Understanding inbreeding depressions (IBDs), the effect on the phenotypic performance of inbreeding, is of major importance for evolution and conservation genetics. Inbreeding depressions in aquatic animals were well documented in a domestic or captive population, while there is less evidence of inbreeding depression in natural populations. Chinese shrimp, , is an important species in both aquaculture and fishery activities in China.

Background: Gastric cancer (GC) is a primary cause of cancer death around the world. Previous studies have found that Drosha plays a significant role in the development of tumor cells. Soon after, we unexpectedly found that the expression of microRNA6778-5p (miR6778-5p) is unconventionally high in the gastric cancer cells low-expressing Drosha.

Microlens arrays can improve light transmittance in optical devices or enhance the photoelectrical conversion efficiency of photovoltaic devices. Their surface morphology (aspect ratio and packed density) is vital to photon management in solar cells. Here, we report a 100% packed density paraboloidal microlens array (PMLA), with a large aspect ratio, fabricated by direct-write UV laser photolithography coupled with soft imprint lithography.

Emulsifier-free poly(methyl methacrylate-styrene) [P(MMA-St)] nanospheres with an average particle size of 100 nm were synthesized in an isopropyl alcohol-water medium by a solvothermal method. Then, through radical graft copolymerization of thermo-sensitive monomer -isopropylacrylamide (NIPAm) and hydrophilic monomer acrylic acid (AA) onto the surface of P(MMA-St) nanospheres at 80 °C, a series of thermo-sensitive polymer nanospheres, named SD-SEAL with different lower critical solution temperatures (LCST), were prepared by adjusting the mole ratio of NIPAm to AA. The products were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, particle size distribution, and specific surface area analysis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on understanding sexual reproduction and sex ratio in turbot, a commercially important flatfish, due to limited genetic information available.
  • Researchers performed transcriptome profiling of gonad tissues, yielding over 453,000 high-quality reads and identifying significant sexual dimorphism in gene expression between male and female turbot.
  • A total of 6,484 and 6,036 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were found in male and female libraries, respectively, providing essential data for future genetic studies and breeding programs in the turbot industry.

This paper describes the development of a high density consensus genetic linkage map of a turbot (Scophthalmus maximus L.) family composed of 149 mapping individuals using Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNP) developed using the restriction-site associated DNA (RAD) sequencing technique with the restriction enzyme, PstI. A total of 6,647 SNPs were assigned to 22 linkage groups, which is equal to the number of chromosome pairs in turbot.

In the present study, a DNA sequence encoding a small heat shock protein gene (FcHsp21) in the Chinese shrimp, Fenneropenaeus chinensis, was cloned, and its expression was analyzed after white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) infection. The FcHsp21 gene contained an open reading frame (ORF) of 555 bp in length, encoding a 184 amino acid protein with a theoretical size of about 21 kDa and a predicted isoelectric point of 5.38.

A C-type lectin-like protein was cloned and characterized from the Chinese shrimp Fenneropenaeus chinensis, and named as FcCTL. The results indicated that the full length cDNA of 859 bp had an open reading frame encoded a polypeptide of 220 amino acids with one carbohydrate-recognition domain, six conserved Cys and one key motif EPGD. The theoretical molecular weight and pI of mature protein was 25.

The β-1,3-D: -glucan binding protein (βGBP), one kind of the pattern recognition proteins (PRPs), was cloned and characterized from the Chinese Shrimp Fenneropenaeus chinensis, and named as FcβGBP-HDL. The results indicated that the full length cDNA of 6713 bp had an open reading frame encoded a polypeptide of 2139 amino acids with two glucanase-like motifs and one RGD motif, while without signal peptide. The calculated molecular mass of mature protein was 240.

An assay was developed for the detection of infectious hypodermal and hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHHNV) based on real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR). A pair of primers and a TaqMan probe were designed that are specific for the recognition of a conservative region in the IHHNV genome. The IHHNV real-time PCR assay had a detection limit of 9 DNA copies, with a dynamic range of detection between 9 x 106 and 9 DNA copies.
