A hydrogenotrophic methanoarchaeon, designated strain FWC-SCC4, was isolated from cold seep sediment of Four-Way Closure Ridge, offshore southwestern Taiwan. Strain FWC-SCC4utilizes H/CO or formate, but not acetate, secondary alcohols, methylamines, methanol or ethanol for growth and methane production. Yeast extract is required for growth.

Article Synopsis
  • This study focuses on finding alternative treatments for gastric cancer (GC) patients who cannot undergo surgery, particularly those with HER2 overexpression, which affects how treatment decisions are made.* -
  • Researchers analyzed sCT iodine maps from 101 GC patients to see if histogram analysis could predict HER2 status, examining various statistical parameters from these maps.* -
  • Results showed that certain histogram parameters were significantly lower in patients with HER2-positive tumors, suggesting the potential of sCT analysis in predicting HER2 status, with a notable area under the curve for the 99th percentile parameter.*

Taiwan is situated in the subtropical region and its geographical location and topographical features contribute to a rich ecological diversity and scenic landscapes. We investigated the diversity of methanogens in different environments of Taiwan using a culture-dependent method. This report presents the characterization and taxonomy of six hydrogenotrophic methanogens obtained from cold seep sediments (strain FWC-SCC1 and FWC-SCC3), marine sediments (strain CWC-02 and YWC-01), estuarine sediments (strain Afa-1), and a hot spring well (strain Wushi-C6) in Taiwan.

Two Gram-stain-negative, straight rods, non-motile, asporogenous, catalase-negative and obligately anaerobic butyrate-producing strains, HLW78 and CYL33, were isolated from faecal samples of two healthy Taiwanese adults. Phylogenetic analyses of 16S rRNA and DNA mismatch repair protein MutL () gene sequences revealed that these two novel strains belonged to the genus . On the basis of 16S rRNA and gene sequence similarities, the type strains AF52-21(98.

A novel coagulase-negative strain (H164) was isolated from soymilk in Taiwan. Comparative sequence analysis of the 16S rRNA gene revealed that the H164 strain is a member of the genus . We used multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA) and phylogenomic analyses to demonstrate that the novel strain was closely related to , , , and .

A novel mesophilic, hydrogenotrophic methanogen, strain CWC-04, was obtained from a sediment sample extracted from a gravity core retrieved at station 22 within the KP-9 area off the southwestern coast of Taiwan during the ORIII-1368 cruise in 2009. Cells of strain CWC-04 were rod-shaped, 1.4-2.

Background: According to statistics, ovarian cancer (OV) is the most prevalent type of gynecologic malignancy and has the highest mortality rate of all gynecologic tumors. Although several studies have shown that oxidative stress (OS) contributes significantly to the onset and progression of cancer, the role of OS in OV needs to be investigated further. Thus, it is critical to comprehend the function of OS-related genes in OV.

Background: Evidence regarding the characteristics and prognosis of neuroblastoma (NBL) in China is limited. We aimed to investigate the characteristics and prognosis of intermediate- or high-risk NBL in children in China.

Methods: We included 147 patients with intermediate- or high-risk NBL evaluated from January 2006 to March 2015.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated the effectiveness of a mini patient-derived xenograft (MiniPDX) model in finding tailored chemotherapy treatments for children with hepatoblastoma who showed inadequate response to standard treatments.
  • A total of 31 pediatric patients’ tumors were used to test different chemotherapy regimens, with the goal of selecting those that resulted in the lowest tumor growth rates.
  • Results showed the MiniPDX-guided chemotherapy led to an 80.64% complete remission rate and significantly better survival outcomes, especially in advanced stage cases, compared to traditional chemotherapy methods.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers studied survival chances for Chinese kids with a type of liver cancer called hepatoblastoma and looked at a new treatment from 2016.
  • They found that most kids (93.5%) survived well after four years, and younger kids or those without advanced cancer had the best chances.
  • The results showed that if kids had a big drop in a specific blood marker, they tended to do even better after treatment.

Background: Soft-tissue sarcomas during infancy are rare and understudied. With no data on this specific condition, we performed a retrospective study of infant-onset sarcomas based on a multi-institutional cohort in Beijing, China, collected over the past decade. We reviewed infantile soft-tissue sarcomas' clinical characteristics, treatments, and outcomes.

Background: We retrospectively investigated the role of neoadjuvant chemotherapy in low-risk patients with hepatoblastoma (HB) who underwent curative resection between February 2009 and December 2017. We also verified the feasibility of the risk stratification system to select the optimal patients for upfront surgery.

Procedure: We compared 5-year overall survival (OS) and event-free survival (EFS) between the upfront surgery (n = 26) and neoadjuvant chemotherapy (n = 104) groups at three oncology centers in Beijing, China.

Background: In this study, we aimed to analyze the clinical characteristics and prognosis of children with retinoblastoma (RB) in a single center in China with a large sample collection spanning 17 years.

Methods: The clinical data of 2790 children with RB treated in Beijing Tongren Hospital from 2005 to 2021 were collected, and a retrospective analysis was conducted.

Results: The median age of the participants was 28.

Ovarian serous cystadenocarcinoma (OV) is a fatal gynecologic cancer with a five-year survival rate of only 46%. Resistance to platinum-based chemotherapy is a prevalent factor in OV patients, leading to increased mortality. The platinum resistance in OV is driven by transcriptome heterogeneity and tumor heterogeneity.

Introduction: Family functioning has been found to significantly impact each family member's health mentally, physically, and socially. A number of the research has focused on the impact of impaired family functioning in general, but limited studies explore family functioning in the vulnerable period, early pregnancy. Therefore, the study aimed to investigate the characteristics and related factors in Chinese females and partners during early pregnancy.

Background: The pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 lastingly affects public mental health. Many studies have described symptoms of anxiety and depression in pregnant women before the pandemic. However, the limited study focuses on the prevalence and risk factors of mood symptoms among first-trimester females and their partners during the pandemic in China, which was the aim of the study.

Hepatoblastoma (HB) in children with both lung and right atrial metastases is an unusual situation. The therapy for these cases is challenging and the prognosis is not good. We present three children with HB showing both lung and right atrial metastases and who underwent surgery and received preoperative/postoperative adjuvant-combined chemotherapy to achieve complete remission.

This study aimed to investigate the short-term efficacy and adverse reactions of irinotecan combined with first-line chemotherapeutics for the treatment of pediatric hepatoblastoma with pulmonary metastasis (HB-PM). Forty-one pediatric patients with HB-PM undergoing cisplatin + fluorouracil + vincristine + doxorubicin (C5VD) treatment with bad therapeutic effect or bad response were instead treated with two cycles of an irinotecan protocol (vincristine + irinotecan + cyclophosphamide + cisplatin). The changes in recent alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), efficacy and adverse reactions in these patients were statistically analyzed.

A coaxial dual-camera digital image correlation system using a hypercentric lens was proposed to determine the defect position in the inner wall of a pipeline under loads. Compared with the traditional dual-camera system, this system ensures that both cameras can capture a 360-degree panoramic image in the same position. Herein, the imaging principle of the system was introduced in detail.
