Methods: Among 108 participants, 77 chose surgery (SG), and 31 opted to wait and see (WaSG) whether they got better spontaneously. Both groups were assessed at baseline (t0) and 3 months (t1), with additional self-reported measures at 6 (t2) and 12 months (t3).

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of medication exposure in adults hospitalized at 16 hospitals in Ontario, Canada, between 2015 and 2022. We estimated the proportions of those with T2DM, obesity, and cardiovascular disease.

Clinical Meaningfulness of an Algorithm-Based Service for Analyzing Treatment Response in Patients with Metastatic Cancer Using FDG PET/CT.

: Determining how a patient with metastatic cancer is responding to therapy can be difficult for medical oncologists, especially with text-only radiology reports. In this investigation, we assess the clinical usefulness of a new algorithm-based analysis that provides spatial location and quantification for each detected lesion region of interest (ROI) and compare it to information included in radiology reports in the United States. : Treatment response radiology reports for FDG PET/CT scans were retrospectively gathered from 228 patients with metastatic cancers.

Insulin Pump Use and Diabetic Ketoacidosis Risk in Type 1 Diabetes: Secular Trends over Four Decades.

Continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) in type 1 diabetes has been regarded as a major diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) risk factor. We aimed to determine secular trends in risk since CSII implementation in the 1980s. We assessed the relationship between time-varying CSII use and DKA events from 1983 to 2017 and by each decade in the 1441 Diabetes Control and Complications Trial/Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications Study participants using crude and adjusted Cox proportional hazards models.

Examining the influence of team-based learning on medical students' comprehension and attitudes regarding psychedelic therapies.

Introduction: This study evaluates the impact of a two-hour team-based learning (TBL) curriculum on medical students' knowledge, comprehension, ethical understanding, and attitudes towards psychedelic therapies.

Methods: Sixty-three pre-surveys and fifty post-surveys assessed students' perceived knowledge and attitudes using Likert scales. Forty-eight matched pre/post-knowledge tests with multiple-choice questions quantified changes in comprehension.

Prognostic Implications of Diabetic Ketoacidosis in Adults on Long-term Mortality and Diabetes-Related Complications.

Objectives: Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) occurring after diabetes diagnosis is often associated with risk factors for other diabetes-related complications. In this study, we aimed to determine the prognostic implications of DKA on all-cause mortality and complications in type 1 diabetes (T1D).

Methods: Previously collected data from the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial/Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications (DCCT/EDIC) study were obtained through the the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases Central Repository.

Persistent disparities in insulin pump uptake despite a universal pump programme for type 1 diabetes in Ontario, Canada.

Aim: To evaluate associations between social disadvantage and insulin pump use among adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D) in the context of a universal publicly funded insulin pump programme in Ontario, Canada, and to ascertain whether social disparities in insulin pump programme enrolment have decreased over time.

Methods: Population-based cross-sectional studies were conducted using administrative healthcare data in Ontario, Canada. First, among adults aged older than 18 years diagnosed with T1D before 31 March 2021, logistic regression was used to assess the association between neighbourhood social disadvantage (Ontario marginalization index quintiles) and insulin pump use.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1) microdeletion syndrome accounts for 5 to 11% of individuals with NF-1. The aim of our study was to characterize a large cohort of individuals with NF-1 microdeletion syndrome and expand its natural history. We conducted a retrospective chart review from 1994 to 2024 of individuals with NF-1 microdeletion syndrome followed at two large Neurofibromatosis Clinics.

The Effectiveness of Mind-Body Intervention on Psychological Well-Being during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Pilot Pre-Post Interventional Study.

The pandemic highlighted the need for alternative, more accessible access to mental health interventions that can be readily administered remotely. The purpose of this pre-post-interventional study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a virtual mind-body medicine training course on stress, anxiety, and depression levels. University employees and members of the Las Vegas community were recruited via self-selection and snowball sampling and subjected to online mind-body practice sessions in December of 2020.

Turner Syndrome With Y Chromosome and Germ Cells: A Case Report Highlighting the Need to Prioritize Individualized Care.

Turner syndrome (TS) is a genetic condition in phenotypic females in which the individual has 1 intact X chromosome and the second sex chromosome is absent or structurally altered Components of Y chromosome (eg, 45,X/46,XY) have been found in 5%-15% of patients with TS; these patients are often referred to as having "Turner syndrome with Y" (TS+Y). The presence of Y chromosome material increases risk for development of gonadal tumors. Historically, prophylactic gonadectomy has been recommended in this population to prevent malignancy, and patients were presumed infertile due to the presence of streak gonads with no germ cells (GCs).

Quantitative evaluation of lesion response heterogeneity for superior prognostication of clinical outcome.

Purpose: Standardized reporting of treatment response in oncology patients has traditionally relied on methods like RECIST, PERCIST and Deauville score. These endpoints assess only a few lesions, potentially overlooking the response heterogeneity of all disease. This study hypothesizes that comprehensive spatial-temporal evaluation of all individual lesions is necessary for superior prognostication of clinical outcome.

Automatic Quantification of Serial PET/CT Images for Pediatric Hodgkin Lymphoma Patients Using a Longitudinally-Aware Segmentation Network.

Purpose: Automatic quantification of longitudinal changes in PET scans for lymphoma patients has proven challenging, as residual disease in interim-therapy scans is often subtle and difficult to detect. Our goal was to develop a longitudinally-aware segmentation network (LAS-Net) that can quantify serial PET/CT images for pediatric Hodgkin lymphoma patients.

Materials And Methods: This retrospective study included baseline (PET1) and interim (PET2) PET/CT images from 297 patients enrolled in two Children's Oncology Group clinical trials (AHOD1331 and AHOD0831).

Sociodemographic disadvantage in the burden of stress and academic performance in medical school: implications for diversity in medicine.

Background: Nontraditional students bring to medicine inherent characteristics and perspectives that enrich the learning environment and contribute to expanding diversity in medicine. However, research has shown that these students, by virtue of their sociodemographic backgrounds, face unique challenges in medical education, which ultimately place them at a disadvantage compared to their peers. The purpose of this study is to explore relationships between sociodemographic characteristics, stress, and academic performance, in the context of outcomes that may be undermining efforts to diversify the physician workforce.

We evaluated attainment of the hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) target of ≤7.0%, its temporal trends, and associated factors among adults with type 1 diabetes in Ontario, Canada, using administrative data. We conducted a retrospective cohort study, including Ontarians with type 1 diabetes ≥18 years old with ≥1 HbA1c test between April 1, 2012 (fiscal year 2013), and March 31, 2023.

Efficacy, safety, and biomarker analyses of bintrafusp alfa, a bifunctional fusion protein targeting TGF-β and PD-L1, in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer.

Background: Bintrafusp alfa, a first-in-class bifunctional fusion protein targeting transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) and programmed cell death ligand 1, has demonstrated encouraging efficacy as second-line treatment in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in a dose expansion cohort of the phase 1, open-label clinical trial (NCT02517398). Here, we report the safety, efficacy, and biomarker analysis of bintrafusp alfa in a second expansion cohort of the same trial (biomarker cohort).

Methods: Patients with stage IIIb/IV NSCLC who were either immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI)-naïve (n=18) or ICI-experienced (n=23) were enrolled.

Background: A lack of data exist about the effectiveness of active treatments for persistent plantar heel pain (PPHP).

Objectives: To compare short-term functional and clinical effects of a 4-week barefoot or shod treadmill walking program for people with PPHP.

Methods: A single-blinded clinical trial randomized 52 participants with PPHP into either a barefoot walking group (BWG), or a shod walking group (SWG).

Objective: To evaluate PET imaging dynamics in mCRPC patients on enzalutamide with stable computed tomography (CT) and technetium-99m (Tc99) bone scans.

Design, Setting, And Participants: All patients were on treatment with enzalutamide for first-line mCRPC in a clinical trial at the National Cancer Institute (Bethesda, MD, USA).
