Article Synopsis
  • A study examined the effects of using Precice intramedullary lengthening nails to correct post-traumatic lower-limb length discrepancies in 34 adult patients with at least 12 months of follow-up.
  • The procedure was primarily performed on the femur (28 patients) and tibia (6 patients), with most patients experiencing successful outcomes, including full weight-bearing mobility and healed lengthening sites after an average of 2 years.
  • Despite the overall success, 14 adverse events were noted in 11 patients, with 7 requiring unplanned surgeries for complications or obstacles encountered during treatment.

Background: Although the introduction of minimally invasive surgical techniques has improved surgical outcomes in recent decades, esophagectomy for esophageal cancer is still associated with severe complications and a high mortality rate. Robot-assisted surgery is already established in certain fields and robot-assisted esophagectomy may be a possible alternative to the standard minimally invasive esophagectomy. The goal of this study was to investigate whether robot assistance in esophagectomy can improve patient outcome while maintaining good oncological control.

Because the dentate gyrus serves as the first site for information processing in the hippocampal trisynaptic circuit, it an important structure for the formation of associative memories. Previous findings in rabbit had recorded populations of cells within dentate gyrus that may bridge the temporal gap between stimuli to support memory formation during trace eyeblink conditioning, an associative learning task. However, this previous work was unable to identify the types of cells demonstrating this type of activity.

One potential comorbidity after congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is gastroesophageal reflux (GER), which can have a substantial effect on patients' quality of life, thriving, and complications later in life. Efforts have been made to reduce gastroesophageal reflux with a preventive anti-reflux procedure at the time of CDH repair. In this follow-up study of neonates participating in a primary RCT study on preventive anti-reflux surgery, symptoms of GER were assessed longitudinally.

Previous studies have demonstrated that vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is upregulated in patients with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT). The use of Bevacizumab as an anti-angiogenic treatment agent seems promising. The purpose of the present study was to determine the efficacy and potential toxicity levels of bevacizumab on cell proliferation and VEGF concentrations in endothelial cells of HHT patients.

Endovascular embolization of pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (PAVMs) was historically performed with embolic coils. The Amplatzer Vascular Plug device (AVP) was introduced for this purpose in 2007 and the Micro Vascular Plug device (MVP) in 2013. The purpose of this study was to compare coils, AVPs, and MVPs in terms of risk of persistence after PAVM embolization by use of propensity score weighting to account for biases in device selection.

Purpose: Advances in therapy of metastatic castration-refractory prostate cancer (mCRPC) resulted in more therapeutic options and led to a higher need of predictive/prognostic biomarkers. Systemic inflammatory biomarkers could provide the basis for personalized treatment selection. This study aimed to assess the modified Glasgow Prognostic Score (mGPS), the neutrophile-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) in men with mCRPC under docetaxel.

The autosomal dominant trait hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) causes multiorgan dysplastic lesions of the vasculature that can activate multiple physiological cascades leading to a broad array of cardiovascular diseases. Up to 78% of patients with HHT develop hepatic arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), which cause a hyperdynamic circulatory state secondary to hepatic/portal shunting. This condition can eventually progress to high-output cardiac failure (HOCF) with continued peripheral tissue hypoxemia.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the causative agent of the COVID-19 global pandemic. SARS-CoV-2 is an enveloped RNA virus that relies on its trimeric surface glycoprotein spike for entry into host cells. Here we describe the COVID-19 vaccine candidate MV-014-212, a live, attenuated, recombinant human respiratory syncytial virus expressing a chimeric SARS-CoV-2 spike as the only viral envelope protein.

In recent years there has been increased interest in using the immune contexture of the primary tumors to predict the patient's prognosis. The tumor microenvironment of patients with cancers consists of different types of lymphocytes, tumor-infiltrating leukocytes, dendritic cells, and others. Different technologies can be used for the evaluation of the tumor microenvironment, all of which require a tissue or cell sample.

The emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants with potential resistance to existing drugs emphasizes the need for new therapeutic modalities with broad variant activity. Here we show that ensovibep, a trispecific DARPin (designed ankyrin repeat protein) clinical candidate, can engage the three units of the spike protein trimer of SARS-CoV-2 and inhibit ACE2 binding with high potency, as revealed by cryo-electron microscopy analysis. The cooperative binding together with the complementarity of the three DARPin modules enable ensovibep to inhibit frequent SARS-CoV-2 variants, including Omicron sublineages BA.

5q-associated spinal muscular atrophy is a rare neuromuscular disorder with the leading symptom of a proximal muscle weakness. Three different drugs have been approved by the European Medicines Agency and Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of spinal muscular atrophy patients, however, long-term experience is still scarce. In contrast to clinical trial data with restricted patient populations and short observation periods, we report here real-world evidence on a broad spectrum of patients with early-onset spinal muscular atrophy treated with nusinersen focusing on effects regarding motor milestones, and respiratory and bulbar insufficiency during the first years of treatment.

Serological assays have been a useful tool for detection of antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 during the COVID-19 pandemic. These assays are used for epidemiology and serosurveillance to monitor the progression of the pandemic, to identify and differentiate individuals who have developed antibodies from natural infection versus vaccine-induced immunity, and to identify potential donors of convalescent plasma for therapeutic purposes. In this chapter, we describe a commercially available bead-based serological assay, the Luminex xMAP SARS-CoV-2 Multi-Antigen IgG Assay, that detects and identifies antibodies against three SARS-CoV-2 antigens.

An unprecedented compound class of functional organic hybrids consisting of a photoswitchable norbornadiene building block and a redoxactive chromophore, namely naphthalene diimide, were designed and synthesized. Within these structures the capability of rylene chromophores to function as a redox active catalyst upon their photoexcitation was utilized to initiate the oxidative back-conversion of the in situ formed quadricyclane unit to its norbornadiene analogue. In this way successive photoexcitation at two different wavelengths enabled a controlled photoswitching between the two isomerical states of the hybrids.
