Screening health risk assessment of micropullutants for indirect potable reuse schemes: a three-tiered approach.

Indirect potable reuse schemes are an important consideration in the sustainable management of scarce water resources. However, communities still hold real concerns about the potential health risks of micropullutants in recycled water entering their potable water supply. Microfiltration or ultrafiltration followed by reverse osmosis is currently the standard treatment technology for potable use of recycled water.

Effect of motivational interviewing on rates of early childhood caries: a randomized trial.

Purpose: The purposes of this randomized controlled trial were to: (1) test motivational interviewing (MI) to prevent early childhood caries; and (2) use Poisson regression for data analysis.

Methods: A total of 240 South Asian children 6 to 18 months old were enrolled and randomly assigned to either the MI or control condition. Children had a dental exam, and their mothers completed pretested instruments at baseline and 1 and 2 years postintervention.

We evaluate our preliminary experience using the Cyberknife Radiosurgery System in treating benign spinal tumors. A retrospective review of 16 consecutively treated patients, comprising 19 benign spinal tumors, was performed. Histologic types included neurofibroma [11], chordoma [4], hemangioma [2], and meningioma [2].

The activity of QN50, a sequiterpene alcohol derived from Australian sandalwood (Santalum spicatum), was tested for its effectiveness against larvae of 2 mosquito species (Culex molestus and Aedes camptorhynchus [Diptera: Culicidael), nymphs of 2 species of water boatmen (Micronecta robusta and Agraptocorixa [Hemiptera: Corixidae]), immature Daphnia sp. (Crustacea), and mosquito eggs (Cx. molestus).

Using memory restructuring strategy to enhance dental behaviour.

Aims: This study sought to 'restructure' memory of dental treatment to help children develop positive memories and cooperate more fully with the dentist at future visits.

Design: The design compared 'usual care' plus an intervention designed to positively restructure memory with 'usual care' plus a control for 45 children, ages 6-9 years, who were in need of two restorative treatment visits. The intervention occurred at the second visit immediately before the dental treatment and focused on restructuring the child's memory of the first treatment visit.

The city of Perth in Western Australia is facing a future of compromised water supplies. In recent years, this urban region has been experiencing rapid population growth, coupled with drying climate, which has exacerbated water shortages. Mammalian homeobox gene Emx family is involved in the development of the rostral brain. Loss-of-function studies suggest that, despite the agenesis of corpus callosum, the Emx1 mutants display relatively modest defects compared to the Emx2 mutants. However, the role of the Emx1 in neurogenesis and brain function has never been explored.

Cancer incidence and mortality in a New Zealand community potentially exposed to 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin from 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid manufacture.

Objective: To investigate whether the rates of all cancers and four cancers (soft tissue sarcoma, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia) associated with dioxin exposure are higher in New Plymouth, the site of a former 2,4,5-T manufacturing plant, than for the rest of New Zealand.

Methods: Analysis of 1970-2001 cancer data from the New Zealand Cancer Registry was undertaken for New Plymouth and the rest of New Zealand.

Results: There is no evidence of an increased cancer risk apart from one period (1970-74), which falls partly outside the 1962-1987 manufacturing period if 10-year latency is assumed.

Interference in microsphere flow cytometric multiplexed immunoassays for human cytokine estimation.

The present study describes positive and negative interference of human cytokine measurement in multiplexed bead-based immunoassays. Significant differences in measured IL-6 and TNF-alpha values in 30 normal human plasma samples were apparent depending on whether measurements were with a 2-plex assay or embedded in a multiplex of 8-or more cytokine antibody pairs, as well as among the kits of 3-different vendors. Sample diluents containing proprietary blocking ingredients were shown to greatly affect the outcome of measured cytokine values.

Environmental enrichment enhances neurogenesis and improves functional outcome after cranial irradiation.

Radiation therapy is a widely used treatment for brain tumors but it can cause delayed progressive cognitive decline and memory deficits. Previous studies suggested that this neurocognitive dysfunction might be linked to the impairment of hippocampal neurogenesis. However, little is known regarding how to reduce the cognitive impairment caused by radiation therapy.

Morphological differentiation and function of the coelomocytes in the parasitic stages of Nippostrongylus brasiliensis.

Female and male worms of Nippostrongylus brasiliensis exhibited sexual dimorphism based on the number of coelomocytes present. A surprising multiplicity of diverse morphological types of coelomocytes developed in both female and male worms during the parasitic cycle. Cytoplasmic processes began to appear on the surface membrane of coelomocytes in the late third-stage larvae (L3s) in the lungs, and they increased greatly in type, size, and morphology during the fourth and fifth stages.

Background And Purpose: Evidence suggests that activated microglia are detrimental to the survival of new hippocampal neurons, whereas blocking inflammation has been shown to restore hippocampal neurogenesis after cranial irradiation and seizure. The aim of this current study is to determine the effect of minocycline on neurogenesis and functional recovery after cerebral focal ischemia.

Methods: Four days after temporary middle cerebral artery occlusion, minocycline was administered intraperitoneally for 4 weeks.

Behavioral problems in the utilization of new technology to control caries: patients and provider readiness and motivation.

New research developments frequently are neither adopted by providers nor utilized by patients. This dual problem of impacting the behaviors of providers and patients presents a challenge. This paper will present behavioral theories and technologies that can be utilized to impact both provider and patient behaviors.

Pilot clinical trial of gabapentin to decrease postoperative delirium in older patients.

In this randomized pilot clinical trial, the authors tested the hypothesis that using gabapentin as an add-on agent in the treatment of postoperative pain reduces the occurrence of postoperative delirium. Postoperative delirium occurred in 5/12 patients (42%) who received placebo vs 0/9 patients who received gabapentin, p = 0.045.

A qualitative look at parents' experience of their child's dental general anaesthesia.

Objectives: Caries relapse after treatment of early childhood caries (ECC) under general anaesthesia (GA) has been frequently reported. This research used a qualitative method of inquiry to explore parents' experience of their child's treatment under GA, and their perception of the impact of this treatment on their child.

Methods: The participants were parents whose children had recently undergone dental rehabilitation under GA.

Effect of protective filters on fire fighter respiratory health during simulated bushfire smoke exposure.

Background: Bushfire fighters are potentially subject to risks from bushfire smoke. Although many different protective masks and filters are available, it is not clear which is the most effective from a health and safety perspective. The effect of protective filters on the respiratory health of Western Australian urban career fire fighters under controlled simulated conditions is investigated.

Comparison of Campylobacter jejuni PFGE and Penner subtypes in human infections and in water samples from the Taieri River catchment of New Zealand.

Aims: To determine the degree of overlap in strain types of Campylobacter jejuni isolated from clinical cases and water samples from the Taieri catchment in the South Island of New Zealand.

Methods And Results: Thermophilic Campylobacter were collected from human cases of infection, the main stem of the Taieri River and streams within distinct land-use types over a 1-year period. Campylobacter jejuni (187 isolates) and Campylobacter lari (four isolates) were identified using a multiplex polymerase chain reaction protocol.

The escalating obesity epidemic has prompted healthcare professionals to seek interventions that can reach large numbers of individuals in a timely and cost-effective manner. The Internet, with its growing audience, seems an obvious solution. Commercial weight loss programs already abound on the Internet.

Motivating mothers to prevent caries: confirming the beneficial effect of counseling.

Background: The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of a motivational interviewing (MI) counseling visit with traditional health education for mothers of young children at high risk of developing dental caries.

Methods: The authors enrolled 240 infants aged 6 to 18 months and their mothers in the study and randomly assigned them to MI or traditional health education (control) groups. Mothers in the control group received a pamphlet and watched a videotape.

Accuracy over space and time of computer-assisted fluoroscopic navigation in the lumbar spine in vivo.

Objective: The integration of digital image-guided surgical navigation with C-arm fluoroscopy, known as virtual fluoroscopy (VF), has been shown to enhance the safety of spine surgery in vitro. Few clinical studies have assessed the accuracy of VF during actual spinal surgery, and no studies have investigated variations in accuracy over the course of a series of measurements obtained during operative cases. We sought to study the intraoperative accuracy of VF over time and space during lumbar pedicle screw placement in human patients.

Provider versus patient-centered approaches to health promotion with parents of young children: what works/does not work and why.

The purpose of this paper was to provide insight into why the health promotion approach now in general use does not work and to describe the rationale and specific steps that can be taken to enhance the effectiveness of preventive communications.

The "presyrinx" state: is there a reversible myelopathic condition that may precede syringomyelia?

Object: Alteration of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow has been proposed as an important mechanism leading to the development of syringomyelia. We hypothesize that a "presyrinx" condition due to potentially reversible alteration in normal CSF flow exists and that its appearance may be due to variations in the competence of the central canal of the spinal cord.

Methods: Five patients with clinical evidence of myelopathy, no history of spinal cord trauma, enlargement of the cervical spinal cord with T1 and T2 prolongation but no cavitation, evidence for altered or obstructed CSF flow, and no evidence of intramedullary tumor or a spinal vascular event underwent MR imaging before and after intervention that alleviated obstruction to CSF flow.

Brief functional analysis and treatment of tantrums associated with transitions in preschool children.

A brief functional analysis was used to examine the influence of termination of prechange activities and initiation of postchange activitieson tantrums exhibited by 2 preschool children. For 1 participant, tantrums were maintained by access to certain (pretransition) activities. For a 2nd participant, tantrums were maintained by avoidance of certain task initiations.
