would increase the size of infarct and reduce microregional O2 supply/consumption balance after cerebral ischemia-reperfusion.

Methods: This was tested in isoflurane-anesthetized rats with middle cerebral artery blockade for 1 h and reperfusion for 2 h with or without LPA (1 mg/kg, at 30, 60, and 90 min after reperfusion).

We previously reported that high levels of plasma neurotensin (NT), a gut hormone released from enteroendocrine cells of the small bowel, contribute to obesity and comorbid conditions. Gut microbiota has been implicated in the obesity development. Paneth cells are critical in maintaining gut microbiota composition and homeostasis by releasing antimicrobial proteins including α-defensins.

Article Synopsis
  • - The pilot study aimed to address poor menstrual health and hygiene in secondary schools in Entebbe, Uganda, through a multifaceted intervention that included teacher training, a drama skit, training on menstrual kits, pain relief guidance, and improvements to school WASH facilities.
  • - Data collection methods included quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to evaluate various aspects of the intervention's implementation, such as fidelity, reach, and acceptability, focusing on students aged 13-21.
  • - While most intervention components were implemented effectively—like the drama skit and menstrual kit training—challenges arose with the school-owned components, such as the puberty education training and WASH improvements, though overall, participants found the intervention acceptable.

Mental, neurological and substance use (MNS) disorders are a leading, but neglected, cause of morbidity and mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. The treatment gap for MNS is vast with only 10% of people with MNS disorders in low-income countries accessing evidence-based treatments. Reasons for this include low awareness of the burden of MNS disorders and limited evidence to support development, adaptation and implementation of effective and feasible treatments.

Background: We determined the prevalence of and risk factors for alcohol misuse and illicit drug use among young Ugandans in fishing communities, a recognised "key population" for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional survey among young people (15-24 years) in fishing communities in Koome, Uganda, in December 2017-July 2018. Using Audio-Assisted Self-Interviewing, we collected data on socio-demographic characteristics and alcohol use, including the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) and timeline follow-back calendar (TLFB).

Background: The Thinking Healthy Programme (THP) is recommended to treat perinatal depression in resource-limited settings, but scale-up is hampered by a paucity of community health workers. THP was adapted for peer-delivery (THPP) and evaluated in two randomized controlled trials in India and Pakistan. Our aim was to estimate the effectiveness of THPP on maternal outcomes across these two settings, and evaluate effect-modification by country and other pre-defined covariates.

Background: Strengthening Evidence base on scHool-based intErventions for pRomoting adolescent health (SEHER) is a multicomponent, whole-school health promotion intervention delivered by a lay counsellor or a teacher in government-run secondary schools in Bihar, India. The objective of this study is to examine the effects of the intervention after two years of follow-up and to evaluate the consistency of the findings observed over time.

Methods And Findings: We conducted a cluster randomised trial in which 75 schools were randomised (1:1:1) to receive the SEHER intervention delivered by a lay counsellor (SEHER Mitra [SM]) or a teacher (Teacher as SEHER Mitra [TSM]), respectively, alongside a standardised, classroom-based life skills Adolescence Education Program (AEP), compared to AEP alone (control group).

Covering a plateau area of approximately 125,000 km, the Urucuia Aquifer System (UAS) represents a national strategic water resource in the drought-stricken Northeastern part of Brazil. Variations in terrestrial water storage (TWS) extracted using a three-model-ensemble from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission showed a negative balance equal to water stress. Monthly GRACE-derived water storage changes from 2002 to 2014 were compared with those derived from an independent hydrologic water balance of the region using in situ measurements and estimated evapotranspiration rates.

Background And Aims: Intestinal mucosa undergoes a continual process of proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. Disruption of this homeostasis is associated with disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We investigated the role of Sirtuin 2 (SIRT2), a NAD-dependent protein deacetylase, in intestinal epithelial cell (IEC) proliferation and differentiation and the mechanism by which SIRT2 contributes to maintenance of intestinal cell homeostasis.

Background: Violence exposure in adolescence is associated with a range of poor health and social outcomes, including both the perpetration and experience of violence in later intimate relationships. However, there is little longitudinal evidence on how both individual and contextual characteristics encourage or interrupt these associations. We designed the Contexts of Violence in Adolescence Cohort study (CoVAC) to provide evidence on these pathways for Ugandan adolescents, with the aim of providing information to improve the design of violence prevention interventions for adolescents and young adults.
