FLASHlab@PITZ: New R&D platform with unique capabilities for electron FLASH and VHEE radiation therapy and radiation biology under preparation at PITZ.

At the Photo Injector Test facility at DESY in Zeuthen (PITZ), an R&D platform for electron FLASH and very high energy electron radiation therapy and radiation biology is being prepared (FLASHlab@PITZ). The beam parameters available at PITZ are worldwide unique. They are based on experiences from 20 + years of developing high brightness beam sources and an ultra-intensive THz light source demonstrator for ps scale electron bunches with up to 5 nC bunch charge at MHz repetition rate in bunch trains of up to 1 ms length, currently 22 MeV (upgrade to 250 MeV planned).

The Effect of an App-Based Home Exercise Program on Self-reported Pain Intensity in Unspecific and Degenerative Back Pain: Pragmatic Open-label Randomized Controlled Trial.

Background: The recommended first-line treatment for unspecific and degenerative back pain consists of movement exercises and patient education.

Objective: Using a pragmatic, randomized controlled trial, we evaluated the effectiveness of a digital home exercise program on self-reported pain intensity compared with the standard of care for physiotherapy.

Methods: Participant recruitment was based on newspaper advertisements and a consecutive on-site assessment for eligibility and enrollment.

Oral health-related quality of life in patients with cleft lip and/or palate or Robin sequence.

Purpose: To compare the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in patients with cleft lip and/or palate or Robin sequence versus a healthy control group using the Child Oral Health Impact Profile (COHIP-G19). Factors such as age, gender, and cleft type were considered.

Methods: Over an 8-month period, the OHRQoL was surveyed by using the COHIP-G19 questionnaire.

Tooth agenesis in German orthodontic patients with non-syndromic craniofacial disorder: a retrospective evaluation of panoramic radiographs.

Objectives: The study objective was to evaluate the tooth agenesis in German orthodontic patients with non-syndromic cleft lip and/or palate and Robin sequence compared to a control group without craniofacial disorder.

Materials/methods: A total of 108 panoramic radiographs were examined using the binary system of Tooth Agenesis Code (TAC) (excluding the third molar). Patients were divided into the craniofacial disorder group 1 (n = 43) and the healthy control group 2 (n = 65).

Intraoral scanning of neonates and infants with craniofacial disorders: feasibility, scanning duration, and clinical experience.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate intraoral scanning (IOS) in infants, neonates, and small children with craniofacial anomalies for its feasibility, scanning duration, and success rate. Impression taking in vulnerable patients can be potentially life-threatening, with the risk of airway obstruction and aspiration of impression material. The advantage of increasingly digitalized dentistry is demonstrated.

Acute arthritis of the right temporomandibular joint due to Lyme disease: a case report and literature review.

Background: Lyme disease is the most frequent tick-borne infectious disease in Europe. It often presents with a wide variety of symptoms. For this reason, affection of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) caused by Lyme disease (LD) can be misdiagnosed as a common temporomandibular disorder (TMD).

Surgical suture course for dental students with the Peyton-4-step approach versus the PDCA cycle using video assisted self-monitoring.

Background: In this prospective study the Peyton 4-step approach of demonstration-deconstruction-comprehension (verbalization by the learner), and performance by the learner was compared to the PDCA cycle/Deming-Circle (Plan-Do-Check (video assisted self-monitoring)-Act) as a teaching method for surgical suturing and nodes with end performance as the primary objective.

Methods: Students of the third clinical semester in dental medicine were randomly selected to one of the two teaching methods. They completed a first course during the third clinical semester and a subsequent course during the fourth clinical semester.

Rapid additive manufacturing of an obturator prosthesis with the use of an intraoral scanner: A dental technique.

A protocol for a completely digital manufacturing process for an obturator prosthesis is described. An intraoral scanner was used to capture the mandible and maxilla together with the sinus defect. The obturator base and the artificial teeth were created with a computer-aided design software program and manufactured by 3-dimensional printing.

Vacancy-Hydrogen Interaction in Niobium during Low-Temperature Baking.

A recently discovered modified low-temperature baking leads to reduced surface losses and an increase of the accelerating gradient of superconducting TESLA shape cavities. We will show that the dynamics of vacancy-hydrogen complexes at low-temperature baking lead to a suppression of lossy nanohydrides at 2 K and thus a significant enhancement of accelerator performance. Utilizing Doppler broadening Positron Annihilation Spectroscopy, Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy and instrumented nanoindentation, samples made from European XFEL niobium sheets were investigated.

Severe odontogenic infections with septic progress - a constant and increasing challenge: a retrospective analysis.

Background: More than 90% of all infections in the head and neck region can be traced back to an odontogenic origin. In rare cases they can lead to sepsis, which may pose a vital threat to the patient. The purpose of this study was to analyse characteristics concerning etiology and progress of severe odontogenic infections with a fulminant development.

Fungus Ball of the Maxillary Sinus-Modern Treatment by Osteoplastic Approach and Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery.

Purpose: Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is considered standard surgical therapy for fungus ball of the maxillary sinus. However, recent findings have indicated an odontogenic etiology, which requires simultaneous treatment of the dental origin. This study presents the authors' treatment results of fungus ball of the maxillary sinus using a combination of FESS and an endoscopically assisted osteoplastic approach through the anterior wall of the maxillary sinus, enabling simultaneous treatment of the dental origin.

Isolated gluteal metastasis 3 years after sufficiently treated oral squamous cell carcinoma: Case report and literature review.

Metastases from oral squamous cell carcinoma usually occur in the cervical lymph nodes. Distant skeletal muscle metastases are exceedingly rare and have been reported only in sporadic cases. A 70-year-old male patient was diagnosed with nonmetastatic oral squamous cell carcinoma (pT4a, N0, M0).

Three-dimensional accuracy of mandibular reconstruction by patient-specific pre-bent reconstruction plates using an "in-house" 3D-printer.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the three-dimensional accuracy of mandibular reconstruction following mandible continuity resection in patients treated with patient-specific, pre-bent reconstruction plates, using an 'in-house' 3D printer, with that in patients treated with conventional, intraoperatively bent plates.

Patients And Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 42 alloplastic mandibular reconstructions following continuity resection. 21 patients received patient-specific, pre-bent reconstruction plates using an in-house 3D printer.

Aberrant Clinical Appearance and Pathomorphology Noticed During an Outbreak of Histomonosis Indicates a Different Pathogenesis of Histomonas meleagridis Genotype 2.

The present case report describes a remarkable feature of Histomonas meleagridis characterized by aberrant clinical appearance and pathomorphologic lesions, which were mainly confined to the ceca, noticed during a field outbreak of histomonosis. In a flock of meat turkey toms, sudden death was noticed at the end of week 5 in the absence of specific clinical signs. Instead of the well-known sulfur-colored feces, some caseous cores were found in the litter.

Experimental study on the behavior of primary human osteoblasts on laser-cused pure titanium surfaces.

Mandibular tumor resection can lead to a mandibular segmental defect. LaserCUSING® is used to produce a mandibular implant, designed to be identical to the shape of the mandibular defect. Novel microrough surfaces result from this generative technology.

Kinematics and center of mass mechanics during terrestrial locomotion in northern lapwings (Vanellus vanellus, Charadriiformes).

Avian bipedalism is best studied in derived walking/running specialists. Here, we use kinematics and center of mass (CoM) mechanical energy patterns to investigate gait transitions of lapwings-migratory birds that forage on the ground, and therefore may need a trade-off between the functional demands of terrestrial locomotion and long distance flights. The animals ran on a treadmill while high-speed X-ray videos were recorded within the sustainable speed range.

Non-small cell lung cancer in stages I-IIIB: Long-term results of definitive radiotherapy with doses ≥ 80 Gy in standard fractionation.

Purpose: To investigate therapeutic outcome of dose escalation ≥ 80 Gy in nonresected non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Patients And Methods: 124 consecutive patients with histologically/cytologically proven NSCLC were enrolled. Tumor stage I, II, IIIA, and IIIB was diagnosed in 30, eight, 39, and 47 patients, respectively.

In the German Federal State of Saxony-Anhalt, the Health Department must be notified of vaccines administered to children <7 years of age including their names. The goal of this mandatory notification is to improve and stabilize the age-appropriate vaccination coverage. However, difficulties have been encountered in implementing mandatory notification.

Generation of GW radiation pulses from a VUV free-electron laser operating in the femtosecond regime.

Experimental results are presented from vacuum-ultraviolet free-electron laser (FEL) operating in the self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) mode. The generation of ultrashort radiation pulses became possible due to specific tailoring of the bunch charge distribution. A complete characterization of the linear and nonlinear modes of the SASE FEL operation was performed.

Determination of elements by nuclear analytical methods.

The working principle of nuclear analytical methods (NAMs) is not influenced by the chemical bond. Consequently, they are independent counterparts to the well-known chemical procedures. NAMs obey fundamental laws or can be described and understood thoroughly.

Laparoscopic electrocoagulation of the ovarian surface in infertile patients with polycystic ovarian disease.

Objective: To assess the endocrinologic and clinical outcome after laparoscopic ovarian electrocautery because of polycystic reaction to ovarian stimulation in anovulatory infertility patients.

Design: Between 1986 and 1989, 133 patients with polycystic ovarian disease underwent laparoscopic electrocoagulation of the ovarian surface in an outpatient clinic after conventional ovarian stimulation had led to polycystic reaction.

Setting: All patients were referred to our outpatient clinic affiliated with the university hospital.

[Results of treatment with surface cauterization of polycystic ovaries in sterility patients].

In 39 women with polycystic ovaries (PCO) and a history of sterility, laparoscopic electrocautery of the surface of the ovaries was performed by a technique adapted from Gjoennaess (1984). Melatonin and the ovulatory luteinizing hormone surge.

A newly developed 125I-radioimmunoassay allows for the accurate determination of physiological concentrations of plasma melatonin. Melatonin secretion does not change significantly on the day before and the day of the luteinizing hormone (LH) surge when compared with the early follicular phase. In addition, it was confirmed that the beginning of the LH surge frequently occurs in the morning and is associated with low melatonin values (six of nine women).
