Shigella dysenteriae type 1 (Sd1) represents a particular threat in developing countries because of the severity of the infection and its epidemic potential. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing and molecular subtyping by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and plasmid profiling (PP) of Sd1 isolates collected during two dysentery outbreaks (2013 and 445 cases of bloody diarrhoea) in Central African Republic (CAR) during the period 2003-2004 were reported. Eleven Sd1 comparison strains (CS) acquired by travellers or residents of Africa (n=10) or Asia (n=1) between 1993 and 2003 were also analysed.

Objective: A series of MAC was analyzed and compared to previously published cases.
Methods: Seven cases of MAC were identified in the register of the institution.
The aim of this study was to determine the distribution of the antimicrobial resistance phenotypes (R types), the phage types and XbaI-pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) types, the genes coding for resistance to beta-lactams and to quinolones, and the class 1 integrons among a representative sample of Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium isolates collected from humans in 2002 through the French National Reference Center for Salmonella (NRC-Salm) network. The trends in the evolution of antimicrobial resistance of serotype Typhimurium were reviewed by using NRC-Salm data from 1993, 1997, 2000, and 2003. In 2002, 3,998 isolates of serotype Typhimurium were registered at the NRC-Salm among 11,775 serotyped S.

Background: Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is the main environmental carcinogen. It is able to induce injury in the keratinocytes, which triggers mechanisms in order to protect the skin against molecular alterations that may lead to the development of skin cancer. UVB is capable of producing genotoxic damage, directly or indirectly through reactive oxygen species, inducing DNA alterations and mutations.

In the present study an animal model of the immune response against two typical antigens was designed in BALB/c mice. Dextran was chosen as a T independent antigen (TIAg), and bovine seroalbumin (BSA) as a T dependant antigen (TDAg), and the response was studied, analyzing the isotypes of the specific antibodies produced.

BaTiO3 nanoparticles of about 50 nm are coated with a shell of a few nanometers of amorphous alumina and can be recovered as a dry powder for processing. The sintering of these core-shell nanoparticles gives access to a ceramic material with very interesting ferroelectric properties, in particular, dielectric losses below 1%.

The diversity and evolution of the class A OXY beta-lactamase from Klebsiella oxytoca were investigated and compared to housekeeping gene diversity. The entire bla(OXY) coding region was sequenced in 18 clinical isolates representative of the four K. oxytoca beta-lactamase gene groups bla(OXY-1) to bla(OXY-4) and of two new groups identified here, bla(OXY-5) (with four isolates with pI 7.

The 47 multidrug-resistant (MDR) isolates identified (18%), were characterized on the basis of the presence of several resistance genes (bla(TEM), bla(PSE-1), bla(CTX-M), floR, aadA2, qacEdelta1, and sul1), the presence of Salmonella genomic island 1 (SGI1) by PCR mapping and hybridization, and the clonality of these isolates by several molecular (ribotyping, IS200 profiling, and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis [PFGE]) and phage typing methods. The results of PCR and Southern blot experiments indicated that 39 (83%) of the 47 S.

Thirty-four of 35 isolates were positive only for the MAIS complex probe by Lipav1 and were further analyzed by INNO-LiPA-MYCOBACTERIA version 2 (Lipav2), hsp65 PCR restriction pattern analysis (PRA), and ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS), hsp65, and 16S rRNA sequences.

Poultry and poultry product isolates were recovered from different locations in the southwest of France.

This antibiotic resistance gene cluster is a complex class 1 integron and most often confers resistance to ampicillin (Ap), chloramphenicol (Cm)/florfenicol (Ff), streptomycin (Sm)/spectinomycin (Sp), sulfonamides (Su), and tetracycline (Tc) (ApCmFfSmSpSuTc profile). Recently, variant SGI1 antibiotic resistance gene clusters conferring different antibiotic resistance profiles have been identified in several S.
