Evaluating the current status of PPC and pediatric hospice care through a community needs assessment (CNA) can help address the gaps that exist to improve and increase access to PPC for children in need.
Objectives: Using the state of Georgia as an example, the process, methods, lessons learned, and limitations in conducting a statewide PPC CNA are described.
Background: Physical fitness is a necessity for those living with a spinal cord injury, yet access to fitness facilities, equipment, and specially trained fitness experts are limited.
Methods: This article introduces the concept of a network of fitness facilities specially geared towards individuals with spinal cord injury and other neurological disorders.
Results: The Community Fitness and Wellness branch of the NeuroRecovery Network was created to provide a continuum of care after traditional rehabilitation for individuals living with a spinal cord injury and other neurological disorders.
Angiogenesis is the main process responsible for tumor growth and metastatization. The principal effector of such mechanism is the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) secreted by cancer cells and other components of tumor microenvironment. Radiolabeled VEGF analogues may provide a useful tool to noninvasively image tumor lesions and evaluate the efficacy of anti-angiogenic drugs that block the VEGFR pathway.

Dr Tsokos praised HGS and GSK's clinical trial program for belimumab, noting that huge trials and unique trial endpoints were needed to demonstrate the drug's efficacy, allowing it to succeed where so many other lupus drugs have failed. Still, belimumab's trial design may not become standard in future lupus trials - questions about identification of appropriate lupus patients with active disease, trial endpoints, and subgrouping lupus patients remain.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Superagonist analogs of human thyroid-stimulating hormone (hTSH) may stimulate the uptake of (131)I-iodide and (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose ((18)F-FDG) in thyroid carcinomas to a greater degree than hTSH. We herein report the potency and efficacy of two hTSH analogs, TR1401 and TR1402, to stimulate radioiodide and (18)F-FDG uptake in FRTL-5 cells and compared the effects of hTSH and TR1401 on radioiodide uptake in the thyroid in vivo in mice.
Methods: The effects of hTSH analogs on intracellular levels of cAMP, uptake of (131)I-iodide, and (18)F-FDG were studied in FRTL-5 cells to determine the stimulatory potency and efficacy of the compounds by calculating half-maximum effective concentration (EC(50)) values and maximal stimulatory effects (E(max)).
New data presented at the 2010 meeting of the American Society of Hematology (ASH), at the 33rd San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS), and released by Amgen are beginning to define the anti-tumor effects of Amgen's denosumab (Xgeva™) and Novartis's zoledronate (Zometa®) in multiple myeloma, breast cancer, and prostate cancer. Just prior to the ASH meeting, Amgen received approval of denosumab for oncology indications. The antibody against RANK ligand, already approved as Prolia® for osteoporosis, will need to demonstrate advantages over its primary competitor zoledronate, a bisphosphonate.

Patients with mutations in the thyroid hormone receptor beta (TRbeta) gene manifest resistance to thyroid hormone (RTH), resulting in a constellation of variable phenotypic abnormalities. To understand the molecular basis underlying the action of mutant TRbeta in vivo, we generated mice with a targeted mutation in the TRbeta gene (TRbetaPV; PV, mutant thyroid hormone receptor kindred PV) by using homologous recombination and the Cre/loxP system. Mice expressing a single PV allele showed the typical abnormalities of thyroid function found in heterozygous humans with RTH.
