In 2021, the Tajogaite Volcano erupted along the western slope of the Cumbre Vieja on the island of La Palma, Canary Islands, Spain. Volcanic tephra blanketed a substantial proportion of the island. By our estimations, approximately 23,000,000 m of pyroclastic ashes and more coarse-grained particles were deposited unto La Palma's land surface in addition to the lava flow.

The high proportion of woody plant species on oceanic islands has hitherto been explained mainly by gradual adaptation to climatic conditions. Here, we present a novel hypothesis that such woodiness is adaptative to volcanic ash (tephra) deposition. Oceanic islands are subject to frequent eruptions with substantial and widespread ash deposition on evolutionary time scales.

Volcanic activity provides a unique opportunity to study the ecological responses of organisms to catastrophic environmental destruction as an essential driver of biodiversity change on islands. However, despite this great scientific interest, no study of the biodiversity at an erupting volcano has yet been undertaken. On La Palma (Canary archipelago), we quantified the main species affected and their fate during the 85-day eruption (September-December 2021).

Objective: Papaya and oats are natural food and used in traditional medicine in many parts of the world. Papaya has a high content of enzymes supporting digestive function. Oats are a source of minerals, beta-glucan fibres, immunmodulatory and antiinflammatory probiotic substances.

Background: In the light of controversial data in the literature, the present study was designed to evaluate potential associations between colonic diverticular disease, constipation and quality of life.

Design: We prospectively enrolled 976 consecutive patients, who participated in the nationwide colorectal cancer screening program in four medical centers between 2008 and 2009. All patients underwent full colonoscopy and completed a standardized questionnaire.

Herein we describe the synthesis of poly-L-lysine-b-poly[N-(2-hydroxypropyl)-metha-crylamide)] (poly[HPMA]) block copolymers by combination of solid phase peptide synthesis or polymerization of α-amino acid-N-carboxy-anhydrides (NCA-polymerization) with the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT). In the presence of p-DNA, these polymers form polyplex micelles with a size of 100-200 nm in diameter (monitored by SDS-PAGE and FCS). Primary in vitro studies with HEK-293T cells reveal their cellular uptake (FACS studies and CLSM) and proof successful transfection with efficiencies depending on the length of polylysine.

Purpose: To review the performance of self-adhesive luting agents to determine their clinical evidence.

Materials And Methods: In March 2013, we conducted a literature search by means of PubMed and manually searched German and English medical journals using general search terms (e.g.

Objective: To investigate the two-body wear performance of monolithic dental ceramics with different surface treatments.

Method And Materials: Standardized specimens (n = 8/ series) were fabricated from three monolithic dental ceramics (experimental translucent zirconia, experimental shaded zirconia, lithium disilicate). Four groups of each material were defined according to clinically relevant surface treatments: polished, polishedground, polished-ground-repolished, glazed.

Introduction: Exact data on the prevalence of hemorrhoids are rare. Therefore, we designed a study to investigate the prevalence of hemorrhoids and associated risk factors in an adult general population.

Methods: Between 2008 and 2009, consecutive patients were included in a prospective study.

Aim: Little is known about the association of haemorrhoids and anorectal function. Moreover, available data on the impact of constipation on the presence of haemorrhoids are conflicting. The present study aimed to assess any potential relationship between haemorrhoids and anorectal dysfunction.

Objective: To investigate the influences of abutment water sorption and various aging parameters on the fracture resistance of zirconia copings.

Methods: Using a master die, identical replicas were made from three resin materials. The first was a melamine resin with very high water sorption (n = 48), the second an experimental resin core build-up composite with moderate water sorption (n = 40) and the third a commercially available core build-up composite with low water sorption (n = 40).

Aim: There are few studies into the quality of life of patients with haemorrhoids. The aim of this study was to assess the quality of life of patients with haemorrhoids in an adult general population.

Method: Participants, who attended the Austrian nationwide healthcare programme for colorectal cancer screening at four medical institutions, were enrolled prospectively between 2008 and 2009.

Introduction: Air insufflation during colonoscopy is considered the standard method in most endoscopic centers. Notably, several studies have reported reduced abdominal pain after colonoscopy with CO2 insufflation in unsedated and in lightly sedated patients. The present study was designed to assess the efficacy of CO2 insufflation after colonoscopy in moderately and deeply sedated patients.

Three groups of chronic, skull-anchored, percutaneous implants differing in materials, design and surgical procedures used for implantation, were tested in macaque monkeys in conjunction with studies of an inner ear stimulation device. Implants from the first two groups in which high-speed drilling methods and stainless steel materials were used, showed a high percentage of failures during the first 3 months after implantation of the percutaneous connector. Implants in the third group, in which measures were taken to preserve living bone tissue, all survived for greater than 7 months.

The pressure change inside the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) in response to pressure changes inside the antrum was investigated in man and in dogs with antral pouches. In dogs with innervated antral pouches a pressure increase of 20 cm H2O inside the antrum produced an increase in LES pressure of 14 +/- 7 mm Hg, whereas an antral pressure of 80 cm H2O caused a decrease of 26 +/- 12 mm Hg in LES pressure (x +/- SD). Truncal vagotomy abolished LES response to the various antral pressures.

The effect of glucagon on the pressure inside the lower oesophageal sphincter in conscious human subjects and anaesthetized dogs was investigated using the continuous withdrawal method. Glucagon causes a decrease in sphincteric resting pressure in both man and dog and antagonizes the pentagastrin-induced pressure increase of the lower oesophageal sphincter. In experiments on isolated muscle strips of the lower oesophageal sphincter of dogs glucagon decreases the tension and antagonizes the increase in tension induced by pentagastrin.
