Objectives: This case-control study characterized factors related to loss of root canal filled (RCF) teeth among members of the Kaiser Permanente Dental Care Program, a dental health maintenance organization based in Portland, Oregon.

Methods: Individuals were identified who were enrolled continuously from January 1, 1987, through December 31, 1994, underwent initial root canal therapy on a permanent tooth (excluding third molars) in 1987 or 1988, had a clinical examination within two years after endodontic access, and were at least 21 years old at access. Patients who lost the RCF tooth by December 31, 1994, were defined as cases (n = 96); those who did not were defined as controls (n = 120).

We explored the association between social factors and adult periodontitis by comparing self-reported information for daily strains and symptoms of depression in 71 cases and 77 controls. Cases and controls were selected from among 1,426 participants in the Erie County Risk Factor Study. We found differences among those who scored higher than their peers on measures of social strain.

The clinical and pathological findings are reported concerning a 73-year-old woman with progressive metastatic carcinoma of the left breast, who developed interfollicular Hodgkin's disease within the right cervical lymph nodes. Metastatic carcinoma and Hodgkin's disease were present concurrently as a "collision tumor' in the lymph nodes examined. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first description of a collision tumor with these particular histologic components in this tissue.

Objective: We sought to determine whether compression sonography could be eliminated in the evaluation of patients who lacked both thromboembolic risk factors and symptoms of deep-vein thrombosis and who had an indeterminate or low-probability lung scan.

Materials And Methods: The medical records of 155 consecutive patients who underwent bilateral lower-extremity sonography after an indeterminate or low-probability lung scan were reviewed. The presence of thromboembolic risk factors and deep-vein thrombosis symptoms and the result of sonography were recorded.

Purpose: To assess the frequency of lower extremity deep venous thrombosis (DVT) detected with ultrasound (US) in patients with bilateral symptoms suggestive of DVT.

Materials And Methods: Fifty patients with bilateral lower extremity symptoms suggestive of DVT were examined prospectively for predisposing factors and type of symptoms. Charts were reviewed for previous lower extremity disease or chronic illness that could explain the patient's symptoms.

A method of coculturing adult rat hepatic parenchymal cells (PC) and stromal cells in a three-dimensional framework of nylon filtration screens or biodegradable polymer meshes was developed in our laboratory. Rat liver stroma, which includes vascular and bile duct endothelial cells, fat-storing cells, fibroblasts, and Kupffer cells, were isolated by gradient centrifugation after in situ liver perfusion and expanded in monolayer culture prior to seeding onto nylon screens or bioresorbable polyglycolic acid (PGA) polymers oriented into a felt-like construct. A second inoculum of freshly isolated PC was applied after the stromal cells became established.

This paper provides an overview of the oral health status of Americans since the 1960s. Data from seven national surveys, conducted between 1960 and 1987, have been presented. Estimates of coronal and root caries, periodontal diseases, and tooth loss were reviewed.

In this essay, the potential of vascular imaging with helical CT is explored. The speed and ease with which volumes of interest can be depicted with high resolution and the ability of CT to resolve small differences in electron density allow imaging of vascular territories with IV injection of iodinated contrast materials. Vascular and combined vascular/soft-tissue/bone imaging make CT a powerful clinical tool.

Stromal cell-associated liver cell and bone marrow (BM) culture on three-dimensional nylon screen or polyglycolic acid (PGA) felt templates conveys certain functional advantages to the parenchyma of these tissues. Hepatic parenchymal cells (PC) manifest long-term ( approximately 2 month) expression of liver-specific activities including cytochrome P450 enzyme activity and the synthesis of albumin, fibrinogen, transferrin, and other proteins. PC also undergo proliferation in association with stromal cells that were pre-established on these templates.

It is well established that many systemic adverse health conditions have manifestations in the oral cavity. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the available scientific evidence that describes the opposite effect, how adverse oral health conditions affect three aspects of daily living: 1) systemic health, 2) quality of life, and 3) economic productivity. Examples of oral health affecting systemic health include rheumatic fever patients who develop infective endocarditis from oral bacteria and organ transplant patients who develop severe complications from oral infections.

The nation's health care system is currently under scrutiny. A topic of great interest to the dental community is whether dentistry should be included in a plan for national health reform, and if so, what procedures should be covered. To answer this question, 1) the current oral disease burden in the United States should be assessed, and 2) factors associated with this burden should be described.

Two aristolochiaceous plants in the genusThottea were shown to contain aristolochic acids. Larvae of two Malaysian troidine swallowtail butterflies,Troides (Troides) amphrysus andPachliopta (Losaria) neptunus, that fed onThottea leaves were found to sequester corresponding aristolochic acid analogs in the osmeterial glands.

A retrospective patient record analysis was conducted to study the cost-effectiveness of dental sealants placed under routine, unrestricted practice condition in a fluoridated community. The 26 dentists who provided care at the clinic over the period of the study used their own clinical judgement to determine sealant placement or alternative treatment. Dental services for 275 patients at a children's dental clinic for low-income families were evaluated.

The purpose of this analysis is to compare three different statistical models for predicting children likely to be at risk of developing dental caries over a 3-yr period. Data are based on 4117 children who participated in the University of North Carolina Caries Risk Assessment Study, a longitudinal study conducted in the Aiken, South Carolina, and Portland, Maine areas. The three models differed with respect to either the types of variables included or the definition of disease outcome.

Since the mid-1970s, the dental hygiene profession has experienced a decline in the number of applicants. Reasons cited for this decline are fewer traditional college-age students, an increase in the career opportunities available to women, and a decrease in student financial aid. Four-year dental hygiene programs have experienced applicant decline faster than two-year programs.

To investigate the test performance of a commercially available detection kit for human papillomavirus (HPV), the relationship between the detection of HPV by dot filter hybridization (DFH) and by standard morphologic methods was studied. Four hundred two cervical samples taken from 381 patients referred to a colposcopy clinic were examined. Human papillomavirus DNA sequences were identified and typed using commercially available anti-sense RNA probes.
