Organic polymer-based composite materials with favorable mechanical performance and functionalities are keystones to various modern industries; however, the environmental pollution stemming from their processing poses a great challenge. In this study, by finding an autonomous phase separating ability of fungal mycelium, a new material fabrication approach is introduced that leverages such biological metabolism-driven, mycelial growth-induced phase separation to bypass high-energy cost and labor-intensive synthetic methods. The resulting self-regenerative composites, featuring an entangled network structure of mycelium and assembled organic polymers, exhibit remarkable self-healing properties, being capable of reversing complete separation and restoring ≈90% of the original strength.

The availability of freshwater is rapidly declining due to over-exploitation and climate change, with multiple parts of the globe already facing significant freshwater scarcity. Here, a sulfonated hypercrosslinked polymer able to repeatedly harvest significant amounts of water via direct air capture is reported. Water uptake from relative humidities as low as 10% is demonstrated, mimicking some of the harshest environments on Earth.

Due to its unique properties, nano fibrillated cellulose (NFC) has been a popular topic of research in recent years. Nevertheless, literature assessing environmental impacts of NFC production is scarce, especially for using other starting materials than wood pulp. The bowl-shaped, 3-fold interlinked porphyrin dimer was obtained in respectable yields during macrocyclization attempts. Its bicyclic structure, consisting of a macrocycle made of a pair of acetylene interlinked tetraphenylporphyrins which are additionally linked by a C-C bond interlinking two pyrrole subunits, has been confirmed spectroscopically (2D-NMR, UV/vis, HR-MALDI-ToF MS). Late-stage functionalization provided the structural analogue with acetyl-protected terminal thiol anchor groups enabling single molecule transport investigations in a mechanically controlled break junction experiment.

Mycelium, the vegetative growth of filamentous fungi, has attracted increasing commercial and academic interest in recent years because of its ability to upcycle agricultural and industrial wastes into low-cost, sustainable composite materials. However, mycelium composites typically exhibit foam-like mechanical properties, primarily originating from their weak organic filler constituents. Fungal growth can be alternatively utilized as a low-cost method for on-demand generation of natural nanofibrils, such as chitin and chitosan, which can be grown and isolated from liquid wastes and byproducts in the form of fungal microfilaments.

An appealing feature of molecular electronics is the possibility of inducing changes in the orbital structure through external stimuli. This can provide functionality on the single-molecule level that can be employed for sensing or switching purposes if the associated conductance changes are sizable upon application of the stimuli. Here, we show that the room-temperature conductance of a spring-like molecule can be mechanically controlled up to an order of magnitude by compressing or elongating it.

Background: The accuracy of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) in non-critically ill hospitalized patients with heart failure or severe hyperglycemia (SH) is unknown.

Methods: Hospitalized patients with congestive heart failure (CHF) exacerbation (receiving IV or subcutaneous insulin) or SH requiring insulin infusion were compared to outpatients referred for retrospective CGM.

Results: Forty-three patients with CHF, 15 patients with SH, and 88 outpatients yielded 470, 164, and 2150 meter-sensor pairs, respectively.

Early life exposure to ambient polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can result in developmental delay. The negative health effects of PAHs have been well-documented but the cost of developmental delay due to PAH exposure has not been studied. Near-forward scattering of an optically trapped 5-mum-radius polystyrene latex sphere by the trapping beam was examined both theoretically and experimentally. Since the trapping beam is tightly focused, the beam fields superpose and interfere with the scattered fields in the forward hemisphere. IL10 is an anti-inflammatory cytokine that has been found to have lower production in macrophages and mononuclear cells from asthmatics. Since reduced IL10 levels may influence the severity of asthma phenotypes, we examined IL10 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for association with asthma severity and allergy phenotypes as quantitative traits. Utilizing DNA samples from 518 Caucasian asthmatic children from the Childhood Asthma Management Program (CAMP) and their parents, we genotyped six IL10 SNPs: 3 in the promoter, 2 in introns, and one in the 3' UTR.

The amyloid peptide (Abeta), derived from the proteolytic cleavage of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) by beta- and gamma-secretases, undergoes multistage assemblies to fibrillar depositions in the Alzheimer's brains. Abeta protofibrils were previously identified as an intermediate preceding insoluble fibrils. While characterizing a synthetic Abeta variant named EV40 that has mutations in the first two amino acids (D1E/A2V), we discerned unusual aggregation profiles of this variant.

Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) is the principal receptor for bacterial endotoxin recognition, and functional variants in the gene confer endotoxin-hyporesponsiveness in humans. Furthermore, there is evidence that endotoxin exposure during early life is protective against the development of atopy and asthma, although this relationship remains poorly understood. It is therefore possible that genetic variation in the TLR4 locus contributes to asthma susceptibility.

The Cdc7 protein kinase of Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a critical regulator of several aspects of DNA metabolism and cell cycle progression. We describe the isolation of a human gene encoding a Cdc7 homolog. The Cdc7Hs protein sequence is 27% identical to that of the yeast protein, includes features unique to yeast Cdc7, and contains all conserved catalytic residues of protein kinases.
